Sinking Feeling Regarding A Sequel…

I came across an article on Screen Crush from last month that I don't think has been posted here before: Prometheus 2: What’s Going to Happen in the Sequel? After reading it my heart sank a bit. This bit at the end seems to ring true, especially in the world outside of this wonderful forum: "Even though it only opened in second place, ‘Prometheus’ is being called a box office success, but if word of mouth is spun towards the frustration of being left with so many unanswered questions rather than the fun of trying to put together an unsolvable puzzle, it might not actually warrant a sequel." That and the fact that the last scene had the protagonist flying off to find an answer to a question that may be best answered in the imagination of the audience is starting to give me some worry.

Oh i dont worry. What i learned from prometheus - the less you expect, the less you can be disappointed. But to prevent disappointment does not mean to receive satisfaction... unfortunatelly. I dont care if they do sequel or not, i dont expect any good, after that...

Well we shall see...there may be more to all this something is happening later this year possibly tv series or a small chance of part 2 who knows. I think theres still hope for a future sequel though that may depend on dvd sales and the rest of what happens this year...

yup. Ever since june 8th i have been deeply concerned about the prospects of getting a sequel (I personally love the film, but knew immediately quite a few would be furious with it). Without a doubt, i believe prometheus was designed to be the catalyst for more films. However, Scott and co. made it clear from the beginning that any sequels will depend largely upon whether or not the audience likes prometheus (lindelof and scott both pretty much publicy stated: "we've got more for you. let us know (by ticket sales and reviews etc) if you like prometheus and we'll make more". I think quite a few people really like the film, but those who dislike the film have been very passionate with their hate. Look at the current landscape: Scott hasnt addressed prometheus at all since the film was released (at least not in any meaningful/indepth way). Lindelof is basically tucking his tail between his legs and, because he doesnt seem to have alot of self-confidence (or is just resigned to the fact that he is to be the designated whipping boy), totally accepting blame for "ruining" the movie. Spaihts is deferring to lindelof every chance he gets. It seems like everyone is running from the film as fast as they can. I think this is utter bullshit! They need to stand by their work. Yes there is some loud criticism, but all evidence at our disposal suggests that more people really liked the film than really disliked the film. Same goes for professional critics. Some critics blew the film out of the water, but some very respected critics gave the film extremely high marks (maltin and ebert come to mind). Anyways, despite the fact that prometheus is a very compelling and ambitious film, i think the writing is on the wall as far as any sequels are concerned. At first i thought the 10.11.12 gag was to get fan boys hyped up and chatting for a sequel that was to come in the next few years. I really doubt it at this point. I hope im wrong!!! i really really want to be, but the atmosphere isnt one that strikes me as positive. I really wish the creators of the film would grow a pair and defend their work. I know lindelof is trying to put out the fires of hate, but i dont think for one second he really thinks he ruined prometheus. He's just placating the haters. Though i agree with the OP's thoughts as far as the grim prospects of getting a sequel any time soon, i really wish the creators would take a stand and defend their work (it is easily defended!). Im so glad lindelof was involved with the project! Thank you damon for saving us from "alien: zero"! (no disrespect to spaihts...just making a point)

Why scott and / or lindeloff dont simply EXPLAIN the open points, and thats it? Jesus, it is that hard? I think i know why - because they dont have any answers, as lindelof does not have all the answers for lost. Not because he "does not want to tell", but because this is lazy writing. Putting some chunk in front of the audience, and maybe they will find some "logic" behind it (though in the mind of the writher there never was a logic at all.. thats the trick) - maybe not! Who cares, the people talk about it, and thats it. I think this is mind raping crap and does not satisfy at all. Who likes it - nice. I dont.

I don't think they will nix any hope of a sequel until the blu-ray is out. I really hope they make a sequel. I loved Prometheus as is but I'm sure I'd be even happier with it once I see the added footage on the blu-ray. I'll be mad if the alien fanboys that were mad they didn't get their prequel have ruined any chance of a Prometheus sequel. 2001, Alien and Bladerunner all had the exact same negative reviews when they first came out and it is only the extended cut of Bladerunner that is now well received rather than the original release of it. And the same people that originally hated those films ended up viewing them as classics as time passed and other people's opinions changed. It seems like a lot of scifi geeks have to wait until they see what other people think of a film and then when they see it's popular to hate it then they hate it but then when the majority later change their minds so do they. I find that pathetic and I'm sure the whiners will whine even more when nobody is willing to make sci-fi films when they can make stupid comedies that people will pay for and won't rip to shreds afterwards.

Yeah, keep your expectations low, a skeptic frown and if it ever comes out watch it with an open mind ... or empty mind...

I am not even thinking about the sequel right now.

@ JOEYJOE: Thanks for the effort you put into your excellent post! You're right, even at the expense of demystifying the enigma - they should as you say "stand by their work".

Yet there is nothing to warrant a sequel. Even if there is, I believe that will occur over time (five years or more) but of course I hope I'm wrong :p

For Ayn Rand There Was No Mystery This exact discussion here was the reasoning for my post of that. Not trying to change anybodies mind about being disappointed if there's no sequel. Of course I also wanna know what happens next, it's just a little something else to maybe say it wouldn't be such a BAD thing if a sequel never came?

I will be Über-bummed if there is no sequel. That is the film that ››› I ‹‹‹ really want to see... But, I don't think I need to grieve YET. FOX is experimenting with whatever the 10-11-12 thing is. It's tagged on the the very end of the film itself, for Engineers’ sake! If THAT goes to hell in a hand basket then Paradise is likely kaput, though.

@sukkal Your point about "It's tagged on the the very end of the film itself" brings me to something I was thinking about....If this link to the site has been there ever since the darn movie has been out, clearly, obviously, without a doubt, they either: A - Knew all along about something BIG they where going to do in association to that date. B - Where just planning on seeing how the movie would be perceived, and then go from there, and conclude with something small or mediocre for 101112. Either way, they did it for some strange reason, and we will all no doubt be on here discussing whatver the Xenomorph it is!!!

".. I believe it is too early to lean one way or another on this. .." @aurorian The sooner that this decision is made the better for all of us,,Commitments of the key actors must be made, Finacial planning./budgeting must be made....locations/stages must be reserved...ect. True, the movie was less than steller in box office..but look at the wide variety of critics/articles written .. and to me the most important..is the outlet for the stories,,,papers,,, If you have Scientific Amaerican magazine 0running an article on a movie,,then there is some serious interest,,that might linger awhile ,, several months,,if not years..Heck Prometheus might be referenced in a wide varity of publications..in nthe near future,, When the Vatican starts to include 'Prometheus references' in their publicartions..I would say the Fox will notice this,,,and OK production on P2
