Natalie Portman instead of Noomi

I've always been a huge Natalie Portman fan and it's my understanding she was in strong consideration for the role of Shaw (which eventually went to Noomi). Given what we have seen so far, I am curious as to how the movie would go with Natalie as the lead (better/worse) or just a general consensus.

I like her too...but when it comes to Sci-Fi...and Prequals.....I think she may be covered in the stink that was the last three Star Wars movies. For me at any rate. It would detract from the film...I'd be constantly waiting for her to burst out with "Oh Anakin"!.....

I love Natalie too. It's the nerd in me but I am always fascinated by those "what if" casting situations for movies I love or want to see. I like Noomi too but they are very different actors.

Its hard to say really...
I think maybe Ridley wants to go and give more unknown actors a break...
For Alien fans it makes no difference, its cheaper for Ridley to cast less known actors etc just like Cloverfield did.... only this movie has some pretty well known Actors Guy Peirce being the mainone, followed by Charlize Theron.
Fassbender who is a up and comming actor... So this movie could help their causes.
But would also give chance to the other less known cast to make a impression.
Alien made Sigourney Weaver she was even less known than Noomi Rapace was before Prometheus...
Yes having more well known actors would interest the general public, as from the reaction i saw in Trailers at Cinema was not that great, some recognised Theron in Snow White but then never did again after in Prometheus...
But expensive actors means more cash, which means either less budget for other things.... or more pressure on how well the movie does, as if it dont make a lot of cash then Fox wont give the Green Light for Number 2.

I agree She is known for her Star war roles and I feel Noomi is the perfect actress for this role.

Noomi is a bit more exotic, but Natalie could have worked well in this roll too. Noomi will probably pull of "bad ass" a bit better when she has too. I FULLY approve of how they cast Eli Shaw for this, though. :•)

@Mithra
I really wish i had a time machine to go back and stop they starwars films
just watched them all back to back recently 1st 3 in my eyes is the best sci fi franchise ever made. Then we get the last 3 that ( excuse my language )
arse raped the franchise. Use of bad cgi & that thing we call ja ja binks god!!!!
indiana jones and the kingdom of the crystal skull was ass raped as well. They should have really left these movies as they where..
hope RS dosnt make the same mistakes.

Have I told you lately...,
that I love you?

Ugh...are you freaking kidding me? Noomi is hand over fist a bazillion times the actress. If you can't see/hear that, you are either ignorant (sorry, but it's true), or have an unhealthy fix on Natalie Portman (PLEASE see a psychiatrist.).

It'sLikeAnAnthiveMay 21, 2012
lol Otto, I've never really been a huge fan of Natalie Portman, though she is a good actress. Personally I think Noomi will do an amazing job and play the role better as I can not really picture Natalie pulling off the bad ass.

Natalie portman did a fantastic job in The Professional. I have not seen Black Swan but I have heard she did well with that.
Still, I'm afraid seeing her is this film would make me think of Queen Panda Skywalker too much.

RosesrubellaMay 21, 2012
Technically it was Mila eating Natalie...
Off topic, anyways. Both are great actresses, though I didn't originally think so. I was worried when they announced Noomi was competing with Portman, but then I saw Black Swan and stopped fretting. But Natalie Portman is more high-profile, and it would have been easy for Prometheus to have become 'that one sci-fi movie with the hot lesbian ballerina'. Can't say for the overall product. It's a good parallel to the "what if Meryl Streep had gotten Ripley" question though.

the casting of the movie seems to be right i just couldnt see Natalie playing a gritty part as much as i think shes good at what she dose she wasnt picked for this movie for a resson

Deckard_B26354May 21, 2012
I love Portman but to me there's no question...Noomi all the way.
I just can't see Portman being as strong as Noomi. I can however see Noomi being as vulnerable and soft as Portman.

Natalie Portman would be too much of a distraction for me. If I was on the ship, and an Alien was running straight at me, I would be like "Oh Hi Natalie," and then get turned inside out... love hurts.

OttoMay 21, 2012
@Deckard...
Nailed it, man...I have nothing against Natalie, For the record...just not the right person for the part.
HephaestaMay 21, 2012
Forgive me, but I'm totally with Otto on this issue. Natalie Portman is about as boring as the wallpaper that killed Oscar Wilde. I think her one attack of passable acting was in Black Swan and, let's face it, the role she played was practically written for her. No wonder she nailed that one...she could have slept through it and bagged an OSCAR. It was her very own Desperately Seeking Susan. Just about anyone on the planet could run circles around that cute little lump, and Noomi Rapace?! Make that a trillion circles.

Natalie reached the peak of her acting career with her lesbian sex scene - she should have just retired after that.

i read somewhere that Theron was gonna play "shaw"...but because at the time she was already committed to the new Mad Max she could not take the leading role and opted for the smaller role of Vickers...then Mad Max got delayed and oh well.... i am happy with Noomi......I have not seen her in a movie yet...but have heard that she was outstanding in "Girl with the Dragon tattoo"...and i very much liked what I have seen of her character in the trailers....so I think she will do a great job!
As for Natalie....she a good actress and she's come along way...but I just don't see her as "Shaw"....it would be the same as casting Winona Rider in Alien Resurrection.....I know she was terrible.....but i seen her in better roles more suited to her acting style....interestingly she also played a small role in black swan....and she was greatly applauded!
KanonMay 24, 2012
Seeing the promo clips for the movie, I think Noomi Rapace was the right choice for the role of Shaw, I don't think Natalie Portman would have been a good choice for the part, she's an over-exposed actress anyway, so it's wonderful to see someone new shine in this movie.
artyohMay 24, 2012
If you've seen Rapace in the original "Girl with/who etc......" trilogy, you should have absolutely no doubt about her extraordinary abilities.
