Is greed stopping directors bringing us the movies they want us to see

MemberOvomorphJune 05, 2012868 Views11 RepliesIs it about time studios stopped worrying more about making massive profits and start letting directors bring us the movies they want to without any outside influences from studios etc
With RS having recently said that getting the cut of the movie right could be worth as much as 80million should he just have brought us the movie he envisioned with out having to worry about this
are studios right to hinder the directors vision in order to protect their investment
And should a director worry about what a movie is going to make or bring us the movie he and he alone wants us to see
I look forwards to your thoughts

I wonder what the Avengers would have been like without all the circus behind it. I feel that the Hulk, finally, saved the movie. Not a fan of the prior Hulk movies, not a fan of the Avenger movie. So, the Hulk is my favorite character in the Avengers next to Tony Stark. I haven't seen Prometheus yet, so I'll chime in on it once I've seen it.

the "art" of film in regards to a major studio (like Fox) is long gone
the bottom line is profit. i don't care who says it's about "the film"
when it deals with big-budget studio heads, who care more about
breaking even / profit gain
i well understand that film making, specifically a film like
PROMETHEUS is not a low cost endeavor, at the same time,
it does compel film directors to somewhat curb their true intent
even a master like Scott must have been pressured to do his best
to make a film that will sell those all too precious teenage tickets
i was glad to see that PROMETHEUS got a proper "R-Rating"
Scott has said that the cut we see in the theater, IS the cut he
intended, but i do wonder had he not even had a discussion
abut the rating of his film, would that have freed him up a bit
more creatively speaking??
guess i'll never know

ah in the uk prometheus got a 15 rating which i always assumed was the equivalent to a pg-13 and R would be an 18 in the uk

I deffinately believe Prometheus was meant to be hardcore violence and disgust/gore r rated 3hrs (ish) long. but as always movie studio got it cut and watered down to make the moolah but also made the movie very crappy and forgettable. It NEEDED shock and scare value! The startrek/superman soundtrack just didn't fit whatsoever!

hard to say what WE WANT to see since we have all different tastes ... but if you ask 130 millions to make a movie its obvious that there must be some return,
Regarding shocking violence and gore its not part of Ridleys Scott's art ....im sure he did never intended something more graphic or disgusting .

shocking violence and gore is not part of ridleys art i agree but when he does it well he re defines genres alien and gladiator my prime examples
and with prometheus set to make over 100 milion its opening weekend how much of a profit is enough to give him a free reign on his next project or perhaps a sequel?

these studios need to quit giving us these trillion dollar turds, and just give us a movie that is exciting and jaw dropping. concentrate on the script and story, instead of trying to white wash it with millions of dollars worth of cgi effects in place of anything with substance. prometheus could have been epic, but instead its a big expensive bore.

It's about time geek-communities started being respectful of artists and not mistaking them for their slaves. JRR Martin wrote something interesting about this a couple of years ago...remind me to find that piece.

I don't see why we cant have great movies that do really well at the box office. That obviously happens a lot if the film cost peanuts to make but brings in a mint. The studios love those films. The King's Speech (a great film) was very cheap to make but created a fortune! That film even prompted David Cameron (UK Priminister for those that don't know) to prompt film studio to invest in projects that would be commercially succseful. This idea was lauded by the film industry because of course how can you know if a film will be a commercial success before its released commercially?! (Cameron is a bit of a dweeb truth be told).
The way I see it though is if they are going to spend the money at least the people making the film do what they want. I've no doubt Ridley Scott was left to his devices once the budget was agreed. But I also wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't some meddling by the studio, after all. It is there money. Ridley had to fight tooth & nail to get a lot of the stuff done in Alien & Blade Runner. Even with his pedigree I guess there's no reason to suggest studio bosses are any less careful with their money. Especially in the current financial climate.

We have to remember that Ridley scott has good potential i mean who can falt Alien and Blade Runner..
He was always up against it, just as the Star Wars Prequels was....
Because Alien and Blade Runner set a very very high bar, just like Star Wars EP4-6.... Why they wont even make a ET 2 because the potential is there that you just wont top the orginal movie.
Yes FOX are the big players, we dont know how much controll Ridley had with the Trailers and TV Spots that gave too much away, we cant blame Ridley for that.
Bottom line its about making money...
Ridley said that if a movie is aimed at a PG-13 to 15 then that opens up a larger potential audience as far as potential box office... Age makes no difference on DVD etc because well a Parent could rent or buy a 18/R and allow a 12-15 year old to see it...
But in the cinema the millions of 12-15 year olds who would go see a certain movie would not be able to if it was 18/R
Ridley has admited that cuts was made as far as gory scenes...
I mean imagine if you shot a movie where someone aims a Shot gun at someones head and then blows their head to bits.... you cant get away with that gore for a 15...
So a 15 cut would show the gun been fired then the body on floor it would not show the actually head blowing up....
Ok they may allow Andriods to be ripped apart, because they wont be seen as Human... thats why in some games Blood is changed to different colour.... Like in Carmagedon game Humans was changed to Zombies....
But a movie that makes such cuts will show them in the DVD release...
Also i would not be suprised if the DVD/Blu-Ray has some extra exciting scenes just so that FOX can Milk Money out of the fans...
Again Ridley Scott cant be blamed....
End of the Day if FOX want to make Prometheus 2 that has Xenos and Face Hugger running all over the place, because they feel that would make more money....
Then Sadly Ridley would have to play ball, or FOX would just get someone else to do the movie....

I think what we saw is the movie Ridley wanted to make, unless he's planning to drop a three hour version at some later date to home video. I think the biggest enemy of this movie was the secrecy in the preproduction stage. If more people had been able to look at the script there would definitely have been a few changes and we would have gotten a better film.
