What would you be willing to do?

What would you be willing to do? I think this question posed by David 8 is the key concept of the movie. The answer is "Anything and everything." The horror of the movie is a result of what "Anything and everything" can entail. The question is asked of every character in the movie. This I believe is what the movie is trying to convey. The fact that Ridley Scott and Lindeloff are what are driving the concepts in this movie assure me that the agenda of the movie is more than just to toss in interesting thought morsels to chew on. They mean to give us a blunt force blow to our frontal lobe. All the characters in this movie have to make decisions that reveal the extent of evil (or good) that is in them. Weyland is the ultimate evil in this movie. His selfish ambition and ego have created soulless automatons that do anything he wills and all life is expendable in order to reach his goals. These goals are the same as the dark Engineers. There are benefits that come with his ambition and that is the uplifting of part of mankind in the realm of technology and wealth. He represents the corporation that is cruel yet profitable for some. Weyland is Prometheus. He stole the fire. His kind will pay by getting his liver eaten out for stealing it. David 8 is soulless. His will is not unlike the monsters produced by the black goo. He is evolved with superhuman attributes but he has no soul and acts like it. He is like the Alien as anything else in this movie. The light Engineers seen in the beginning of the movie seem to want to evolve their humanity, their progeny (us) is a light version of themselves. Less evil, less powerful but more humane? The dark Engineers seem to believe that species need to be infused with the dark goo in order to go to the next level. The black goo they want to introduce is a evolutionary mutating agent that transforms species into soulless super survivors, very much like the Robot/Androids that Weyland created. Vickers is selfish but not inhuman, she is not as evil as Weyland but when the chips are down it's every man or woman for themselves. Captain Jadek is selfish and seemingly non-caring as well but when the chips are down he stands up to the challenge. Charlie Holloway is an atheist. He is prejudiced against robots/androids. Is concerned with finding answers, he is somewhat irresponsible of the danger that he is dealing with. He expects to find no deep meaning but he does want to understand. He is the most neutral and disbelieving of all characters but humane and self sacrificing when the chips are down. Dr. Elizbeth Shaw is the Christian. She is a believer. She saved Earth from destruction, she wants answers but not at the expense of her survival. I believe she will find a war between Light and Dark Engineers. That or the aftermath. The original title of the movie was Paradise, which leads me to think that a sequel will entail how paradise was lost. Note about "Light Engineers" The fact that there were Engineers on Earth after the birth of Christ who didn't introduce the black goo to humanity means that there may be more than one faction of Engineers. The interruption of the LV-233 Earth mission via the accidental self-infection may have been a "miracle" symbolized by occurring at the time of Christ. This miracle may have been either intentional or accidental. I could be wrong.

Good review, GREAT review, but I'm sorry to say this just has to get thrown in to the "maybe" pile with all of the other reviews, because sadly, the only way we will know the answer and stop assuming is to pry the damn answer out of RIdley. Not trying to take away from your review at all I seriously like it, and it makes clear sense, there is no arguing against it. But nobody can say you're right or wrong at this point which is the cause of all this frustration in the first place. Only way for your great idea to hold anything, is for people to keep agreeing with it and keep it at the top of the forum, which I learned from experience, isn't going to happen and your idea will just get stuck down at the bottom somewhere after a few days. But here's to bumping this thread up for now, and may it hopefully survive the test of time!!!

I'd be willing to see the movie 6 times! (at the last count).

I just watched this interview with the writers which may reveal the motivations of the Engineers which might put the kibosh on my Light & Dark Engineers http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tf8FkE45gqc Lindloff points out the Engineers may have been disappointed by the arrogance and actions of the human race which is demonstrated in the form of Weyland and/or we may have been just an experiment whose time has run out. This is hinted at in the scene when David responds how disappointed we would be if the answer to why we were created was, "because we could."

Yes, its interesting and here's and interesting question: Would you as a human knowingly go out of your way to infect Holloway as David did to try and achieve the same effect as what eventually happens to Shaw with the whole 'conception' thing? It would be a gross perversion even further to the darker side of humanity if that were the case as Bourke knowingly tried to get both Ripley and Newt 'infected' both to shut her up, what she saw and knows about him and The Companies plan but also to ensure the creatures survival back to The Company labs. This action from a person is far more an insideous nature to have to face as is the idea that a person can command their technology, in this case David, Ash ect, to do their perversed bidding as well... It makes you think of the Nazis and the sick mentalities they employed to carry out the things and crimes against humanity that they conducted.

I don't think Holloway is an atheist. maybe a "reformed" christian, however, how many atheists do you know with a cross tattooed on their person? With my group of heavily inked friends I can say.....not many on my end. He seems like a Christian who has been let down and lost his way....I think he believes in something and that is why is so depressed and let down when he speaks of being "abandoned' .

Very very good topic! Nicely put together. I really like your take on the "Light and Dark" Engineer factions. And I especuially find your theory regarding the "miracle" being Christ is what saved humanity those 2000 years prior. A miracle no doubt. Are you suggesting the "Light Engineers" released a greater evil on their Dark counterparts to stop them from destroying humanity? Or... Did the Light Engineers create HUMANS and the Dark engineers create the XENOMORPH??? I like this topic as I can see it branching off into a number of other possible conclusions. Well done!

At this point I trust neither Ridley, or Lindelof to honestly admit their concepts and motivations for the contents of the film. I would only believe what they said if the source material was dated before the release of Prometheus in theaters. There have been countless in depth analysis of the film by fans, as well as critics and some of them absolutely brilliant. So for me at this point I have to curb some bias against the borrowing of the absolute best theories from places like this, and people like you. Clearly there are some creative thinkers on this site, and it's unfortunate that some of them were not involved in the creation of the film, it could have resulted in something mind boggling, that stood alone and did not require a sequel. Even Prometheus doesn't require a sequel it's the fans that want to further glimpse down the rabbit hole which drives the story along.

Life is about choices. Ridley and his writers made theirs choices and presented those to us. As an audience, we too have choices to makes, and most have made those. It is a rather simple matter and none of these are absolute and or fully definable in that they represent everyone's idealize view of the movie. Everyone came away with a different interpretation of what they saw and might have understood. It is an individual's choice that made the movie what it is...

Alien had a definite end, am I wrong? The thing got blown out the airlock and fried, Ripley went to sleep. The end. Why so hard to make this fit in with what was already established? Why go off "on a different tangent, but still in the same universe" ? Makes absolutely no sense the way this was done.

@cypher: i think what you mentioned is the very core reason why some do not like prometheus (I believe the whole "plot hole" thing is really sort of a manifestation of the core disappointment in the direction of the film. Its not REALLY about the "plot holes" in the film (just my opinion....could be wrong)). Personally, after seeing the film several times, i feel i am A) able to understand the the soul of the film on multiple levels (obviously some things are completely unknown by design) and B) VERY happy that the filmmakers moved prometheus further away from "alien: zero". Looking back as objectively as i possibly can, i feel like eggs, xenos, and a straight forward excursion with just a glimpse of the SJ aspects would have probably been a complete bust (for me). I think its just an aesthetic thing. Prometheus was a big departure from what most of us expected. Really like the fact that prometheus complicates and further elaborates on this fictional universe that we know and love. The "alien" universe is now so much richer and multi-dimensional because of prometheus. I hate it that alot of us didnt like the film. Maybe time will allow things to change? who knows?

I really don't know joeyjoe, all I do know is that after waiting 20+ years for answers this has just served to piss a lot of fans of the original off. We want to know why that Space Jockey had a hold full of eggs and how he got infected in the first place. We thought we were seeing the Derelict crashing when the trailer first came out. We thought we'd FINALLY learn where the Aliens came from, what they were created for, and whom they were meant for. What we got was LOST in Space. Unsatisfying, ambiguous, flat. Not what we had hoped from Ridley Scott.

@Chris, re: "Are you suggesting the "Light Engineers" released a greater evil on their Dark counterparts to stop them from destroying humanity?" Answer: Yes. That or it was just fortuitous. @Chris: re: "Did the Light Engineers create HUMANS and the Dark engineers create the XENOMORPH???" Possibly yes. But from watching the Lindeloff interview I posted in this thread it may also be possible that it's not as complicated as that. They may have changed their minds about us 2000 years ago, due to events they are angry about. I think Ridley and the writers want to give a nod to Christ without involving Him because that would be too devisive a subject. @Cypher: In interviews, Ridley Scott said he watched all 4 Aliens (he doesn't consider AVP as being a valid part of the Alien universe. I don't either.) and concluded that no one addressed that burning question, "who is the Space Jockey and what was he doing with those eggs?" Ridley thinks the Alien Franchise is fully tapped out but the Engineers are a story in themselves. Regarding the end being so open ended the writers needed to leave the option of a sequel so that the studios get satisfied.

Good analysis, but the one thing very much alluded by Ridley Scott is the reason the Engineers "changed their minds", and it has everything to do with Christ. The Engineers came to Earth every several hundred years or so to enlighten humanity. Then, a little over 2,000 years ago the emissary sent to enlighten humanity was instead killed. More specifically, he was crucified. That was the event which set the destruction of humanity into action. THEY gave us life. They have the right to take it away. Unfortunately fate stepped in, and their bio-weapon destroyed them before they had a chance. Now, consider this: Shaw is heading directly into the hornets nest with the very symbol of the Engineers emissary's murder hanging around her neck.

Ive seen it 6 times so far, and every time it got better. It does answer a lot of questions, and opens new ones, what more can a hardcore fan ask for?? This way theres a sequel and twice as much mystery and fun and visual orgasm on the screen. Perfect. Thank you!!

Loved it, just wanted to add a bit of bio on Vickers, she is seen doing press ups in the beginning, and notice HER medical pod is only calibrated for males, she wanted to become the strong male air Weyland wanted, this is why she despises David, as he is what she wants to be, there must be history here as in the beginning when Weyland addresses David he states; 'David is the closest thing to a son I ever had' Implying Vickers is worthless to him. Just my input.

The best review I have heard to date, really! And never mind about what Ripley was really trying to say or convey, that fact that You came away with this and shared it, brings the movie to a whole new level. And this is why we pay for the tickets in the first place. Thanks.
