@orangecat Does it matter? Damon was still partially responsible for writing the script along with Jon Spaiths. And the similarities between LOST and Prometheus, i.e confuse rather then convince, leads us to an obvious conclusion; That Damon should stay away from writing more scripts in the future. He even mentioned that he wanted to make a documentary about bread. Very innovative and epic.

Vickers character is terribly written IMO, her actions don't just risk the failure of the mission, they put the whole crew including weyland at risk. There is another thread where these are discussed in more detail.

I don't recall Vickers saying that she picked them. While her language at times reflects her desire to be in charge, when she's speaking to Shaw and Holloway she makes it clear that it was Weylands decision to brign them along. She does make it clear that she represents the company, and that they are employees, but I don't recall that she had a hand in selecting them. After all, she wasn't fond of the mission, so why would her Dad let her. He seems to repeatedly go out of her way to show her that he is in control, not her. Fifield's only incompetence seems to be in getting lost, which is a major mystery, for 2 reasons, firstly, in the plot, he's the one who launches the search probes and takes instructions from some display that they give, and secondly, in what may well be a blooper, his locator beacon (and Milburns) is clearly visible on the 3D map on the bridge of the Prometheus, even when the captain is asking them for their location (in fairness to the actor, during filming he can't see that, so it's not obvious to him, that he's being stupid.) Milburn isn't necessarily incompetent academically as a biologist, but he's an idiot, and an inconsistent one. One scene he agrees to leave with Fifield (who clearly dislikes him) makes no sense. Fifield wants nothing to do with giant dead creatures, cos he's a geologist. But Milburn is a biologist, who should relish the chance to study a bona fide extra terrestial corpse. But no he's terrified, and is not curious when Janek tells him there's a life form one click west , he says he doesn't want to go there. And yet the minute he sees the snake-like alien, he wants to pet it. WTF? Janek's bloopers include not seeing the locator beacons (yellow squares with crew intitials above them) on the 3D map, and also, saying "Fifields at the door, according to the readout... again, this may be a blooper that the actor couldn't have spotted during filming, assuming that the video image is added in later... but while he is saying this, we the audience can see Fifield is twisted up like a wreck on the camera display, before the cargo bay door opens. Only after it opens does Janek say "hey wait a minute". Which is of course too late for the 3 guys that are kiled by the zombie Fifield.
