What Do you Think About this, I found it.. I did not expect to see a negative side to Ridley Scott's PROMETHEUS, but apparently this is it. According to Guillermo Del Toro, PROMETHEUS is the direct and likely culprit for the demise of AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS, based on the H.P. Lovecraft Cthulhu mythos novel. Speaking on the message board of his official website (how cool is that?), Del Toro had this to say. Prometheus started filming a while ago- right at the time we were in preproduction on PACIFIC RIM. The title itself gave me pause- knowing that ALIEN was heavily influenced by Lovecraft and his novella. This time, decades later with the budget and place Ridley Scott occupied, I assumed the greek metaphor alluded at the creation aspects of the HPL book. I believe I am right and if so, as a fan, I am delighted to see a new RS science fiction film, but this will probably mark a long pause -if not the demise- of ATMOM. The sad part is- I have been pursuing ATMOM for over a decade now- and, well, after HELLBOY II two projects I dearly loved were not brought to fruition for me. The good part is: One project did… And I am loving it and grateful for the blessings I have received. So then the question obviously comes up: what about PROMETHEUS prevents AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS from being filmed? Del Toro explained: Same premise. Scenes that would be almost identical. Both movies seem to share identical set pieces and the exact same BIG REVELATION (twist) at the end. I won’t spoil it. I have not read AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS in years, but from what I do remember, this is awesome news. If you have never read the Lovecraft novel you may want to hold off until after PROMETHEUS is released. To me, this is the most ringing endorsement possible for Ridley Scott's film. Hopefully we may see Del Toro return to the material in a few years, but until then we can hold out for PACIFIC RIM. Source: Del Toro Films

YA KNOW WHAT YOU MADE ME REALIZE THAT IN RETROSPECT DEL TORRO MUST FEEL JUST LIKE WE DO ABOUT LOVECRAFT'S FILM ADAPTATIONS RIGHT NOW BUT WITH REGARD TO THIS PROJECT OF HIS WHICH I CANNOT BELIEVE HE WOULD JUST DUMP AFTER A DECADE, AND SAY HE'S GOTTA BE TRYING TO GET SOME ATTENTION AND HELP TO FINISH IT BUT KEEP IT AS DIFFERENT FROM PROMETHEUS AS HE CAN. THAT'S AN AGENDA MOVE I THINK. HE USED THE PRESS TO TRY TO GET SOME HELP.

Man i have all of Lovecrafts novels and other stuff he wrote. Could it be that Sir Ridleys work is more respected and regarded as well as waited, rather than Toro's?

Oh come on.. I am certain it isn't anything like Lovecraft's book. That or you should have written spoiler in the title... It is also in extreme poor taste for Del Toro to blame Ridley for his failure to make a "Mountains of Madness" movie.

I believe there already is a Cthulu movie. And I believe it is French or German... can´t remember. But I remeber one part being a beach with people ashore inside a cage.

Watch out, this discussion has already been posted earlier today. Here
Ridley Scott will eventually tell us how the Queen was born. Right now we have the Deacon; coming soon the Mercury, the May and the Taylor.

Yes, there are many similarities but definitely not the same story. And this also happened with Alien:

I saw CHE and his work on this film is remarkable, that aside, with regard to ALIEN or especially Prometheus this man IMO has ZERO CLAIM.. and honestly he sounds like a whinny little child. I mean it sure looks like he is venting and lost in his own world because he does not have the intestinal fortitude especially if that project was so great to begin with, no one just gives up after 10 years of working on a film because someone else releases something they think may be similar...that's not even close to a big enough obstacle to make it credible or to establish grounds for "WHIMPING OUT". No, that entire statement REEKS of MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF PURE JEALOUSY AND i FOR ONE...am not buying one word of it.

Sparty, Ya, I think alot of that was in poor taste. He's not getting anywhere by saying that.. And in the future, he's not going to be involved in any of my movies..

@Spartacus You're thinking of Benicio Del Toro who played Che...this is Guillermo Del Toro - writer/director/producer of Hellboy I&II, Pan's Labyrinth, the upcoming Pacific Rim.

"I believe I am right and if so, as a fan, I am delighted to see a new RS science fiction film, but this will probably mark a long pause -if not the demise- of ATMOM." It was not in poor taste, nor was it "whinny", he was actually quite respectful. You have to understand that ATMOM has been Del Toro's passion project for almost twenty years now. When it was in the works a couple of years ago, Tom Cruise was in talks for the lead and Jame Cameron as executive producer, (he would have provided all his most up to date equipment.) Del Toro is constantly asked about ATMOM by fans. Due to similarities between it and the plot of Prometheus, he is simply telling his fans on his own official forum why he thinks it will not happen.
