MemberOvomorphJun-16-2012 4:33 PMPrometheus was an amzing piece of scince fiction movie, compared to many other films of that genre.
Nice shots, nice creatures, everything looks very fine, love the astronaut suits retro style, liked Fassbender as the robot and Rapace as the "new" Ripley.
So far so good!
The problem of prometheus to me is, that it leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth when you leave the cinema.
Alien also had some major not-answered questions, like who the hell is this guy in the chair, what happened to him, what was the purpose of his voyage etc. But Alien had a very believable crew and was a superb horror-sci-fi plot which freezed your blood in your venes.
Prometheus to me does not have anything of this.
The set was way to "clean", i loved that "dirt" in Alien.
It felt much more real.
The crew was not sympathic to me, i did not give a shit when one after the other died. Boring.
I did not feel any horror in any of the scenes. I dont know why, as it was done really nice, but it simply did not deliver the thrill-factor i expected.
I think Prometheus even does not want to be seen as a horror-sci-fi movie, but somekind of intelligent philosophic plot for so called "thinkers".
But there is way to much to think about it, you never come to an end.
Way to many open questions, and thats not funny and does not deliver the satisfaction you would expect.
But anyway- though there are major things that are simply not answered, it could have been a nice mystery-horror-thriller - but it isn't!
Plus, i dont like the script at all.
To many scenes where i thought - what the fuck...
Everthing goes so fast, no time for audience, no time for the crew.
Even the creatures have to hurry up as everything goes that fast!
The crew introduces itself when they arrived, and nobody knows the purpose of the mission - stupid.
Ms. Vickers seems to be somekind of manager of the project - but nobody of the crew is interested and everyone "manages" by random his personal actions - stupid.
David infects Holloway just for his personal curiosity or because of his interpretation of Weylands orders. Ehh - why didnt they use some pets for testing, was it necessary to test on a human scientist - stupid.
Nobody seems to be very exciting about their findings on the planet, it felt like they are bored and they are happy when the day is over, and hey, we talk about scientists - stupid.
Scientists incl. world best geologist lost in a cave which is mapped by high-tech equipment - stupid.
2 Scientists have to stay over night in the cave of aliens - and all the crew goes to bed or do some sex - stupid.
At the end an prototype of xenomorph comes out of the engineer - stupid.
Squids and big Squids - stupid.
All major questions are left open, except you are willing to do some puzzle , which could lead you to wrong conclusions, no matter how long you discuss and think about it - stupid. I hate that.
It does not deliver and fools the audience.
All in all disappointing.
I dont know what i expected, but when seeing Trailer 1 i felt in love with prometheus. But then in the wedding night, the beautifull bride turned out to be a plastic doll.

But all in all I have to agree. A lot of oddities with the script. Plus a bonus of bad writing for everyone.

I got that after my first viewing too.

Unexplained origins, which don't contradict anything, are a mystery though, not a plot hole. And Alien went fairly straight on from where the crew got the message in a credible way, that didn't require a lot of interpretation.

Ah, but were your expectations justified? Was it not repeatedly billed as 'not an Alien prequel, but simply taking place in that universe' ?
I think my expectations were off, despite trying to view it as a stand lone, film, it's hard not to be biased by Alien and Aliens.
Also, I think the marketing set us up for some other false assumtions, just to lure us into a trap.
And what's wrong with so-called thinkers anyway? What's with the anti- intellectual angle?
Was it unthinking consumers that got manking to the moon? I think not.
Ms. Vickers seems to be somekind of manager of the project - but nobody of the crew is interested and everyone "manages" by random his personal actions - stupid.
While plenty of people in the audience saw her as manager. I don't think ANYBODY on screen did. Her father states that Shaw and Holloway are in charge, and the Captain is obviously an authority figure. The only person who 'appoints' Vickers an authority is Vickers, and look at how everyone ignores her, until she has to enforce her will with a flamethrower.
David infects Holloway just for his personal curiosity or because of his interpretation of Weylands orders. Ehh - why didnt they use some pets for testing, was it necessary to test on a human scientist - stupid.
If the point was to see whether an elixir of eternal life for humans was around, for a trillionaire with days to live?
Nobody seems to be very exciting about their findings on the planet, it felt like they are bored and they are happy when the day is over, and hey, we talk about scientists - stupid.
I have to agree with you there. Everyone except the android is a complete idiot.
Scientists incl. world best geologist lost in a cave which is mapped by high-tech equipment - stupid.
They do stretch it a bit too far with the 'hysterical freaked out geologist' loses ability to navigate angle. But why do you assume, that a quickly assembled, private mission where they do not advertise what the objective is and ask people to get on board for 5 years round trip ''need to know" will get the best, rather than greediest or more foolhardy scientists?
There's a reason why the small squid becomes a big one. It's a bit of a dark joke. If you count up where the 17 crew end up, and notice the blood on the walls... it would seem that the two orderlies/security working in Weylands lifeboat wandered into the MedPod with Shaws 'offspring' and meet a grisly death. I agree, a bit odd to have a joke that only some of the audience will even notice is being told.

Depends on what you want out of it. I certainly find it odd for a big movie with big audience to do that, rather than a niche market film, but then again, apparently LOST was a huge hit on TV, so there's a market for that type of storywriting.
I certainly have no problem with what you took from the film. I just wanted to show that there is an alternative view (and that's kind of the central message of the film isn't it - don't just choose to believe. )

MemberOvomorphJun-17-2012 3:05 AMSure, we can sell this as an alternative variation of story telling by putting there lots of metapors, hints etc in it.
But thats a variation that i simply dont like.
With little addings the plot would feel much more believable.
Its nice that scott/lindelof/spaith wrote a story for an intelligent audience - but we are not all einsteins and dont want to use our einsteinerism (IF we have it..) to be able to follow a sci-fi plot.
Some (but i think the very minor part of the audience) will recognise these hints (most will not), like that its christmas when they arrive, 2000 years ago tried to kill mankind etc what leads to Jesus (possible - possible just a wrong path, who the hell knows?)
Maybe, maybe not.
There is some point where you loose interest in solving the puzzle when you find out that it can not be solved completely, as some puzzle parts missed. And i dont like the strategy to do a sequel, just to explain the wicknesses of the prequel.
Thats simply nuts and i will not follow to play that game.

MemberOvomorphJun-17-2012 5:59 AMyep good review.
the biggest point i think is what kind of movie it wants to be. Is it deep philisophical or sci-fi or horror? it tries to be all but fails to be any.
i really liked lost tv show but thats a weekly tv series this is a movie. It needs to stand alone and make sense too many unanswered questions leave me unsatisfied.

MemberOvomorphJun-17-2012 7:40 AMyeah.. I agree most of that part..
There is so much things unanswered and left blank on the Prometheus..
What is the reason that the earth is targeted for battle? or wipe-out for life with bio-mass-destruction?
Do they battle or on-war with some other species?
Do they simply choose the Solar System and planet Earth for "Battleground"?
They simply have the power to destroy Humanity without using their Bio-Weapons.. (without using Black Goo, Urn Silos, and Xenophorm)
Why they want to bring all their massive powers for Earth?
What is the ball like Ship on the opening?.. (Clearly it is not the Derelict-Ship that we know)

MemberOvomorphJun-17-2012 11:44 AMWell, if someone likes or does not like so much a movie is most a question of the feelings that the movie releases on the audience.
We can now analyze for weeks and find answer-hints here and there, compare with some mythology stuff, blah blubb blomm...
So maybe we can come to the conclusion - oh, wasnt bad at all!
Well, it wasn't bad at all, but as many people talk about the same "problems" with some aspects of the movie, that could also be simply accepted.
My strongest feeling about prometheus was - unsatisfied.
An that feeling of beeing unsatisfied is so strong that it may become hard to be willing to follow the series when Damon Lindelof writes the script of sequels. He fooled audience to often and i simply dont want to waste time on his pseudo-intellectuel riddles...

MemberOvomorphJun-17-2012 11:54 AM@lindelost yeah I agree, at the end of the day I just did not enjoy watching Prometheus like I did Alien or Aliens. The script was just bad and it reminded me of a video game adaptation like Resident Evil. It had that sort of cheap quality to it, where the scope of the story is actually really small as it takes you to a small cave on a mostly deserted Alien world. It was not something wonderous and epic like Avatar or John Carter of Mars.

MemberOvomorphJun-17-2012 12:09 PMYo dude, and i am afraid, on the 2nd part of prometheus it will go on the same way of frustrating storytelling.
Some nice pictures of an unknown world and culture, maybe also just some buildings / skyline of alien environment/towns.
Mysterious hints here, metaphors there, some phylosophical blah, unbelievable characters, CGI monsters coming and going (yawning..).
Maybe even Ms. Vickers comes back to life to annoy audience again..
Who the hell knows what disappointment is waiting for us, there at the darkest corners of the lindelost-universes..
Ahh, but lets see in prometheus 3 (maybe 2016?) - THERE you will get it all! Yeah - but the answer at the all end may be - everybody can come to its own conclusions, the movie will not deliver, its signed by Lindelost.

MemberOvomorphJun-17-2012 1:18 PMlol lindelost you could well be right.
how are they going to do part 2? will shaw run around with davids head in a bag?
personally i think the next 2 movies will be "the search for Shaw" . A new mission will be sent to find her then eventually in part 3 we will find her as the queen of the space jockeys with david as her side kick. : )

Mongoosemcqueen
MemberOvomorphJun-17-2012 1:22 PM@lindelost, I think there's a doubly whammy of disappointment from viewers of Lost who were also led up the garden path for nothing already. Its obvious the same tricks are being played here :(

Nuck Chorris
MemberOvomorphJun-17-2012 1:22 PMWell i think chuck norris will kill them all with his ROUND-HOUSE-KICK at once, so it may be a shortfilm in 4D!
Then there will be no need for answers, as chuck norris EVEN DOESN'T ASK ANY QUESTIONS AT ALL! Hehe.

MemberOvomorphJun-17-2012 1:47 PM@Drakeequation who wrote...
@Spartacus yeah we get it, you love Prometheus.
My affection for this film has nothing what so ever to do with the fact that the ending of each of the other 4 Alien Franchise films was FAR WORSE than ANYTHING in this one!!!
So...I guess...No, You Don't Get It !

Nuck Chorris
MemberOvomorphJun-20-2012 9:29 AMWell, i even liked Alien Resurrection more then prometheus... still love to see it from time to time. I am fed up with prometheus, 3 times watching is enough - to me.
