MemberOvomorphApr-27-2012 6:51 PMMaybe a discussion on Alien and Gaming would be interesting.
The movie 'Aliens' had a huge influence on gaming. From Doom and Duke Nukem in the early days to all of the Halo's today there are too many references to mention them all. You can see the influence of Aliens in virtually every sci fi first person shooter today.
There are the direct Alien games like the AVP series and they are all good games.
Lately I've been more interested in games that have the look and feel of the original Alien movie....That's the movie thats closest to my heart and the reason im so excited about Proetheus.
For me the games 'Dead Space' and 'Dead Space 2' come closest to the feel of the original Alien....There are other games like Half life that clearly took from Alien but they dont have that survival horror feel like Alien. Possibly 'system shock 2' would be another one.
Anyway..curious to hear other peoples ideas on Alien(s) and gaming....thoughts, suggestions, it's all good.

MemberOvomorphApr-28-2012 1:49 AMLets not forget Metroid. That game in of itself is hugely based on the Alien genre. Plus the creators of Metroid said they paid some homage to it.
I mean think of it this way. The CHOZO which is an advanced alien race with technology that bested humans easily. ALSO created the Metroid race. In which the space pirates wanted to steal from the CHOZO to make it into a weapon to "clean" planets.
CHOZO = Space Jockey
Space Pirates = Weyland/Yutani (they want the weapon)
Samus = A human raised by Chozo and given Chozo technology to battle space pirates and eradicate the Metroid species.
Now upon seeing the Chozo the first time playing Metroid they are statues or fossilized, very reminiscent of Lambert, Dallas and Kane seeing the space jockey.
It is my opinion that Metroid and Alien share very strong ties. Probably stronger than any game not officially related to Alien.

MemberOvomorphApr-28-2012 2:26 AMGames don't get better than Super Metroid and Metroid Prime.
One of the main adversaries in the series is named Ridley. nuff said.
Imagine if they really embraced the Alien influence and went full Giger with the art direction. Not the monochromatic look, but the level of biomechanical detail, surface texture, and alien imagery.
There is a monster in Resident Evil 4 that is based on the Alien. About as creepy and intimidating too.

MemberOvomorphApr-29-2012 11:17 PMI remember the playing Call of Duty 4 hearing "stay frosty," and "I like to keep this for close encounters," being said. Halo CE one of my favorite games nicked so much from Aliens e.g.
- Marines uniform
- design of the pelican dropship
- Black, Badass, cigar smoking, sergeant.
Lets be honest Johnson from halo is a carbon copy of Apone (aliens)
To say Alien has been influential is an understatement.

MemberOvomorphMay-01-2012 9:19 AMI remember a sound effects pack that you could download for Doom. It changed the doors opening effects to that of Aliens, changed the weapon noises etc. It was great.
