Noticing that Fifield [i]is[/i] smoking, he queries exactly [i]what[/i] Fifield is, obviously, smoking. Fifield confirms he is smoking hash - indirectly, by way of his comment and knowing look to do with "tobacco": big winke, big laffs. Milburn expresses a playful disdain for that kind of behaviour, in the manner of a Great Aunt Maude, etc, etc. Surely the most rational conclusion from that, is that Milburn is [i]not[/i] smoking hash? What's yet more amusing is that during the encounter with that damned snake, Fifield - the one Character we observe who [i]has[/i] obviously been smoking - is the one character who acts like he still possess full sense in his head.
