People keep saying pot, but I heard tobacco. Is there different versions of what is said depending on where you see the film? That is, tobacco in the U.S. and pot in Europe?

M -Is that tobacco?
F- Huh?
M- Is that tobacco in your respirator?
F- Yeah. Sure. Tobacco.
M -On behalf of scientists everywhere, I am ashamed to count you amongst us, Fifield, really.
He's clearly being sarcastic, and is hotboxing the weed.

TokyokidJuly 01, 2012
There is certainly a bong sound going on, and I know what I would rather be smoking.
Maybe I missed connecting the rhetorical "yeah" and the bong going off. Funny scene though.

in that situation i would be drinking and smoking pot simultaneously...one thing i would not do is pet the mutated earthworm...i would probably run my ass off at the mere sight of it.....!...i cannot even stand the sight of a normal worm...i have an intense fobia of worms!....

JuxtaposeJuly 01, 2012
I think Milburn wanted to show of in front of Fifield....look look how fearless i am dude!....that unfortunately backfired a bit...at least Fifield was high before his demise!

You don't think Milburn and Fifield are high when they see the space-cobra?
Here's the dialogue. Tell me they're not stoned.
F- Hey, Millburn?
M- Yeah?
F- You see this thing? What’d you think this thing was? Some kind of a God? Something they worshipped?
M- I don’t know. Kinda looks like a-
F- What’s that?! What the hell is that?!
M- Whoa! Okay. Just stay calm. Stay quiet.
F -What is that?
M-This is okay. I can handle this. Hey, baby. Hey. Uh- come in, Prometheus. We have an elongated reptile type creature. Maybe 30-40 inches. With transparent skin. It’s beautiful. Okay. Woowhoo! Prometheus, we have two! Look at you. Look at you, baby.
F- Jesus! Look at the size at that! What is it?!
M- You need to stay calm!
F- What’s there to be calm about?
M-You need to stay calm, because she is beautiful.
F-She? What the hell makes you think that’s female?
M-Because she’s a lady. Look. Ah. Hey. She’s mesmerized.
Come here. It’s okay. It’s okay. Hey, baby. Ohh! You’re strong!
Maybe you should help me now!
Get it off, man! Ahh! Cut it off!
F- I ain’t touching that!
Oh yeah! It’s getting tighter!
F- I ain’t touching it!
M- Touch the thing, man! For God’s sake! Oh, god! You’re making it worse! Ah! It’s tightening! It’s tightening! It’s breaking my arm! Ahh!!
Oh shit!
Cut it off! Cut it off!
AHH!! It’s in my suit! It’s in my suit!
You wanna tell me those guys aren't high?

@Hadley's Hope
...?...
How on Earth do you make Milburn, "high"?
We observe that Milburn not smoking.
Noticing that Fifield is smoking, he queries exactly what Fifield is, obviously, smoking.
Fifield confirms he is smoking hash - indirectly, by way of his comment and knowing look to do with "tobacco": big winke, big laffs.
Milburn expresses a playful disdain for that kind of behaviour, in the manner of a Great Aunt Maude, etc, etc.
Surely the most rational conclusion from that, is that Milburn is not smoking hash?
What's yet more amusing is that during the encounter with that damned snake, Fifield - the one Character we observe who has obviously been smoking - is the one character who acts like he still possess full sense in his head.

The D.A.R.E. program should show a picture of mutated Fifield to scare kids away from weed. This is what happens when u smoke weed. Theres potential for a great commercial.
Hadley's HopeJuly 01, 2012
@allinamberclad
How to make Milburn high? That's not tricky. Put him in a strange place where he's scared with a guy who has weed. He will share it with him, as they have little choice but to bond and chill out.
It happens off screen between camera shots. In one shot Milburn is giving the fake disdain, as you say, and they flip each other the bird.
Next shot, is not the next second. And now the Geologist IS interested in the place... and Milburn is no longer scared of alien life.
This is Ridley Scott screwing with us again. doing things off camera, leaving us nothing conclusive, he doesn't show the weed being shared. He implies it.
The things that seem most obvious in this film are often not the case.
Both of them are acting stoned. The geologist is freaked out by animals (fair enough, rocks tend not to bite) and the biologist is mesmerised by the snake, which he thinks is mesmerised by him.
All the religious people are thinking that the snake has demonic powers to tempt him and kill him (Exoduc, Numbers, Leviticus 21:20 all that crap I just about remember from 15 years of Catholic school)
But it seems Milburn is a bit too mellow to realise he's in trouble. Perhaps he thought his suit was snake proof.

allinambercladJuly 01, 2012
@Hadley's Hope
But, what are you saying? "It happens off-screen, between shots"?
There is no indication, at all, that it does happen.
"At all", seems quite significant, I'd say. We wouldn't have to see the sequence play out, but to not give any indication, at all, that what you suggest took place would be taking raggedy film-making to another level, even for this flick.
By the token you give, they could have swapped underwear too - or anything else I may be pleased to make up in my head - and I could vigorously support it by simply saying it was likely to have happened off-screen, between shots - with no other indication given, on-screen, at all.
"Bond and chill"?
So, they removed their helmets to share hash, then put them back on again?..
I think perhaps, they did not.
Hadley's HopeJuly 01, 2012
@allinamberclad
Why would they have to remove their helmets? The weed is being hotboxed through the respirator. It's not IN the helmets.
There IS an indication that it happened, because Milburn acts like he's stoned.
And there's plenty of things that happen off screen in this film.
2 people DIE off screen, and we don't even see their bodies.
There's the distinct possibility that David and the Engineer have a second conversation off screen.
Vickers and Janek - I know a lot of people would have preferred that to be onscreen, Idris Elba probably being one of them.
Fifield's transformation happens off screen, did he 'die' and become a zombie or mutate? Opinions differ.
We can't say vigorously support them as undeniable fact. Such things are very thin on the ground in this film (deliberately so).
We can say certain things are plausible, possible, probable. Scott wants us 'choosing' what we believe about this film perhaps.
Hadley's HopeJuly 01, 2012
@KingMe.
You can argue high, but you can't prove it conclusively, that's what's so frustrating about this film.
You take two guys who were crapping their pants at DEAD aliens, and now one of them is all chilled and mellow, and making friendly with a space cobra? Weed in the room... camera cut... I think I can argue that some time passed between camera angles (sneaky trick, but is it trickier than the subliminal suggestion used in Scene 2 that most people seem to have missed?)
A great many things are taken on 'faith' (including the whole 'they made us' and 'they were going to wipe us out' bits of the plot - no actual 1st hand proof beyond reasonable doubt for any of it.)
KingMeJuly 01, 2012
IDK i agree with allinamberclad. The line that does it for me is when Milburn says to Fifield something of the sort ' I am ashamed to count u amongst us'. This clearly shows Milburn doesnt smoke and is joking ab Fifield actually being a scientist when it shows him smoking. If he doesnt smoke on Earth why would he smoke on a distant planet?
Hadley's HopeJuly 01, 2012
Are you kidding me? what better time to start?
And he's not seriously arguing with him about smoking. They flip each other the bird in that kind of macho, insulting but not personal way.
And the cut occurs just AFTER they are facing each other flipping the bird.
Here you have two guys trapped by a storm, stuck in some cave, 327 trillion kilomotres from home, no X-box, no beer, no internet... and one of them has weed. What do you THINK Milburn is going to do? He's stressed and bored and has been scared $hitless by that pile of bodies. You think he won't take a hit?

Lol..... Finally I realized why they were so acting like idiots... :) pot Man pot..... The hapier astronaut ever.... I want that suit ^^

KingMeJuly 01, 2012
@HH :I thought u might try and argue that, but no i dont think he would take a hit. High Fifield freaks and doesnt want to go near the hammerpede. Unhigh Milburn tries to use his skiils as a biologist to investigate the creature. Nobody high on weed is fuckin with a snake worm monster on a distant planet. High Fifield doesnt even wanna touch it. Ima just start callin him Highfield.
Hadley's HopeJuly 01, 2012
@ ForeverWar,
Yeah, I'm suggesting Mr. Fifileld was being insincere in his answer, and that his brain is gently toasted in that helmet and that Milbrun joins in big time when offered the chance.
