I do agree with the ending, they should have had the Engineer get up off the floor push the Trilobite to the side and stumble to another Derelict and plot a course.
Then have him in his seat and see something starting to burst out.
They never had to show the full chest buster.... this would have led to more of a Mystery and had us guessing more that maybe this scene links to Alien when it may not have done so.
As it stands the ending simply shows us that this Engineer was not the one piloting the ship that crashed in Alien and it was indeed another but we would known that anyway, well most would.
What the ending did was also give us a hint that the Black Substance through a series of events leads to the creation of a Organism that is similar to the Xeno.
This leaves the door open for Ridley to explore the Deacon, but then is it that different from a Xeno, and thus a movie about the Deacon and its offspring could be just another Bug Movie?
I would have left the ending how it was but after the credits i would have added another scene, i would have show a Derelict flying in space heading to a ringed planet that has 4 moons, we go to the Pilot in his Chair and then cut to a Egg Chamber and see a Egg start to open and just see the Face Huggers Fingers appear.... then fade to black.
The above would have visually described in less detail exactly what Ridley said had happened to the Derelict. We would have been able to note that the ship could had been heading in the system that contains LV 223, we would see that a Face Hugger gets lose from the Cargo hold and that although not shown that what happens next is it infects the Pilot who then has to make a emergency landing on LV 426.
This scene would have no date on it and would be like the begging scene a flash back.
Thats how i would have ended Prometheus....
