It's impossible to recreate the amazing atmosphere of the original... but so far it seems like a faithful follow-up.
If there's more surprising and mysterious plot than trailers show (and they show a lot), the atmosphere will be undoubtedly better.

ALIEN had a palpable stark tone to it, almost ominous
in every single frame, the pacing and score all worked
in pretty much perfect unison to become the iconic and
classic sci-fi horror film we all know and love
if Scott, can channel that same formula with PROMETHEUS,
he will have done what very few directors have ever done,
create a fresh and new take on something that is almost
impossible to thoroughly replicate
i hope the score for this film is minimal, and that Scott
doesn't rely on jolts of music when there is a sudden movement
or moment in the film, that has been done to death
the visuals are all here, and they are arresting, if the tone
and pacing of this film match that, then we are all in for a
truly thrilling and equally satisfying ride....

absolutely, Mark. The lighting, the music, the dark. The contrasting "white sterility" of the Prometheus with the "dark rawness" of the Pyramid/LV-2xx is just amazing on film.
Once again, this film should be a cinch to win for art direction, cinematography, special effects, and that's without even seeing the acting or the story...

Alien really was a surprise attack with everything going for it terms of that. This time around is way different....massive expectations and how to deal with that legacy. One way is what I've seen, in my opinion, is exactly what they are doing....release a bunch of trailers images and write a background that sits out in the public domain....misdirecting away from a massive top secret major story element. People are going for the dove up the sleeve...its working.
