What is this thing?

The movie is so dark and I know some folks wouldn't bother watching it again and all that, so it may not have registered for some, but the adult aliens (and NOT the Queen, oddly) have these weird crowns on their head.

This image was brightened by... a lot. But you can see what I mean, right?
Thing is, avp:r is the kind of movie where nothing is truly original it's basically just recreations of scenes for other movies. The trophy case is littered with allusions to everything from the space jockey to the cyclops from 7th Voyage of Sinbad. But these crowns are something I've never seen before. I've scoured this and the Predator 2 trophy room and no other skull present has anything like this. I'm not big on the comics, although I have read some of them (but no solo predator ones, for obvious reasons), and I've never seen anything there either. I've played the first and third avp games, and some 80's and 90's licensed alien games (konami shooters and junk), but, again, nothing else looks like this.
Am I simply not nerd enough to get this? It seems like a stretch to say the... um... whoever directed that movie (I honestly don't remember if I ever knew their names... there's two, right?) actually created something original, but didn't even bother putting its host in the trophy skull too.
I really feel like this skull is a reference to a comic book or some other EU thing that I'm just not familiar with? Anyone else have any ideas what this thing is? The host, I mean. Crown creature guy. Whatever it is.
