David's response: "I know".
My initial reaction to this interchange was that David kind of expected this would be the outcome (wonder if anybody else had that feeling?). As for Weyland, I just interpreted as there's nothing here to help me...
But I'll tell ya, if I was him at this point I would've just dumped an urn full of that black magic right over my head (assuming he had the strength to do it). Hey, wadd'ya got to lose? ;)

I didn't catch that in the movie but perhaps he's referring to a heaven after death?? He didn't strike me as a religious person.

I thought of that too, but he was still alive, so how could he know what lies beyond at this point? Unless he decided that since the Engineers weren't "Gods", there could be no afterlife

We only get one chance to to know what happens after death... ironically, that is the moment of our respective deaths. Why RS and the writer chose to tell their audience that there is nothing after death is a curious matter for me. Consciousness surving after death or the lack thereof has no relevance to what happens in the movie, or in life for that matter. It bothered me when Weyland said that in the movie as I saw no reason for it except to scare and confuse those who don't have the answer for themselves. Seemed cheap.

I disagree with this as I contend that the prime theme of the movie is to be less concerned with where we cm from and what happebns after words and make the most of life while here---and in the end--the time after that is nothing...

David did finally say to him "have a good journey, Mr. Weyland", so I disagree that RS and DL were ultimately implying there is no afterlife

Weyland's final words before he dies: "There's nothing"
David's response: "I know".
That exchange is a writer's bookend or mirror to the following quote of David from Lawrence Of Arabia meant to balance the story on the whole: "There is nothing in the desert and no man needs nothing."
"There's nothing"...."I know".
"There is nothing in the desert and no man needs nothing."
It is, also, an insinuation of no afterlife; Weyland's life is fading and he sees no white light, no firey pit to hell...just nothing.

Jim100a100........I would say that the "have a good journey, Mr. Weyland" line is another example of David's rebellious sarcasm......I think it's a clear insinuation of no after;ife, particularly in light of the discoveries they've made....
And the Lawrence Of Arabia thought was not mine, but a friend's, I must admit.

hmm, nice one craigamore. didn't think of linking this dialogue up to David's LoA quote..
edit: it's ok, just say you thought of it ;)
Re: David's Journey quote - I saw it as a comforting (dare I say one of the movie's few genuinely touching?) gesture toward his "Father" in his final moment

Nice, craigamore!
I had taken it as resignation in finally facing his own mortality.......no more cards left to play.

Weyland was a nonbeliever, that is why he kept prolonging the inevitable. The "A king has his reign" speech. But David never dies, and has the luxury to be sarcastic. There's some cool information here at this site about David: http://www.weylandindustries.com/ Shaw came to a different conclusion, that is why she demanded to get her cross back.

David also said something like, "Have a good journey." indicating he though "nothing" was a place to go to.
Strange.
