MemberOvomorphJun-14-2012 1:19 PMI'm guessing that I am not the only one who owns the Alien Quadrilogy, I mean sure, the Alien Anthology might have more to offer, better visuals, but to me it seems kind of pointless to own both, since I got this one for my birthday. Anyways. On one of the Extra Dvd's concerning Alien 3, there is this very interesting idea about one of the earlier versions of what this movie would become. Some of it remained in the actual film, but most of it didn't. It involved a wooden biosphere in space, inhabited by monks and had a more clear story on how Ripley got infected, and with this did to her psychologically. Basically there were all these monks, living as if during the middle ages, thinking the Alien was the devil running around. Sure there are parallels, but it was going to be quite different, seeing as there were no criminals involved, and also a very different kind of male supporting role along with Sigourney Weaver was intended. For me this sounds like a more interesting idea than what the movie eventually became, even though I liked Alien 3 in its own right (more so the alternate cut)

MemberOvomorphJun-15-2012 12:50 PMI'm the proud owner of the Alien Anthology box set, but I still have the Alien Quadrilogy on my wish list just because it's got a package so cool, and also as a collector's item.
I was very intrigued about the whole wooden planet notion, but really when you put it in the world of Alien it doesn't make sense, it feels too fantastic no really science fiction.
By the way, I love Alien³ in both versions, but of course I rather prefer the Assembly Cut, except for the Queen chestbursting scene.

MemberOvomorphJun-15-2012 1:03 PMIf I saw a movie with a wooden planet, I'd expect hobbits and forest creatures to be there, not monks and xenomorphs.
Sounds intriguing on the surface, but when I started to think about it, the whole idea sounded silly.

MemberOvomorphJun-19-2012 6:32 AMNiceYoungFriendlyMan, I don't own the box set but I have heard bait about this.
It does sound awesome.
I believe was in an unused screenplay written by Joss Whedon.
Is there much about it on the DVD??

MemberOvomorphJun-22-2012 5:18 AMWell guy since you went through the trouble of writing so many replies :P Nah just kidding. There is about a fifteen minute segment on there about the wooden planet. So there's quite a lot on it. They show you concept drawings, and the guy who wrote the wooden planet script goes into the details of what he had envisioned.
He was eventually replaced by a different writer, but things didn't work out. So after the initial draft of the new script, the rest of Alien 3 was pretty much unscripted. I like the movie a lot, but its painful to hear from one of the people behind the movie that he wished the assembly cut would have made it to the cinema, and even more sad when you think about what it could have been if given the right amount of time and money, I think Alien 3 could have been better than the second film.

MemberOvomorphJun-22-2012 8:33 AMFor me, anything other than what they did in Alien 3 would have been great. The series still had momentum at that time, and the way Alien 3 ruined all the characters we loved so much in the pervious films was awful and the way it ended I thought was selfish in that it made the only way to continue the same story in Alien 4 through the nightmare of a joke plot Resurection had in order to bring back Ripley.
