Clarity from deep fog in prometheus marketing

My feeling about the marketing mistakes of this films potential was right away from the onset of its announcement . The first time i heard about this was almost three years ago when it was announced that ridley was making an alien prequel that started as rumour, and hearsay,.. Then it was confirmed he was making an alien prequel and that sparked an interest in me not felt for many years . Then i began searching day in, day out, for later developments it then became apparent that ridley wanted to make a movie that had a stand alone quality to it that could be referenced to alien, but introduce us to a whole new aspect to this universe. Then it was reported that the film was not an alien prequel but a sc fi epic that had the dna of the original alien universe but really had nothing to do with alien. I remember reading this and thinking jesus what's going on here i wish they would make their mind up. Then came the news of the tie in with the space jockeys, and how they came to be and the whole Gods, and engineers, element this got me really up for this film but still i was confused at the marketing and talk of what this was going to be. You see if this film and its makers had been up front from the onset and were a little clearer in their intent of what they were going to do but still managed to keep the details under wraps, i feel sc fi fans, and expectations, would not have been so disjointed, and we would of known how to prepare and prime, ourselves for what we could expect from this film. As it stands they have sent out so many mixed messages out there, and they have Convoluted our expectations to a point that its annoying, and frustrating, especially with regards to the rating, and epic length, etc. The story itself not so much because no one wants to give the whole details away of a great film, but i think they could of handled the clarity, and marketing, for this film better from the get go. Having said that there are lots to say they did get right the cast, and crew, and the viral marketing has been great, and it has worked brilliantly in the interest this film has achieved in generating . I just feel there are aspects of the film's marketing that have been confusing and frustrating, especially when you have drawn in the alien, franchise fans to this and their preconceived notions of the universe they are passionate about. Is their anyone else who feels this could of been handled much better and how they could of explained their intentions with much better clarity. thanks altered.

I have a Mktg degree studied Mktg in Cegep and University and practice it myself in my day to day life. What is most amazing to me about all of this is that This Film could have been made without anyone saying anything at all to anybody, with the entire matter being a secret. Then one day Ridley could have announced it was done and being opened in theaters world wide within 24 hours {having prepared it all in advance} and IMO every living Human Being On This Planet would have tried to see it anyways without any Mktg. what so ever save his simple announcement...and even if it had been rated 18 years+ not R...X...18 Years +...every living human being would have tried to get in. The Fox Target Market, every one of them, all 3 Zillion 12 to 19 Year Old Young Men, would have put Hockey Pucks In their Cowboy Boots to Look Bigger at the ticket stand like I did when I was 13 and Jaws came out and was rated 14+ Only, in Montreal. The MKTG. for this film is wonderful...I have loved every single minute of it, but make no mistake...every single g*d d****d Bit of it was and continues to be, completely unnecessary...Reminds me of a very simple and now, suprisingly, a very famous Film Quote..."If You Build It They Will Come"

I produce and co-own a little GREEN kid's show on PBS so maybe I can add something to this marketing discussion. Last year our prod. co. was invited to a major advertising firm in Dallas, TX. Little did we know but they were in the process of (sort-of) grooming us to see if maybe we'd be the next "Barney" and worth their while. During this trip, we witnessed how they were majorly into marketing a number of other TV shows and films. Their biggest client was "Cowboys & Aliens" and they were pulling out all the stops for it. Here's what impressed me... they had a 3 floor very hipster-looking open and creative space (think Apple, only everything wasn't white). But 2 of their largest departments were: 1. creating viral marketing, and 2. monitoring and responding to social media. It literally blew my mind. They had massive amounts of 20-somethings working those rooms... and try as they might, we all know how "Cowboys & Aliens" panned out. (Probably used the wrong ALIENS!) I heard something great from the CEO though, he said: "We've busted our ass on marketing this film. It's been 10 years in the making. It opens on Fri. and by Sun., we'll all know whether or not we still have a job. It all boils down to those 3 days."

I think the marketing has been exceptional! Ive never seen a film marketed this way before. TED talks, David Viral videos providing backstory prior to entering the movie. IMO has created alot of curiosity and anticipation towards this movie! As for the rating issue and time length of the film im sure Ridley Scott and his team are stressing over these issues, trying to get the best out of the film without displeasing its producers My only real complaint would be that the international trailer might have shown too much. However as an Alien fan i might be nitpicking just a bit.

@ Sparty: Love the pic! Nice to hear you were in marketing... can you imagine those guys sweating bullets opening weekend? @altered: I think this was a great thread. You had some very valid points. I just don't think with all the hands in the advertising pot stirring the buzz for this film, that any of us will ever be completely satisfied with the way it was persented. RS included.

Hey, one more thing... Don't think for a nano-second that FOX and the Scott Bros aren't monitoring what's going on here. I guarantee they are. And I guarantee this site matters more to them than most our members will ever know.

@alteredstate. ?.. I fundamentally disagreed with your conclusion - but that does not mean your topic was, "lame"? Far from it. I urge you to perhaps read it again: you may then see how it is one of the most well-considered, reasonably supported and clearly expressed threads created on here.

Is the emergence of sentient hominids on planet Earth such a mystery that explanations such as the SJ sperm canon are necessary? No.

I think the marketing has been done perfectly. I think they aim to confuse and frustrate us. It will all turn out great if the film is good.
