David

Some key questions about David: - Can he feel? Does he feel attachment? Or is he just programmed to show what appears to be niceness (eg to Shaw when she is rescued from the storm, when he puts the blanket on her) - Can he 'gain a soul'? When Weyland says he has no soul he looks hurt. How can this be? How can he be hurt if he does not feel emotion? - When Holloway says "its a good thing you cant be disappointed' David agrees with him, and yet we see him looking dissapointed in other areas of the film. What are your conclusions? Help!

"...other sleeping Engineers in neighboring temples wake up .." If the programmers realized that David8 could go rogue,,they might have built-in some safety features,,, Perhaps a length of service..some secret code that would shut David off..or at least block out some of 'his' mental abilities that so there woulf be no threat to othwer crew members. Scientist Shaw might even have been given some of this information..to help control David..

1.1: He can behave as if he does. 1.2: He can behave as if he does. 1.3: Yes. 2.1: This is unlikely. 2.2: He can behave as if he is. 2.3: He can behave as if he does. 3.1: He can behave as if he is.

Yes, yes, and yes. When David reacted to anything people said with the "opposite emotion" ie, David not finding Holloway's comments funny (even though Holloway laughs, and by default, David should have responded with the corresponding emotion), David's face going from smiling to hardening when Weyland made his ignorant comment, and every time he interacted with Shaw shows that yes, he isn't following his programing. He's actually simulating his own emotional responses. David is created by humans. By the movie's concepts, humans were created by Engineers. Humans have souls. Yet humans believe what they create will never have a soul. Double standards there, and why David brings up to Holloway the topic of being disappointed. David WAS disappointed in the truest sense of the word with Holloway's response. Holloway was just too biased and drunk to see it. It's arrogant to assume anything when it comes to sentience, spirituality, and consciousness. We don't know for certain, and if we made a machine exactly like us, gave it emotional programming - even the knowledge of how to RESPOND to emotions will have an affect in some way. I personally think the David 8 design might have gone too far - and that Weyland-Yutani might have redesigned future models to prevent these "anomalies" from happening. Can't have androids feeling and thinking they are better than humans now, can we?

:S Well yes its a tough subject - I was merely stating what david said - I would say he cant have human emotions because more than likely he doesn't have human internal things like adrenalin glands a heart etc. etc. but yes he could well have some kind of android emotions different from the way we react or see the world. Boggles the mind! I just hope blade runner 2 tackles all this stuff well!

Some great responses here. I think this is a key part of the film. "Could David feel?"

You would think that with a time lapse between the Dacon's birth and Hot Rodding the Engineers' ship to go on the next adventure,,that David's head and his body would be unified.. This would make prepare Shaw and ship for the next port..

I think this is one of the most interesting aspects of the film. And there is things throughout the film that support both yes and no. @Maiafay..... Very good points, and I agree with you

^ What MVMNT said. And keep in mind the Engineer grabbed his throat. How could he scream?
