The idea that he shall somehow please/appease Fox - who will naturally want a return on their investment - precisely through disappointing the most obvious market (i.e. the sorts of good folk who inhabit this here site, for instance) is an odd one. My impression is that a great many people were extremely eager - nay, starving, chomping at the bit, straining against the leash - to see 'Prometheus' but have had their enthusiasm dashed by the experience of seeing the film itself. Contrary to your assertion, Ridley Scott certainly did NOT 'grip' all members of his 'audience' and leave them wanting 'to know more'. Whether there are sequels, good or bad, remains to be seen. Notwithstanding the obvious set-up for one at the end of the film, it will be determined by the financial success or failure overall. But I would suggest that 'Prometheus' is a bit of a dud, however one may wish to spin it. Would Scott consciously make an underwhelming film just to whet our appetites for something better in a subsequent project? That makes very little sense. 'Alien' was made in 1979, 'Blade Runner' in 1982. I think we should be prepared to consider the possibility that Ridley Scott no longer has the particular aptitudes that lent themselves to the creation of those two genre-defining films. Some music fans persist in a misguided belief that Brian Wilson can make another 'Pet Sounds' (conveniently ignoring the decades that have elapsed since that album and the deep changes in Wilson's personality and psychology). Ridley Scott has not experienced the same difficulties that Brian Wilson has, thank heavens; but like any other human being, Scott has changed enormously over time. He was forty-two when he made 'Alien'; he is now seventy-four. Just think about that for a moment. Do you think you'll be the same person and have the same artistic sensibilities at two such disparate times in your life? I am inclined to think that Scott's return to science-fiction was a mistake. To be honest, I am rather surprised that he bothered.

@stg pinback Sir Ridley is a genius end of. Past and future. Thats why so many people want to work with him. Prometheus is a good film with slight glitches. That I'm hoping like many other fans after Moses and blade runner Prometheus 2 will be out come 2014

Just because he wanted to do another 2 movies doesn't mean he has to make the first one so badly. To be honest after watching Prometheus I don't really have any more interest in seeing how the so called story is going to pan out...

@facebugger Yeah man - I gotta get over Prometheus aftershock.. Its wearing me out now... I think I care more about how its tarnished the dark but beautiful mystery of the original Aliens Derelict/Space Jockey scene...... Scott may as well have taken a big steaming dump on his legacy.....
