MemberOvomorphJun-11-2012 2:31 AMI was thinking about this question today as debates about profitability and sequels raged over the internet as the weekend box office numbers started trickling in. The sequel talk got me reading articles and interviews and it dawned on me that Lindelof has said that he would be "open" to coming onboard and writing a sequel if he was asked. This very likely means, that the rest of the Prometheus story and, many of the plot elements left open, have not been written out yet. This puts Prometheus more into the category of standalone film with sequel potential (like Batman Begins) than the first part of a trilogy. I think this may be the thing that is confusing audiences the most about the story. It has been marketed and talked about as a standalone film with the potential for sequels and yet is clearly a film that REQUIRES a sequel to complete the story. Do you guys think that maybe if they had marketed the film as the first part of a trilogy from the start that the reception for the film may have been significantly better? I personally think that if the studio had committed to two other films from the beginning the film's rating might be in the low 90's or high 80's and the box office would be much larger. As of right now though, it seems the two other films have not been written and no director or writer for a sequel has even been hired. So as far as the general public is concerned, this is an incomplete standalone film.

MemberOvomorphJun-11-2012 2:39 AMAbsolutely if that had been the case from the onset that this was a trilogy of films with the same team on board i would feel much better about the film as it stands ... Just as i felt with the lord of the rings and any other marketed trilogy.
it goes without saying because you know that so many questions raised would be addressed . However it still doesn't account for the daft actions of these intelligent astronauts and scientists.

MemberOvomorphJun-11-2012 2:42 AMI believe it will have a sequel...or two. And I believe that the white guys could possibly be early Predator, I mean, look at the way he grabbed David, and tore his head off. Very familiar to a Predator.

MemberOvomorphJun-11-2012 2:47 AMIt has been said that Prometheus is a child that will spawn two more children. 1 linking directly to Alien and the other, with the help of #2, linking to an open-ended universe of even more children.

MemberOvomorphJun-11-2012 2:50 AMYes I hear there are supposed to be sequels, but if that ever happens? Only time will tell.

MemberOvomorphJun-11-2012 2:51 AMForget Predators - this movie does not have ANY LITTLE BIT to do twith PREDATORS. thats a whole different "movie-universe" and the AvP-Movies have nothing to do with Ridleys Aliens.

This movie is already in the black. It has recouped 110% of it's production costs in the first weekends' box office take. This typically ends up being a third of a movies total box-office so it's going to end up around $360,000,000. It cost between $120-130 million.
Sequels WILL happen!!!

MemberOvomorphJun-11-2012 2:57 AMHehe I know I know :)
But there are never any guarantees with making movies :)

MemberOvomorphJun-11-2012 3:02 AMEven if RS dies tomorrow and/or Lindelof walks in front of a bus....Fox WILL make these sequels.....
Have you heard about 10.11.12? More viral marketing.....For what, if not a teaser trailer for the sequel.

MemberOvomorphJun-11-2012 3:10 AM@ Antony the 10.11.12 viral marketing is probably for the bluray release of the film. It makes sense in terms of the time as movies that come out in June usually hit store shelves in October. And although Prometheus has recouped 110% of its PRODUCTION cost, it does not mean it will break even when the costs of the massive worldwide marketing campaign are taken into account (which could be as much if not more than the actual cost of production). Watchmen earned 55 million its opening weekend and never hit 200 million dollars worldwide.

MemberOvomorphJun-11-2012 3:13 AMLol I think the chances of the Engineers turning into Predators are the same as those of David turning into the Terminator.

MemberOvomorphJun-11-2012 3:14 AMyou know with every blue ray release there is online content these days and surprise surprise here in the uk the blue ray is advertised as being released 10. 09 12 so i'm guessing the online extras and other guff supplied with the blue ray/ dvd will tie into that date.
Actually this is a usa site date but i wouldn't be surprised if that date is out by 2 days

MemberDeaconJun-11-2012 5:41 AMI think that Ridley has the base concept of what they want to do with Prometheus 2 and 3...
I think before going to final stages of creating a script they are going to gauge how well this movie does and also any critism and positive comments...
The movie has 3 possible out comes to me....
As far as that article well regarding the end of the movie it did leave the door open for 3 out comes...
1) Follow Shaw and David and find out where they go, what they find and who they meet....
2) Follow events on LV 223, maybe Earth sends out another mission and they come across whats left behind including the potential Proto Xeno....
3) Go back into the distant past, and maybe not set entirely on Lv 223 but the Engineers home world, where we can find out more about them and maybe what really went so wrong for them around 2000 years ago....
I think Ridley could do a number 1 that would tie in with number 3, via flash back scenes and at the end could lead to another movie that ties from end of Prometheus 2 with 1/3 covered that then explores 2...
Which i think would allow a Prometheus 3 to see the Engineers that Shaw finds, head down to LV 223 to have a look at what went down, maybe destroy the out post but then on way home they pick up a unwelcome passenger.... that then finally leads us to Alien.

MemberDeaconJun-11-2012 5:45 AMI think they did the right thing in marketing the movie as a stand alone movie, even though its not because of how it is left open...
I think if it was marketed as a Trilogy then some may think well this is milking it a bit, some may think well i am not going to get any answers from one movie and skip seeing it at the box office.
some may then connect it with Star Wars Prequel Trilogy.... which i think is more close to the money..... The Star Wars Prequels was not just about how a Boy called Anakin becomes Lord Vader, there are other elements to that serries.
And by the same token the Prometheus movies are not just going to be about where the Xeno came from and how it got on LV 426 but i do think that after Prometheus 3 we should all know exactly what happened.

MemberOvomorphJun-11-2012 8:53 AMAnyone care to guess where the footage from 3 months of work in Spain is? It isn't in the film and the film's Wiki has been partially scrubbed rather concisely to omit details of what was there before release.

MemberOvomorphJun-13-2012 1:59 AMMy guess is that Fox wanted this movie to be marketed as a standalone simply because it would be next to impossible to predict what sort of reception it would get. The questions that it touches upon are profound, and potentially provocative in such a way that could spark intense attention, outrage and boycott, confusion, or any number of other reactions.
On the other hand, I think that this movie was written in such a way as to necessitate a sequel, and the writers (and Ridley Scott) put in elements that made it somewhat obvious. For instance--in Alien, the Space Jockey is found to be sitting in that gigantic navigator's seat, with his chest burst open. The ending of this movie left that situation pretty much impossible. I don't think that Ridley Scott is the sort of director that would overlook such a detail, especially when it was in one of his own films.
This is where I think they're going to go (and it's going to spark a lot of conversation): Dr. Shaw is going to find out that the reason that the Engineers decided not to eradicate mankind is because Jesus decided that they were worth saving. Jesus will somehow be related to the Engineers--perhaps even be one himself, much like the one in the opening sequence.
It will be a nightmare to write this in such a way as to be culturally sensitive, but it could be done.
You heard it here first, folks :)
