Do you wish the Engineer was a good guy?

Yeah so this occurred to me. I remember when I watched Independence day for the first time. When it turned out the alien could talk, and it just wanted to be evil, I was like, what, why? Same goes for Mars Attacks....but then that's a far stretch away from Prometheus I guess. Those aliens had a sense of humour, unlike mister five across the eyes there in his fancy sleeping of tomorrow. But seriously most of us must have thought for just a moment that the Engineer coming out of hyper sleep was not evil but benign. I still can't really figure out why he would fain being of good intention...then again we are supposed to come from them and humans manipulate and lie all the time so the apple might not fall far from the tree. Part of me was pretty bummed out that he acted like yet another monster, you know, kill kill. But I can't figure out a good ending to the movie if he had just buddied up to the crew, ya know, bio-mechanic par-tay in Vicker's quarters. Maybe his trust would have been betrayed by somebody along the way, perhaps even Shaw, to get back at them for killing Holloway. There were some possibilities there I guess. What do you guys think?

They weren't "kill kill" creatures, I saw them as sophisticated beings, superior in many ways, including the intelect. That engineer killed those humans after he came out of hyper-sleep because they already planned to extreminate humanity 2000 years ago for some reason.

I think that they were malevolent towards us was right: but, after everything that took place, the way that they paid off seemed just so poor - "HULK SMASH!"?.... At that moment, I couldn't help raising my eyes to the ceiling.

His violent reaction manifested itself after David spoke to him. I think that there was another thread up which translated the conversation between David and the Engineer. They were speaking in Summerian. I have always thought that he reacted violently because he noticed that David was an android, plus the fact that David was asking the Engineer if he could grant Weyland immortality. Which was a huge mistake to ask of the Engiineer. If in fact they were going to exterminate the human race 2000 years ago would of been because of human ego and selfishness. Then the request is what finally put the Engineer over the edge. I think that if Shaw would of comfronted the Engineer alone his reaction would of been different. Thats just my opinion.

@LV 223 WRECK— Yes, but should they be "evil"? @Rubibosa — Not Sumerian, but a variation of Proto-Indo-European... Not that it makes that much difference... If Janek and David are *both* correct, the last Engineer, who ripped off David's head and killed Weyland with it, is likely a member of the Engineers’ equivalent of a military. He was most recently (2000 years ago) ordered to exterminate humanity. If he is a member of their military who is just following orders, is he automatically evil? I think not. I have a cousin who flies and trains others how to fly F16s for the US Navy. He is easily the least evil person I know. The Engineers are spiritual (at least as their on-screen time was originally conceived). The nature of exactly HOW they are spiritual and the ramifications of it playing out in behavior is still quite ambiguous. I will be satisfied if they are neither good nor evil per se. If we come from them, I expect them to be very COMPLEX. The less complex they are, the less interested I will remain in this franchise. It still seems very possible to me that the one we have seen on LV-223 so far is one of the so-called "dark angels" as described by Ridley Scott. If they are designed to do inherently "dark" things, that still leaves a lot of wiggle room for the core of their civilization to be quite surprising and even beneficent. It may very well turn out that they (quite mistakenly) created an horrific evil in US, their children on Earth. How much more painful the pill will be to swallow for humanity if WE turn out to be the evil ones in the end.

We were created by the engineers for the purpose of harvesting the DNA from us . I dont think they have any emotional attachment to us at all, good or evil . Kinda like sheep to a farmer. Maybe since they f#@k up on the way to harvest us , it give us time to advance and become aware. maybe thats what upset him. oh david getting whipped......classic
"how do you feel?"-" great, next stupid question"

I do wish that the Engineer species was "good". Forget about Prometheus and think back to what you though when you saw the Space Jockey for the first time. Sitting there for who knows how long. In the dark and cold, killed while at his post in the big chair. Dying as his warning is being sent. Back then, whoever he was, he represented a fallen bearer of the warning. He might possibly have been the first victim to die- whilst the others were turned into all those eggs. Or (like the last engineer?) he was all alone with no one to help him... It bothers me terribly that what I thought was such a nice guy turns out to be a member of a mixed up species that created us for some reason and then wants to kill us for some (possibly different) reason. Not to mention that as a group, they ALL failed or were ALL defeated by whatever the heck happened on LV-223- Except of course the last engineer; who as it turns out, wasn't a pitiful hero, but instead (at best) a confused and angry individual. At worst- a military operative (no offence to F-16 instructors) hell bent on carrying out his deadly orders.

what made you think the engineers were bad? cuz they killed some precious humans? look at the world today. killers, rapists, thieves, corporate scum get a "fair trial" because they have "rights" so if we shoot one in the head, that's "evil" have you watched the matrix? the robots weren't evil, they were just systematic. do them "life" was just energy. so they never actually "killed" any humans. if you have a fly in your house, do you not swat it? maybe in the fly-colony they must be saying "why are humans so evil? i was just buzzing around near the jam, and this guy tried to swat me...why?" i don't think the engineers are "evil". my interpretation is that they just "don't care" about us. what's a few dead humans? they were gonna wipe out the human race anyway, who cares? is it evil to wipe out a race? ... we do it everyday. look at our oceans, species being wiped out everyday. i don't see anyone saying anything about it. but hitler was "evil" right?

"...... I think that if Shaw would of comfronted the Engineer alone his reaction would of been different. ...." Perhaps the entire storyline hinges on this note,, Just think what might the Engineer's reaction to the first words from any other charactors in the movie.. I would like to be there when the Engineer is asked if he wants some get 'high'.. In fact why not have a pre recorded message for such an historic(in Earth's eyes) event:meeting another being.. One element of this story ...even for a private mission..that still bothers me is a lack of security..defensive equipment..procedures..If not for the relativl;y small crew(there are always 'problems'..when humans are working together)..than the meeting of another Universe dweller.... It would like going to visit another country,,knowing they have superior,abilities..transpotation..other unknowns..and not being prepared..the best you can.

The belief in a supernatural source of evil is not necessary; men alone are quite capable of every wickedness. Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) British novelist.

@aircraftfixer You actually make a very profound point. Not long after Alien and for some time following, you will find Scott saying how everyone just assumed the guy in the chair was passive, benevolent - how it just gave that impression to everyone who saw it. How they somehow felt for him and how strange it was... How times change men.
