In human mythology it's said that prometheus betrayed the other gods by giving man fire. An incredible power which would allow us to advance very quickly. As punishment he was sentenced to have his liver eaten every single day by an Eagle, over and over again.
Is it possible that the mural is depicting just that? A xeno of some kind, about to/in the process of attacking prometheus and getting at his liver. It looks almost like blood splashing from the engineers side in the mural. It also looks as though he is trying to push its head away.
The film implies heavily that the jockeys created man and are often hinted at as "gods" in both the TED viral and throughout key points of the film. Especially given that the movie itself is called Prometheus it heavily suggests that one of the Jockeys helped the humans with technology and was then punished. They then created works of art depicting his treachery to discourage any of the other Engineers to attempt to aid the humans. It would make sense to have this mural on display on what is essentially a weapon to destroy the human race. Anyone who disobeys orders suffers a similar fate as Prometheus?
It also gives reason to the engineers wanting to destroy the humans before we got too advanced. They knew that with fire we would catch up to them very quickly (relative to space-time) seeing as we had almost identical DNA to them and they were incredibly advanced themselves and saw us as a potential future threat. Seeing as they were dead 2000 years before we even got to the planet it proves they were planning to get rid of us long before we had the technology to defend ourselves. But in just those 2000 years we had a spaceship knocking at their door.
Anyway it's just a theory! Let me know what you think!
