Cave Paintings?

Squibby

Sorry if this has been discussed before. Overall I like Prometheus, but a few things are bugging me. For instance, how did "ancient civilizations" know about the Engineer star system? Are we to assume that the Engineers returned to Earth later to teach them about the star system?

Perhaps they were just saying we come from this star system rather than specifically inviting us. Still strange that they gave us the address of their secret military base but I guess they never expected us to turn up.

that's been on my mind as well, I guess we are supposed to assume they did return to Earth to check on it's progress. Why once they discovered Humans, they'd give them clues to find their bioweapons outpost I have no clue...

...The engineers told them where the star system was...as it was thoroughly explained...

I can't remember which thread I read it in but someone suggested that it may have been a simple and unfortunate mistake that the first star system they investigated contained the Engineers bioweapons facility, not their homeworld.

The Prometheus crew were the ones who chose LV-223, the Engineers didn't specifically designate it as the place to be.

Yes I started a new post because this bugs me more than anything about the movie. Was it an invite, or warning? Also, there are two pictograms in Holloway's presentation that contain dates after the catastrophic event on LV-223. I think that everything in the film is so well done except for the use of these pictograms because now they really make no sense after finding out about the dates. I assumed, at first, that there was just two warring factions like angels and demons or good engineers and bad engineers because of all the religous references. In addition, Scott had stated the derelict in alien was a bomber used in an ancient war. Maybe a war between the gods further backing this. I do not think that it was a bio weapon facility that is just what the pilot said, so maybe that was not so unfortunate.

Might have been me that pointed out that Holloway's methodology of eliminating the other six stars is flawed, plus he ingores that in the scottish cave drawing the figure appears to point to the central star. On first viewing I thought it was the right most one, Alpha Mensae, but on a close look it seems to be Zeta 1 Reticuli. But they prometheus went to the left most star in the image Gliese 81, from what I can figure (and its the only one of the 6 that the distance from earth matches.) Also there must be a deliberate reason that he included the Hawai'ian drawing. I think it's to torpedo people's suspicions that the attack was revenge for killing Jesus. The islands of Hawai'i were settled around 300 CE (not BCE)... and the painting is dated 680 CE. Notice here, that where it's proper science they use CE and BCE rather than AD and Bc which have religious overtones. But Shaw and Weyland both say 'year of our Lord'. Which in Latin is Anno Domini

The movie makes references to several civilization which span a very wide time range: from 10,000 at least, to Christ era. So they should have been revisited many times by this engineers (is there no better place to go?). They are several mistakes about the civilizations in the movie. Not only the Hawaiian, but putting the cave painting in Scotland (at least as I understood), at that time an inhospitable glacial tundra. They also make the reference to Aztecs (rised to civilization well after the XIII century...), although it seems they also make reference to Teotihuacan in Mexico (a previous city with a classical period after Christ). These last two civilizations where conformed after the engineers decide to destroy us - their corpses in LV-223 were dated as 2 milenia, that is, before those mexican civilizations flourished... Plus plus plus.... were these points stars or planets? If they are stars, their configuration moves in milenia - the Big Dipper we recognize today would have been irrecognizable by our ancestors the cavemen 10,000 years ago...so they could hardly serve as markstones to us... I love the movie and the world it explores, but I guess is too vast scenario to be written by a irrelevant author...
