In Prometheus Fifield and Milburn stumble upon a pile of dead Engineers in their Bio-Suits in the East wing of the Alien Temple. Some of the Engineers show busted heads, others show busted rub cages. What could have caused this? Obviously, something got "out" in the Temple and prevented the Engineers from departing from LV_223 some 2000 years prior to the events of December, 2093. When David activated the holographic recording of the Engineers running away from something, the crew follow them to entrance of the Ampule Room where one of the Engineers perished at the foot of the door before being decapitated by it. Why were the Engineers seeking refuge in the Ampule in the first place? Where did they go? Were they eventually found in that room and dragged to where Fifield and Milburn discover their dead remains? Also, where are the beings responsible for this? Did they disappear? Or perhaps did they hijack one of the other Juggernaut Space Vessels as it was attempting to escape and this is what brings us to ALIEN? Could the original Xenomorph creation (Seen in the Mural) be the cause of this massacre? Could they have gotten on one of the ships without the Engineer knowing? Or was this something else? Could it have been a different breed of Alien? An interesting thing to note is that the way in which the Engineers were all gathered in one place and then killed (I'm assuming) mimics that of what we see in ALIENS and even a deleted scene of ALIEN - where the Xenomorphs drag their victims to a spot, near the Hive's core where they can be impregnated and the offspring born without danger. Could an Alien Hive have been created on LV_223 inside the Engineer Temple? Could a premature Queen have emerged and started reproducing and forming a Hive? If so, then what caused them to disappear? Why did Fifield and Milburn not discover Hive resin on the walls? Or any remains from the antagonists? Could the Aliens have ventured to another Temple in search of more hosts? Or did the Engineers find a way to stop them somehow? This topic contains many, many, many questions for you all to dissect and speculate over. Post your thoughts and opinions on this here! Hopefully we will get our answer when Prometheus 2 surfaces!

what happened to them ? one of the enlisted supply Grigori dropped a canister, it cracked open, and all hades broke loose. they were overcome by their own biological warfare agent and only one of the officers managed to put itself into stasis before he was infected ... the virus hadnt developed digits and/or hadnt assimilated the tech neccessary for hyperbaric chamber manipulation yet ... the rest as they say ...

Infidel, that feels like a stretch to say no Engineers went looking to see what happened to the installation, for all anyone knows they did and knew better than to even touch down. A) It was a "secret" installation known only to some....all dead....mostly. : P B ) A warning beacon was set to stay away (a signal that the Prometheus could not detect just like the one on LV-426).

When David activated the holographic recording of the Engineers running away from something, the crew follow them to entrance of the Ampule Room where one of the Engineers perished at the foot of the door before being decapitated by it. So are you saying that the "last one in is a rotten egg" engineer was falling down because he was already perishing and was dead before he hit the ground with his neck under the door? Why were the Engineers seeking refuge in the Ampule in the first place? Where did they go? Were they eventually found in that room and dragged to where Fifield and Milburn discover their dead remains? I don't know and I don't think it matters. Without detailed temple layout at our fingertips (which won't be available until we can freeze-frame the BluRay) we really don't know the layout well enough to know if the Ampule/Head room just had the one door. So, assume it has only one door. We saw no bodies (except the head) in there so it would mean they re-opened the door and exited and may or may not have become one with the heap of their dead cousins. Their remains might be somewhere else in the complex. Did something drag them out of the room to their final resting place? Who knows. [More to come] Folks!!! READ the link below. It was just posted. Explains practically EVERYTHING. "I WAS SO WRONG!!!!" LOL ; ) Major revelations regarding Prometheus and Alien!!!! (and things related to this thread) http://thewertzone.blogspot.in/2012/06/filling-blanks-tying-prometheus-to.html This at least gives us a proper base-point to start further discussions.....

After seeing the scene twice, it almost looked like he was grabbed from behind by something. Much like how the ALIEN would in the Alien movies - grab someone from behind and put a second jaw through their head. But when Shaw and Ford are examining the head on the Prometheus, there's no sign of a blunt force to the back of its head. So, ultimately I'm not sure how that Engineer died, he could have just fallen and not made the "cut" into the Ampule Room. But still it begs the question, where did the rest of those Engineers go upon safely getting into the Ampule Room? I mean, I didn't see any other doors leading out of that room.. so where could they have gone?

Could it be that the Engineers in the holographic image were running from that last Engineer, who falls and gets decapitated by the door -- because he'd been infected by the black goo and was mutating and going berserk like Fifield does later. This would account for the decapitation. The others who had escaped into the ampule room were trying to shut the door before he could get through it after them -- and they succeeded, except that he fell and his head got under the door as it was closing. As corroboration, when the Shaw and Ford are examining the severed head, they notice "cell growth" that looks like "something changing". When re-activated, the head starts deforming and explodes, which the head of a healthy Engineer would have no reason to do.

One thing that strikes me as odd is that the slaughter of the Engineers at the "military installation" (if that's what it is) happened 2,000 years ago, but in all that time apparently the Engineer home plant never sent anyone there to see what happened or reclaim the installation. They certainly should have done that, since the installation was crammed with highly dangerous biological weapons which they wouldn't have wanted to let fall into other hands. From what we've seen, the Engineers seem to be brutal, thuggish creatures. We know that they invested considerable resources into creating very dangerous weapons. Probably they're warlike. I hypothesize a broader conflict 2,000 years ago embracing the whole Engineer civilization, including the home planet -- a conflict in which a minor action was fought on LV-223 for control of the military base, as one Engineer "nation" tried to seize it from a rival "nation" which held it. That would account for the pile of corpses and perhaps the fleeing Engineers in the hologram. In this conflict the Engineer civilization destroyed itself, which would account for why no one ever came from the home planet to check up on the base. When Shaw reaches the home planet, she'll find it in ruins, uninhabited except for horrors spawned from the black goo and other super-weapons. This would also add another meaning to the line, "A king has his reign, and then he dies.' The Engineers had their reign, but they blew it, and now it's humanity's turn.

Remember that Holloway found another room from within the ampule room but he never entered it behind the xeno murial. Maybe the engineers fled to that room.

Infidel753

MemberOvomorphJun-09-2012 10:04 PM
If there's another room, behind the xeno mural, it might have led to another exit. However, I suspect that the pile of corpses is not the same group as the Engineers seen running in the hologram. The pile of corpses seems to include a larger number of individuals, for one thing.

We never saw the body outside the door. only the suit. the idea of a suit is to protect something weaker, exploding or no. also, there's no proof they didn't wait things out and return the way they came... leaving the decapitated head. And we know what happens to the head, when it was reanimated!

Infidel, that feels like a stretch to say no Engineers went looking to see what happened to the installation, for all anyone knows they did and knew better than to even touch down. A broader conflict, ugh, feels like a 'this has all happened before' mantra... Shaw might find the homeplanet in ruins or be the harbinger of doom, hard to say with little to no evidence.

Infidel753

MemberOvomorphJun-09-2012 10:29 PM
I think the decapitated body was in the suit, based on the fact that Shaw is able to stick a device in it and determine how long it's been dead.

MHM: Infidel, that feels like a stretch to say no Engineers went looking to see what happened to the installation, for all anyone knows they did and knew better than to even touch down. It's hard to imagine that they would have just left the base as it was, for someone else to potentially grab (or accidentally unleash) the bio-weapons, even if they didn't dare land. If they couldn't re-claim the base, more likely they'd have nuked the site from orbit -- as the only way to be sure:-)

Huh?

MemberOvomorphJun-09-2012 10:36 PM
I think the only reason it's in the film is that Ridley thought it would look cool and ominous. It served no purpose for the story whatsoever.

MemberOvomorphJun-09-2012 10:41 PM
Maybe, or they deemed another purpose ( allowing another group to be the test subjects or first respondents, yadda yadda... ) or maybe they were all dead or coughing up seeds somewhere else? It's a tough chew to say for reals and no foolsies...

As to why the Engineers in the hologram would flee into the ampule room with the dangerous black goo -- we don't know that the ampules, or the goo, were even in that room 2,000 years ago when that event happened. They might have been moved there later for some reason. The giant sculpted head and the murals in the room -- quite striking since otherwise the base seems devoid of decoration -- suggest that it was a temple or otherwise had some emotional significance to the Engineers. Not a place one would normally use to store weapons.

Well here is my theory. I think that installation was a science research facility. They were testing this thing they found or made and something went terribly wrong. Either one of them sabotaged the installation or a canister broke and It spread towards others making them hostile like what happened to Fifield when he went berserk mode trying to kill everyone. So the remaining Space Jockey guys killed most of them and piled there bodies up. I say piled because if they were attacked or killed by anything there bodies would be spaced apart from each other. When you see the recordings in order starting when the space Jockeys enter the room that has the mural they are holding up there. Then as you continue seeing the recording towards the end the remaining 3 enter the ships area. What happened to the others? I think this space jockey was the cause of what happened in this facility. He was the remaining survivor and probably killed the others while they were in stasis. The reason being to destroy human life.

One thing I don't get about the movie is how ALL of the ships on LV-223 got overrun by their creations. What are the odds of that happening? Maybe the goo is so unstable that this could happen, but how did every ship make the same mistake, and how were they stupid enough to be touched by the goo? I understand how general human curiosity unleashed it again, but how could these engineers be so foolish as to release it somehow on every ship.

@Antonio That second half of the last paragraph... Holy ****.... Y'know what? I was gonna post up my own theory, but after reading that. It almost seems so CLEAR! WOW! Hear me out. Allright. Basically that last Engineer was a total NUTBAG. I mean, if you think about it, why would HE, above all others, be the last one alive, and in stasis? I think he's simply an anomaly amongst the Engineers, and he's actually a sick bastard. You guys NOTICE his facial expression before tearing off David's head? Something along the lines of: "There, there... It'll be ok" ...with a motherf***ing GRIN/smile on his face. Then all of a sudden, he rips off David's cage like a psycho! Am i the only one who noticed that? lol...? I always thought the Engineers would very much be a perfect template to a "gentle giant", if you will. I honestly think that they're good folks, with good intentions. And once Shaw arrives at their home planet, they won't tear HER head off on site. I think they're quite humble. I mean, honestly. If you had such power with knowledge, would you behave in such a ridiculous way? No. -------------------------------------------------------------- Anyhow, after supporting Antonio's post, i'll say that if not that, then it was just exclusive to that GROUP of Engineers on LV-223. They could very well be considered outcasts, of a sort. Perhaps they strayed away from their people, with their own intentions. I honestly don't think that group on LV-223 does them justice. I really don't want the Engineers to simply end up being the bad guys.

An Alternative theory: The ampule room was a trap. Note that the atmosphere didn't change until one of the explorers, David, I think, seemed to depress a plate. It was after this that an electric storm fell upon the place. This is actually right out of an old Lovecraft tale, where an explorer gets trapped in a crypt due to a sandstorm. After the atmospheric disturbance begins--and comes VERY quickly--the ampules release their deadly microbes to feast upon those trapped inside for the duration of the storm. The entire room seems a lovecraftian altar... replete with a green stone. (I just posted a thread to discuss that on its own.)

There's really no way to tell. To me, the simplest answer is probably the correct one. They lost control of their weapon (black goo) and it turned on them. Maybe it was even those Cobraliens. They were exposed to the goo, mutated, and attacked the Engineers. If enough of them were exposed to the goo, why couldn't they have overtaken the Engineers? The Cobraliens entered through the mouth, ate them from the inside out, then exited however they could (burrowed through the head or chest, or simply exited from the mouth). Then they crawled off, never to be seen again. The Prometheus shows up and the same thing happens, but this time only a couple of worms are exposed. The black goo (in my opinion) seems to mutate in a specific way. Meaning, it turns life forms into Alien-esque creatures, or rather, leads them down that evolutionary line. That's why the worms had a facehugger-like head and acid blood. Which also leads me to believe that the Aliens and Deacon have existed even before the events of Prometheus. But that's my take. The black goo got out of control and mutated the life on the planet, which in turn attacked the Engineers. I guess one Engineer managed to make it to his cryo-stasis pod, or maybe he was in there the whole time. I don't know, but its all fascinating stuff.

I think that hologram showed enough to get a picture of what happened. All of them were running to the bridge/orrery room. Why were they running??? Notice the last guy who was decapitated,he was infected and we know this because they brought that engineers head back to med bay on the Prometheus and the head showed it was in the process of changing. The other engineers knew he was infected and they started running from him and they closed the door on him. At that point the rest of the engineers are in the pod room which is likely where they met their demise right in the front of the door where they were gathered up. Many of their heads were blown apart or chest exploded. The Engineer who was awoken by david likely sealed all the doors and left all his buddies to die. For all he knew they infected too or better yet he purposely infected them to see their creation at work. My question now is.....can that engineer be in cryo for 2000 years which is what they dated the decapitated engineers body at. Seems a little long even if your aging at a slower rate.

Did nobody notice the Engineer at the beginning eating a bowl of goo? He was the one who started the epidemic. Try this on. The Engineers were building bio weapons to unleash on Earth (we don't know why they hate us, that is another question entirely), that much we know since Earth was programmed in as the destination for that ship. But what if not every Engineer agreed with this agenda? What if there was a rogue element that was against the genocide of their progeny. Knowing full well it would cause untold problems, Engineer rogue eats goo, chaos ensues. Goes to support the earlier theory of a war amongst the engineers.

No, no... Man. His body metabolised into something else. DNA. That was the creation scene, at the beggining, there. It was awesome, btw :D. My second favourite part of the movie. WOW.

I can't help believe that the Engineers are at war with some other race (possible the predators) and developed the aliens as a weapon to combat them. The aliens being self-contained expansive death machines, which sole purpose is to kill and multiple? But how do you make enough of them to fight a galactic size war? Drop your DNA on life supporting planets and wait for it to evolve in alien food species, drop of some aliens and farm your army with they finish. The fact to aliens seem to be designed to use human like species for reproduction may indicate they are domestic to the engineer home world. Or a similar like being they genetically altered. Does this theory seem to off the wall? It would kind of explain the Engineers violent attack and quick desire to fly the spaceship to earth as soon as they woke him up. I mean, no bathroom break, quick snack, or hey let's look around after 2k years. He his race was losing the war; he would be desperate to get the aliens to earth to start making soldiers.

There will be a sequel. Not enough from this film to jump right into the next Alien movie. So many questions, yet so much time until we do see another film from Scott.
