""Prometheus took first place in 14 of its 15 markets and earned an estimated $35 million this weekend. In Russia, its $11.1 million is the third-highest opening for a Fox movie behind Avatar and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, and its $9.99 million debut in the U.K. is the best ever for a Ridley Scott movie. 3D was a big part of that U.K. result, as the premium-priced format accounted for 73 percent of sales. Finally, Prometheus's $7.06 million start in France is the second-best debut this year for an English-language movie behind The Avengers. Along with its U.S. opening, Prometheus expands in to 35 markets including Australia, South Korea, and Taiwan next weekend.""
it looks good ... half of markets overseas and only the first weekend ...and already 35 mil .... im think it will be around 150 mil overseas at the end plus 160-180 USA ...something around 300-350 millions is not a dream and will assure a sequel

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 4:56 PMCool. So commercial success is a sign of quality now?! Who or what is it good for? A sequel? Considering how good some people think this movie is it seems they were looking ahead to a sequel the moment they walked out of the cinema! Shouldn't a good movie leave you somewhat more fulfilled than looking ahead to what might come next?!

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 4:58 PMIt doesn't make it a good movie. Just a big pop corn flick for the masses. And a bunch of misleaded people that think it will be epic. I thought the same and i was so wrong.

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 5:02 PMwell im pleased its a financial success it may be the reason a sequel will get green lit and some of the questions posed in prometheus can be addressed in the sequel .
I guess anticipation breeds expectation and ours has been fulled by this forum and the lengthy debates have helped to fuel our imaginations to absurd levels which is natural in any film to have and highlight the positive, and negative, points of any film. I just hope that a longer cut on blue ray or a sequel will overcome some of the views that appear less favourable and some of the burning questions the film raised can be addressed.

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 5:08 PMif this movie does not reach $500 million at the box office ridley and lindeloff wont be doing the next 1 its as simple as that, James cameron generated 2.4 billion at the box office with avatar, Ridley had a $130 mill budget, it was in 3d, the promotion was class a perfection, i think theres no excuses if it doesnt make fox a $400 mill profit.

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 5:48 PMI havent seen the movie yet but let me disagree with somethings that are stated in this topic and in this forum:
1. A poor box performance does not guarantee a top quality film neither a blockbuster is necessarily a poor popcorn movie for the mindless audiences. Altough certain patterns that seems to repeat over time each movie deserves its own analysis despite his box performance.
2. Each person reacts to a movie in a particular way according to his own expectations, knowledge and someones to the general consensus that is created around the movie. Expect always haters and inconditional lovers no matter what is the movie we discuss about, with their passionate points of view and reasons trying to impose their position as the ultimate true.
3. Why dont expect a sequel if we really like the movie ? Is this a sign of a poor movie ? Certainly not, just the wish to extend the ideas that we like in the movie. But should a good movie always have a sequel ? Not necessarily, sometimes is better leave a masterpiece alone with no further installments.
Respect others opinions and try to see the movie from different perspectives.
I expect a good movie next thursday ... they cant be all wrong ...

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 11:32 PMA high box office gross only means that the studio's marketing worked.
That is all.

MemberOvomorphJun-04-2012 12:38 AMLet's be honest Prometheus could have been 2 hours of RS jerking into a bowl of cornflakes and it still would have done well at the box office because of how well it was marketed and or of high expectations of Ridley returning to the genre

Nah, after 30 minutes "of RS jerking into a bowl of cornflakes", I would have walked out. My tolerance for watching "cornflake bowl jerking" isn't what it used to be when I was a much younger lad. ; )
Question: There was a thread here about "opening weekend box-office predictions". We won't know the 6/1 weekend's until tomorrow. Will the "opening weekend" include what the 6/8-ers add to that figure? If so, I believe my prediction of "$100 million+" will be dwarfed. Please note: I am not correlating high box-office totals to the quality of the product. I agree that there was some really good marketing at work here.

I won't be happy if it flops. Actually I'm not fussed either way because I didn't think it was particularly good. I like to think that genuinely good movies deserve to do well as opposed to blockbuster movies that are hyped to death, cost a fortune to make, have hugely high expectations, look amazing but lack any real substance or narrative ....... Erm, that reminds me of something!! As for a sequel. I guess I'm all for that, especially now expectations have been firmly grounded. But a fantastic sequel for me won't iron out the shortcomings of this film. It's not about plot holes and questions. It wasn't done very well IMO. Looked amazing and some fantastic highs but tempered with some really bad stuff that I never would have thought RS was capable of until seeing this film.

MemberOvomorphJun-04-2012 2:47 AMLet's be honest.....Alien was slammed by most critics and referred to as an empty bag of tricks. It did do well at the box office though.
Prometheus seems to be doing quite well on both fronts. Fortunately its not the disgruntled faction of a fan-community that decides a movies critical and commercial fate.

MemberOvomorphJun-04-2012 2:59 AMOnly a very small fraction of movie watchers spend their time on movie forum sites & posting reviews. WE are in an extreme minority. Mainstream movie-goers appear to have liked the movie (or were at least motivated to see it due to the marketing campaign). Most will watch it and forget it.....until it comes out on BluRay and many will buy it.

MemberOvomorphJun-04-2012 9:37 AMWhat ? So now leaving the cinema wanting more is a negative ???

MemberOvomorphJun-04-2012 4:12 PMSince when is "cashing in" a sign of a good movie?
let's see...
TWILIGHT saga.... horrific, yet cashes in...
The greatest movies [the really great movies] never did good at the box office.
But I digress...
