DUNE lovers and haters

Still I don't understand why so many people seem to loath it. It had great actors, good fxs [they could be better, though], it had some nice non-canon stuff going on [the weirding module et al], a great sound track, wonderful sets and the Spacing Guild Navigator [with a vagina for a mouth]
Even Lynch refuses to talk about it!
Why???
thank you kindly for any feedback

Lynch can be hard for some people to stomach- no matter what the subject/material. He made an interesting movie for sure... I find i have to be in a certain mood for it. The books are amazing and no movies will ever touch them. Even the prequel books his son did were great.

I REALLY enjoy the movie. I saw it in the theater when it came out. It's NOT dead on with the book, but it is pretty danged awesome, IMHO...the latter parts of it drag a bit, and I HATE the Baron Harkonnen character, but...it's a fine movie, IMHO...one of the "classic" films of sci fi, despite what the "critics" say...

I think Lynch had to bow to the studio and cut out A LOT...I would love to see the missing parts some time!

hello Otto:
yeah... De Laurentis was the Master Censure for that one [is that the way it is spelled?]
There were two parts with the Baron that I enjoyed: When he floats and kills a dude by removing is heart plug and the doctor taking care of his desease.
IMHO the tv series were so... mheee... "the book is canon the book is canon" that made little impact [and they abused the CGI]. And the Guild navigator looked like a freeking BAT!
There are things that work well in movies, others simply don't. And I do think Lynch made quite a formidable job by cutting out trivial stuff and put his own ideas on it [I really am not a "like in the book" defender anyways]

Well, the problem with the movie was it seemed disorganized. That is the only thing I hated about it. I loved everything else.
It's the T.V Series that was the real disaster....

hello Svanya:
There seems to be a really wild fire debate among Dune fans. Ones adore Lynchs´version, the others simply hate it [and prefer the tv series].
Now imagine Jodorowskys original take on it... 16 hours of a movie. Do you imagine yourself siited in the theatre for 16 hours watching Salvador Dali and Mick Jagger performing?
And the guy still wants to do it...

I would sit 16 hours in a theater to watch something beautiful, yes.
The T.V series made the people look like technicolor clowns. I hated the outfits sooo much.

The Jodorowsky version is the one movie never made I wish was. Though, if you read all his comics [Incal, techopriests, etc] it is pretty much his ideas for dune played out on paper.
And they are fucking awesome.
On topic: Never watched the TV miniseries, but keep planning on it. I love the lynch movie but I view it as more 80's action sci-fi then a serious version of the book.

@david 1, Lynch's Dune is one of my favorite films ever, gorgeous even... just doesn't fit the novels the way it should have. And yes, the non-canon material was great like you said... very imaginative in a great way. Would love to see someone try Dune again!

David 1,
Oh Ya! I love that movie.. a really good sci fi needs a bizzare director. I mean if they can do Harry Potter movies and the teen vampire movies.. why can't they do a few Dunes?
May 07, 2012
I think the main fault with Lynch's movie is that after the massive cuts it was hard to follow for those who hadnt read the books. The 3 hr alternate(fan edited) cut is pretty good IMO.
Ive never seen the Dune mini series, but I recently watched the "Children of Dune" mini and thought it was very good.
I wish Ridley would start a new Dune franchise rather than revisit BR after Prometheus.
May 07, 2012
I also heard that the most recent attempt ( 2010-11 I think ) at reviving the franchise has been canned.
Oh well.
May 07, 2012
I must admit that I have not read the book (s), but for me it is a very interesting Lynch sci-fi adaptation movie, not for the summer blockbuster audience.
Those scenes with the Baron Harkonnen scarred me for life.

I love David Lynch but didn't like Dune. I did like the miniseries but totally understand some of the problems people have with it. If anyone has seen Mollholland Drive and can explain what they believe transpired in it I am all ears!!
I really enjoyed Children of Dune. I am certainly thankful for the casting as I believe this is the film that put James McAvoy on the map, so to speak.

Swanya:
I would too ^.^ [now, imagine that you're watching it and, all of a sudden, Salvador Dali comes out of the screen by ripping it with a medieval spear. LOL] ahhh, the oufits... the Spacing Guild ones were... argh.
Shane:
That is my opinion too. Why is it mandatory that a movie based on a novel must be EXACTLY like the novel? Somethings don't work in a movie as they do in a book. Yeah, and Jodorowsky is still dreaming of it.
Freeze Him:
yeah, I would love to see the Jodorowskys version. It seems the dude wants to put people allucinating as if they were on drugs. That is his own words and we can see him saying that on youtube.
Shambhala:
^.^ me toooooo
danrald:
I'm still hoping for a God Emperor of Dune movie version. Kudus my friend.
Time23:
Yeah, De Laurentis wasn't nice at all. I've watched the fan cut version. I really did enjoy it. And I would just LOVE to see Sir Ridleys atempt on Dune.
Cryo:
hehehe, yeah, the Baron stuff was surreal. "HE who controls the Spice, controls the Universe"
IrishAndroid1:
I'm into believing that most of Lynch's work goes around the same topics: love and absurdity, both intertwined. At least thats my personal take on his work, and I see those things all over it. But, really, if it is true in Mollholland Drive it should be as true in all his other works.

Great Movie period. The novels, well you cant make a 2hr movie, and please everyone, but I think it's a Sci Fi master piece, and stands the test of time.

David 1,
The Naked lunch movie I found on VHS in a old down town store. Love It! Possibly the weirdest movie of all time.

IAMSTARBEAST:
yeah, Naked lunch is as weird as it gets, but a great brain feeder.
canwegetsomenewalienbooks:
Man, there are very few novel-based movies that really nail down the story and aesthetics. Lynch's version is [IMHO] just... GRAND! A bit curious about that Jorodowsky version though...
