As good as this movie is, I was wondering if it'd even beat Battleship in the money rankings.

That's awesome! Thanks for the good news!

Yea but it is a 72% drop from last Friday. PROMETHEUS would finally earn around $125-130 million, just like SUPER 8. Tough decision for Fox to continue with the sequel. International numbers have to be very good to spectacular to make them commit. The overseas rollout is too gradual. Germany is getting it Late July/August I think

It almost kills me to know, that Madagascar overtook Prometheus. Even though it's not surprising, but it's just so stupid. In many ways.

EGR101: In regards to the German release date you need to take into consideration the following facts: (1) the month long 2012 UEFA European Soccer Championships, which takes place every 4 years, is in currently progress; (2) the competition runs until July 1st; (3) the German national team is one of the favorites to win the cup (knock on wood). I have no doubt that that fact played a role in the German release date for the film. In fact, one of the recent articles that I read about the international box office receipts for "Prometheus" even mentions the impact that the European Championships most likely had on ticket sales for the film during the first 2 weeks of June.
Ruth: (1) “Prometheus” is rated R, which put a limit of who could buy tickets. (2) How many teens under 18 do you think are jonesing to see “Prometheus”? (3) “Madagascar” is aimed at kids. It’s summertime in the northern hemisphere and antsy kids who are amped up on sugar and who have been spoon fed commercial propaganda about “Madagascar” will tell their parents to take them to the film, which the parents will more than likely do or they will suffer the wrath of their angry spawn. (3) How many of those parents do you think were bumming that they couldn’t go see an adult oriented sci-fi epic?
All that anyone who is above 18 has to do to see “Prometheus” is plunk down their money and buy a ticket to the film and hopefully convince at least one other geek to go see the film with them so that they can talk about the film after the screening is over.
“Prometheus” is flawed as all hell but I’ve already seen it twice, have bought the art book and I'm going to go see the film for a 3rd time sometime this coming week. Hell, I’m not even a fanboy. In terms of summer genre films “The Avengers” was fun but forgettable and “Snow White” was fluffy eye candy. Each day I appreciate more so the work that was put into “Prometheus”. It’s not a classic but IMHO it’s by far the best thing that’s been done in the genre in a long time.

Prometheus may have racked up a 250- 320 million dollar bill with its production budget and marketing campaign, the fact that it is rated R or the quality of the film will have no significance when it comes to the sequel. The film will either turn a profit or it won't. No profit no sequel, at the end of the day the movie business is still just another business.

Right on, Synthetic!! Very well put!!
I think the film will continue to hold steady here for a week or so, but I think the foreign markets -- particularly Europe and Japan -- will put it over the top and seal the deal for the sequel. I think the only films that will knock Prometheus out of the number two spot will be genre films. Not sure when The Hobbit, Spiderman, and Batman come out...but I suspect these will be the next "blockbusters" to arrive...When the first of these arrive, it will be over for Prometheus in the US. It will fall to at least #3 at that point.
Until then, I don't see anything else knocking it down.

Anyone know how long it'll run in theaters? I'm hoping at least another couple of weeks in the Bay Area...

kinslyayer & hudson: Thanks!
Well, the still incomplete numbers for this weekend's box office results show that in the 10 days that "Prometheus" has been playing in the US the film has basically made $89 million. The international is basically $129 million. That's a total of $218 million with other markets yet to receive the film. BTW, the above mentioned international numbers do not include the figures for 4 markets (Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico) in which the film seems to have opened in recent days.

The following are the nations and release dates where the film has yet to open.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1446714/releaseinfo
Cambodia 21 June 2012
Vietnam 22 June 2012
Poland 20 July 2012
Austria 8 August 2012
Germany 9 August 2012
Switzerland 9 August 2012 (German speaking region)
Spain 10 August 2012
Japan 24 August 2012
Italy 19 October 2012
Switzerland 19 October 2012 (Italian speaking region)
Oddly (or perhaps not oddly) enough, "Prometheus" will not be screening in mainland China.
I'm not going to make any big/solid projections for the future box office take for the film but it’s safe to say that “Prometheus” looks more than likely make back its budget and marketing costs and probably bring in a profit well before it makes its way to both DVD/Blue Ray and physical and virtual On Demand services. As far as box office competition goes the only genre film that is on the immediate horizon that will impact “Prometheus” in terms of box office take is “Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Slayer”, which will be released in the US on Friday June 22, 2012.
Okay, my apologies for any typos or errors. It’s been a long weekend at work and I’m burnt. Goodnight!
