The microscopic larvae are ingested by their insect hosts and develop inside them into worms that can be three to four times longer than the host. Your text to link here... I remembered reading about this somewhere; perhaps some friendly biologist can suggest other candidates. There does seem to be commonality in themes referring to parasitical behaviour in the Prometheus bestiary. Whaddya reckon?

thanks Otto.... yes, i remember reading ( prolly on here) that the production was referencing real behaviours from the natural world. And some of the nasty stuff critters do to eat and reproduce is very gnarly. Truth is stranger than fiction.

This sort of thing is more common than you might think. You can check out two more examples here and here. The wasp one is especially cool, because the wasps have developed a symbiotic relationship with a virus that they inject into the caterpillar along with their eggs, and that virus is believed to alter the host behavior. There's even some evidence that the common human parasite toxoplasma gondii can somewhat alter the behavior of its hosts to a degree, although what purpose that serves is not yet clear. Nature is pretty fuckin scary, when you really look at it. Scary but cool.

Beware, this really is mind-boggling stuff, disgusting and pretty scary. So here's my take on fungus-controlled ants and fly larvae growing inside ant's heads only to burst out. Scale this up a bit and you're there! Life cycles and all... I remembered this from a stunning documentary about the ancient Tepui's (Table Mountains) of Venezuela and Guyana. So I found this article on National Geographic, make sure you read all of it and browse through the disturbing photo gallery. "The fungus species can infect an ant, take over its brain, and then kill the insect once it moves to a location ideal for the fungi to grow and spread their spores." "Zombie" Ants Found With New Mind-Control Fungi So far so good, but when I thought things cannot get much nastier and horrid, I found this related article: "In South America, female phorid flies have developed a bizarre reproductive strategy: They hover over fire ants, then inject their eggs into the ants with a needle-like appendage... Finally, the baby fly decapitates its host and hatches, exiting through the ant's head, as shown in the pictures in this gallery." "Zombie" Ants Controlled, Decapitated by Flies Enjoy the ride, sweet dreams for ya all! I do think that the Cobraxeno what ever, not only change the hosts DNA but they also controll their minds. I made a comment a few days back and a while before that about this Organism maybe being like the Star Trek Trill Organism but one that also mutates its host. Or maybe by the swelling of the Hosts head/Brain what we could be seeing is maybe the Organism actually gets into and attaches itself to the Hosts Brain and maybe thats why the Mutants Head Grow and maybe that explains how one bursts out of the Space Jockey Head/Helmet they find.
