see that facehose?, it looks like its connecting to some kinda air supply, like a tank. their ship iiis oxygenated, as the crew members have their helmets off. maybe they fill it and connect the hose to it when they go on the land.

that painting was done back in 78/79 and was to be used in a scene for Alien ( the temple scene) but the scene was dropped. the astronaut pictured is not meant to be a space jockey just a 'generic" astronaut, that helps depict the life-cycle of the Alien.
that second picture looks like some atrocious attempt to model a space jockey in 3d!

There's a different version of the pic which has a SJ-looking creature falling victim to the facehugger, not an astronaut

What is to the left of the bottom picture with the astronaut lying down? Looks like a pet dog alien's rear section....???

It's the dead facehugger
Ridley Scott will eventually tell us how the Queen was born.
Right now we have the Deacon; coming soon the Mercury, the May and the Taylor.

Facehuggers don't have a dog-like torso, a hind leg (although this one is curled a bit) and a dog-tail....Please look again. Bottom panel...to the left of the lying astronaut's head.

Consider that this drawing was made before the actual puppets were realized, and Giger didn't work himself on the final version of the FH, so its final look differs from what Giger had in mind.
Just compare the dead one with the one impregnating the astronaut, in the second tier: it's the same thing.
And finally, it makes totally sense to me to show in the life cycle that the facehugger is dead, the drawing is complete, and wouldn't be otherwise.
