Alien: Earth and Alien: Romulus sequel news

the BEST review of Prometheus IMO

Wow this guy really hits the nail on the head IMHO. I think he without a doubt, answered the big ideas of the movie, and also gave a good answer behind the David quotes that where place throughout. Without bringing in all the confusing aspect of the Prometheus myth, which I really think was just played in the background of this movie. Think about it, Weyland wanted to approach our "Gods" to steal their fire, and was punished for it in the end. I personally think that is basically all there is to that, which would be the "trick" the movie plays on us. What better way to make you keep thinking that there is more to the Prometheus myth, than to name the damn movie after a TRICKSTER titan of mythology??? Anyway on with the review, it's from moviefone.com and by a guy (I'm guessing a columnist) named Christopher Capbell. So all the credit goes directly to him. Thanks to @ Tokyokid THIS Is my new very favorite review, and I have a strong feeling that I won't be changing my mind any time soon, if EVER. So I strongly suggest everyone read this if they want to get the most in depth review BY FAR! IMO....of course :)

I didn't read the whole thing. I got as far as... "...serves no purpose other than to be a parlour game or exercise in thinking. Some of you may enjoy this sort of puzzle even if there is no definitive solution, and some of you may be frustrated at the absence of vital pieces and an ultimate inconclusiveness (which sounds to me like life itself)." That was all I needed to read. I don't agree that the film "hurt like burning your fingers" but the guy seems to hit the nail on the head as far as why some love it and some hate it. I've always found questions much more interesting than answers. The answers, much like David says to Shaw about the reason the Engineers want to destroy us, are irrelivant. That said, I will love a sequel and getting some answers but I can be perfectly happy with the way Prometheus stands as of now if there aren't any sequels.

All I'm saying is I think he explained it. Everybody can be their own judge on if these answers persuade them to like the movie or not, but at least they make sense, from a reviewers perspective, and in the sense of a director and writing teams perspective. Please nobody make this post seem like me trying to get you to love the movie, I'll just say again, it only explains it perfectly IN MY OWN OPINION, and I'm still not sure how I feel about where this movie stands in my order of favorites....

I didn't get the feeling anyone was trying to make it seem like you're trying to get someone to love the movie. I know I didn't say anything that came remotely close to anything like that. You posted a good review of the film with points you agree with. Nothing wrong with that. And there's nothing wrong with trying to get people to change their minds about the film. The world would be very dull if someone had an idea and that idea never changed or morphed or grew into something different. Personally, I beg for people to change my mind about things. It's called being open minded and it's a good thing. IMO lol.

I've been intrigued by the Lawrence phrase of 'not minding it hurts' in the context of 'Prometheus' since the TED viral and this review just about elevates that rumination to giddy new heights of wonder. Thanks deftones.

I'm not being negative in any way towards what you said @ Engineering, you can trust me 100% on that one. I was just making that statement for anybody else who might (s)troll along this discussion (hint, hint) :)

I've read more and it is a very good take on the film. A lot of it has been said. I liked the part where the reviewer talked about his wife giving birth and "not minding that it hurts." I also agree with his half-assumption that Vickers is an android. She is. I'm sure of it. Not really but yes really lol. The idea about Weyland being sterile and David infecting Holloway so he can then infect Shaw in order to somehow find a cure for his infertility is interesting but I think it's reaching like stretch armstrong. Perhaps the reviewer's wife's pregnancy is on his mind a little too much.

Killer review, deftones, thank you for posting it. @ Engineering, if you have not yet read it through you should give it a chance, there's some great perspective in it! And I hear ya, I'm on a crusade to ramp up the positivity via sheer volume as we speak. I know there's one mind I'd LOVE to change, ha ha

Personally I think the whole entire thing about Peter Weyland saying about David that "He is the closest thing to a son I'll ever have." Is not about him being sterile, because the guy is a trazillionare CEO and surely in this timeline, and due to his stature in the world, he could have easily genetically created a son: I personally think this line was in the movie to trick us, and tug at our heart strings and make us forget about the evil corporation we're dealing with here. Why would the all powerful Weyland want to create an android "son", why would he want to live forever? My thought, is that he never wants an heir to his throne, which a real son would (in his worst dreams) become. What would make Weyland extremely paranoid? The thought of his own flesh and blood son, and bearer of his last name, growing up to out do his old man!! I think some people need to remember that the recurring theme in the Alien universe is that "the company" or in this case WEYLAND is the bad guy, the evil one, but this just gets lost in the fold by the filmakers trickery. We are made to believe that a rich, all powerful man seeking to become GOD among men, would be okay with a son being birthed from his semen, with the chance to outshine his father? I think not! Which is my interpretation of the meaning behind that line..kind makes sense doesn't it? I've had this thought on my mind for a little while now but I wasn't sure if I should create a thread about it, but I guess it will do good to sit in this discussion for now...

I think Weyland's "son" line is all about Vickers. I think it sets up the relationship that will be shown in the sequel and is there to show the stress that exists in the triangle that is the Weyland "family".

"As for Meredith Vickers (Charlize Theron), the Weyland Corp. representative who is seemingly revealed to be his daughter, she is either also an android, perhaps one unaware of being such (similar to characters in Scott’s “Blade Runner”), or a stepchild, hence the different surname." can think of 3 other scenarios where Vickers wouldn't be called Weyland: 1 - she is his daughter but her mother put her name insted of her father's name 2 - She is his daughter from an extra-marriage affair, wich either Weyland or her mother wouldn't want to put Weyland as her name 3 - she changed her name... maybe because she didn't like it... or because of a certain feud between her and her daddy, wich is blatant in the flick. just saying...

@Major Noob...All good. That's what I figured. I just wanted to point out that I did go back and read it and that I agreed that it was a good, well thought out review.
@Crabfart The trick is NOT MINDING that it hurt.
Didn't have to mind as it didn't hurt for me.

@David 1...Well noted but the theories he presented make perfect sense as well, right? In fact, I never thought of any of the reviewer's theories and had always thought the theories that you presented. After reading this review I like his ideas much better than my own.

@ David1 You left out another thing that might explainVickers, which I think is the best explanation: Vickers was born a Man. Her original name was David and then she had a sex change, which must have pissed Weyland to no end. This explains why the med pod in her room is only calibrated for men, why she is strong and tall as well as they way she talks.
