MemberOvomorphMay-27-2012 6:54 AMA bit unrelated, but the reason I love the movie Sphere is the whole mystery of it, why is there a 300 year old spacecraft in the bottom of the ocean? the build up is awesome...later the movie does start to fall apart, but I think it is very underrated despite this
I guess the reason I mention this is, because Prometheus is set to be another mystery sci-fi, where there are a lot of questions at the start, which may or may not get answered fully...this is definitely my favourite type of sci-fi, one that has stimulating concepts
It's sort of ironic that the great mystery in Alien was the space jockey, which is now going to be explained in Prometheus, but without revealing too much to ruin the mystery lol

Thought it was an excellent film.
Loved the concept and loved the build up. When they go exploring the ship was really creepy and loved the moment when Dustin Hoffman and Sharon Stone see the hologram of the ship's log.
Also had some great creepy moments with the jelly fish attack, the talk with the entity etc.
Also the score by Elliot Goldenthal is fantastic.
Also thought the ending was quite moving.
Brilliant film - clever script, great performances, great effects, powerful score - deffo great sci-fi and hope Prometheus is off this quality or higher.

MemberOvomorphMay-27-2012 7:08 AMFunny you mention Sphere, I watched it late night for the 10th time.
Great movie with a great concept and interesting script.
It also raises the question on 1st encounter behaviour. "Jerry is happy"

Very sensibile sci-fi aimed at adults with more than 2 brain cells!

And that is the nature of true, hide behind the sofa, check under the bed horror... our imaginations!
In short yes love it, it tickles my intelligence!

I think the last part of your statement explains the first. In studios minds there's not enough adult sci-fi fans with more than 2 brain cells to make enough money. I hope we prove them wrong with Prometheus.
As far as Sphere. It always looked a lot like Event Horizon to me which I didn't think was terrible but didn't particularly care for either. Based on that I never really gave Sphere a full watch.
I think because of the lack of really good, intelligent sci-fi we lower our standards sometimes because we have such love for the genre that there is need we have to fill. So mediocre films end up being considered very good and underrated and all that.
I will give it a full-on watch though now that people say it's good.
How do y'all(I'm from Texas) feel about Event Horizon though? If y'all thinks it's comparable to Sphere then I take it back, I'm not giving it a watch lol.

Well, they are 2 diferent movies altogether.
Sphere is not sci-fi horror per se, more like a sci-fi thriller. Event Horizon on the other hand is pretty much Space Gore Fest.
I like both of them for very diferent reasons. One think though, the acting is very good. And plot-wise are very well conceived

MemberOvomorphMay-27-2012 10:29 AMDeckard_B26354 All those movies: Sphere, Event Horizon and James Cameron's The Abyss borrowed heavily from Stanislaw Lem's novel Solaris, which was made into a movie by Andrei Tarkovsky and remade by Steven Soderbergh. However, I believe the novel should be revisited, because there is an epic side to it that Tarkovsky didn't explore. The descriptions of the alien phenomena are so vivid and "alien" that, with the help of the latest technologies in visual effects, it would make for an spectacle hard to forget on the big screen. Lem also wrote The Invincible, a story about an expedition aboard the eponymous starship, who are exposed to mortal danger when stranded on a strange planet. There is a description of a storm in that book that reminds me of the storm in Prometheus.

MemberOvomorphMay-27-2012 7:10 PMHey all
so, as a child I have read Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton a number of times, because the film got me crazy and I have wanted to be a 'dinosaurologist' since I was 5 or 6 (and turned into one since then! yay!). Anyway, following that I read the Lost World and carried on with many Crichton books, many of them being seriously good...
Reading Sphere really was thrilling and it no doubt was my favorite one (J.Park playing in a different league obviously). The book is really inspiring and mysterious with a very unique atmosphere and sense of 'something great lying there'. So when the movie was announced, and the cast along that, I was very enthusiastic.
Actually, I must say I was really really disappointed watching it by how bland and shallow it felt. It sure is not terribly bad, and maybe the anticipation played a role in my deception. But honestly I am quite level-headed and never rouse myself crazy even younger. Plus I went in a very positive mind and was ready to forgive a lot, even just for I like Dustin Hoffman so much. Just, the book gave so much more and finer backgound depth...
So, I might watch it again sometime soon, but in the mean time I most sincerely encourage that you guys read the book. Crichton is very easy to read and I have absolutely no doubt you will love it.

MemberOvomorphMay-27-2012 8:06 PM]The thing is....Sphere the film is not quite Sphere the novel....the problem with the film, and I'm not saying it's bad because it isn't, is that a film can't quite capture the essence of the ideas presented in the novel.......it's very hard to to produce a visual representation of the affect of an alien device that physically produces the material of human thought....and please excuse me, but my description is a piss pore explanation of the complexities exibited in Crichton's plot structure......

MemberOvomorphMay-30-2012 2:37 PMI forget the exact details but Warner Bros., who had rights to 'Sphere' was having trouble finding a director who wanted anything to do with it, and so they worked out a deal with Barry Levinson. Levinson would direct 'Sphere', but only if he could direct 'Wag the Dog' first, which was the project he wanted.
So, we have a film based on a decent but hardly spectacular screenplay made by a director who didn't want to be there. Net result = mediocre.
