SCI-FI influences in Prometheus

After watching the different trailers and the designs seen on them, I believe the film will be a homage to lots of different Sci-fi titles from past decades. In one of Ridley Scott's interviews, he says the film is based in Erich Von Daniken's theories on ancient astronauts and their influence on the development of mankind. Well, there were these comics from 1979 titled "The Gods of the Universe" with art by famous Polish artist Boguslaw Polch based in Daniken's theories. I believe Scott read those back in the late 70s and used some of their designs as inspiration for the spacesuits in Prometheus... Check out this Spanish edition cover of one of those comics. If anything we should see the obviouse Gieger stuff pluss a lot Jean Giraud. AKA Moebius pluss like i said beffore Shaklespeare, and ofcourse greek/and or other antient mythology. Im 37 years old and im pretty sure r.s droped the comics about the same time i picked them up and frankly manga hasnt contibuted jack and or sh*it to any good western films since maybe satr wars and i dont think its gona happen anytime soon. If you mention any film based an a line of games and or toys., i will not respond.

dont forget R.S. was directing dune before he quit due to a death in the familly and lynch took the job. This by the way is why gieger did geidi prime stuff.

didnt say it contributed nothing just ,nothing mutch to "good western film". Didnt say gieger did any better and its just an oppinion man. its mine and mine alone alone. not the end all be all but still mine and i felt inclined to share. btw never said i didnt like manga there is just sooo, soo much of it and you have to really look to find something originall. still looking forward to the live action silent film lone wolf an cub. Not holding breath though. :)

Another influence I see is in the Space Jockey/Engineer race design. They now look a lot like the humanoid alien giants from The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? sci-fi anime film from 1984... @Twitch: Macross Do You Remember Love is very very different from Robotech/Macross saga. I recommend you watch the anime film, is awesome. The Zentradi in Macross DYRL now are bald and more alien looking, with biomechanoid looking technology that regenerates itself. Fun thing is the creators of Macross said they based their designs in those of Giger! I find the SJ spaceship tech in Prometheus very Zentradi-looking.

Lets take it back a bit further, try forbiden planet being a retelling of the tempest. Sorry i find it hard to belive that Ridley sees the macross stuff as being anything other than Jap Crap pulled from heavy m, If hes seen it at all.

@Twitch: Sorry to hear you don't like manga and anime. You really do not know what you are missing dude. Macross and many other Japanese anime sci-fi series have very impressive designs, even better than those of many western big budget sci-fi films. BTW, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Planeta Bur or Planet of the Storms (1962), a Russian Sci-Fi film directed by Pavel Klushantsev which clearly inspired the spacesuits, hehe. But do not forget the most obvious influences: Theories of the Ancient Astronauts and the myth of Prometheus:

There is allot of good stuff in manga i just dont see it as influensing this film. Hell i grew up playing with the bandai robots. Just dont see them as realevant to this story.

That scene from "Planet of the Vampires" in which they find an alien ship, with the big alien skeleton always reminds me the space jockey in his chair.

Yes, Manga has contributed nothing. That is the silliest thing I have read in years. Like it or not manga had a hell of a lot more influence then Giger ever will. Maybe try to not sound like your opinion is be all and end all twitch. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean you can write it off. I fucking hate the Beatles but musically I can't write because their influence is everywhere. Manga is all over. And yes it has been in some terrible shit and some great stuff.

I'm still waiting on the live-action Evangelion...by Peter Jackson and WETA Workshop!! That rumor actually had me going for a couple of years... Great animes: Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ghost in the Shell, Escaflowne, Akira, Cowboy Bebop, Spirited Away, Berserk. If the American studios used some of those to influence Sci-fi/fantasy, we would be much better off than we have been...

Shane

MemberOvomorphMay-14-2012 10:57 AM
I hate Peter Jackson, and he would ruin evangelion. I do not believe the guy could do the depression felt in that series justice at all. Evangelion is a series about fucked up character who happen to pilot gaint robots [and are really too young to understand what they are truly doing]. Jackson has never had a character in any of his films I have felt anything for. He has never done anything that bleak in a sad way [bleak in a misanthropic way yes]. I think it would be awful. As awful as the new American Akira will be? That I don't know. The idea of that throws me for a loop. It will never work. Akira is my Star Wars. It is pure nostalgia for me. I bought the english versions of the manga from day one to the last issue epic put out. Love that series so much. Think I am gonna splurg on the Dark Horse versions today.

There is also this 1987 sci-fi horror film which has an alien that gets inside your mouth and turns you into a super strong mutant zombie. Is called THE HIDDEN... @Dunn Your post reminded me of a film my son had been telling me about for a long time and thought I would enjoy it....I'm really late to this field/genre....and the film you gotta know this one, my kid tells me it's a staple.. "Ghost in the Shell" I was totally knocked out by this,,,would be an incredible live action if they used the film as storyboards...just hated it when it was over and my son said that was it...no more..no sequel I guess...
