Technologies

Any thoughts as to why the technology in Prometheus looks more advanced than in the Alien movies, (i.e. holographic computer projections, etc.) even though Prometheus is set prior to events of Alien by several decades.
This irks me a bit, like in the Star Wars prequels. However, the reasoning in Star Wars was that due to the wars and the Empire clamping down on everything, technologies were heavily regulated and used only by those in power within the Empire.

could be an economic thing too, as Weyland/Yutani expand out into space they would typically look to do things as cheap as possible so outfitting your ships will the very best tech would be a no no,you would spend the minimum amount possible to maximize profits.

The Prometheus is like a Flagship of Weyland Corp. State of the art, corporate, and pristine.
The Nostromo is an old, piece mailed, industrial, mining transport ship, like an oil rig. It could very well be older than the prometheus. Weyland Corp has been mining and terraforming long before the prometheus mission.

People are fascinated with technology. Besides RS's Alien somewhat prequel, Iam also going to see the technology aspects of this movie.
Cool lighting, fancy gadgets, motion trackers that fly, etc etc.
If they didn't use technology current with todays movie standards they could possibly dampen the movie. The old tech in Alien is brutal by todays standards. Reminds me of the first Mac pc's and the terrible sounds prnters back then use to make.
I dont think too many people will mind having advanced technology that vastly differs from Alien. I think they will embrace it.
I completely understand what your saying but I dont think it's something people will go "*&^%, this movie is ruined".

Yeh its basic stuff really, the Nostromo at the time of Alien was a old ship and the equivalent of a cargo hauler the crew were unsurprisingly miffed with it in general and it seemed that all in all it was a very unglamorous voyage . The Prometheus on the other hand was a highly funded state of the art vessel charged with possibly the most important endeavor in human history even if it you take into account the earlier time frame it would still feature the very best of everything available at the time.
As fir star wars again its fairly understandable, the emperor suppressed advancement as a mode of control the imperial fleet represented the height of available tech and as such ruled totally, the rebel fleet was made up of old ships maintained and best as possible, in revenge of the Sith you see glimpses of x-wings and y-wing fighters looking brand new.
all in all its a fair explanation

I think lack of development during movie itself shows limited technology. Just look at the computer from the first movie and compare it with current prometheus terminals.
Uncertainty is the only certainty there is, and knowing how to live with insecurity is the only security.

if you look at the radio console in a basic model car now its nothing clever at all whereas if you buy a top of the range Audi or BMW its very swanky with sat nav and TV and loads of other rubbish so again very explainable.
Phones too you can get simple models that are not much better looking than models from 10 years ago or the latest I-phone which can have a conversation with you. I asked mine what it was wareing the other day and it replied " Aluminum and glass nice eh !"

It looks advanced because we're 30 years after Alien, and directors and writers usually prefer to focus on a story rather than recreate the state of the art of earlier decades.
While for Star Wars it all becomes painful and as the years go by in the movie you see technology moving back instead of forward, in Alien we prefer to justify it by saying that the Prometheus is a top of the line scientific vessel, while the Nostromo is just a towing vehicle. White collars vs blue collars. And in the end it all makes sense.
It's not touch screens and lush monitors/holograms that give away advanced technology anyway, they are just gadgets. The real advanced technology is what we don't notice immediately: David is waaaaaaaaaay less advanced than Ash, and the Nostromo seems to be travelling way faster than the Prometheus. (But we don't have much evidence about the distances between lv-426 and lv-223).
So I think that they dodged the problem by addressing the real technological issues.
Ridley Scott will eventually tell us how the Queen was born.
Right now we have the Deacon; coming soon the Mercury, the May and the Taylor.

The planets are not that far away from each other at all ;-) can't be, I've seen the ringed planet from the original Alien (where they are trudging to the Derelict) in the background of them landing in Prometheus.
iPhones will end up rising against us! It's already started! THEY TALK BACK TO YOU!

This begars the question, should they 'touch-up' Alien as they did with Blade Runner: The Final Cut to bring it in line with that of Prometheus? And so, perhaps, a bit more to Aliens too? Lats two Alien films not so sure about... I'd rather see the money go on, shall we say, 'retro-fitting' more Alien to tie-in with Prometheus and less Aliens as it was pretty much flawless with the17 minutes thus restored to its original glory. Alien is a vast supirior film in its current state too, with its extra few-minutes running time do get me wrong, but perhaps a liitle technical face-lift just here and there would bring it in line with Prometheus as well. Nothing major, just subtle things and differences thats all.
