Well it looks like he's looking at the green Orb while he was playing with it ... could be some sort of tuning instrument? ... could be completely basic too ...

The way Fassbender is playing the character makes me think of a combination of Data and HAL9000. I think of the recorder playing to be similar to Data's paintings. A combination of his programming and his own self motivation is driving him to express himself through art. I just want to hear him say "What are you doing Dave?" while in that character. From what I see so far this is the best portrayal of an artificial being since Brent Spiner. (Jude Law sucked in AI btw and I don't care how long that kid could go without blinking, he sucked too.)

ash, you are so right. I think he's gonna win an oscar for this role. Seriously. Obviously, it depends on how much of the main line story is really his, but he's the type of actor that will steal the screen, no matter what.
