He didn't. Weyland had a business lunch with an Engineer Rep one day and got an invite he found hard to refuse. This was all a corporate ruse to get him to take BLACK ILLNESS back to his territory. LOL It's like the film CONTACT where one of the nay-sayers suggests that the 'travel device' is just a massive bomb that the aliens email to any lifeforms who're CLEVER ENOUGH TO MAKE IT and therefore 'eliminate the competition' at source - without the need for expensive war or invasion. Do you believe me?

PS: Weyland going off after Engineers like that is like someone racing off into the sky looking for a beardy God having read the Bible. Frankly, this doesn't ring true. More likely is a PLOT ELEMENT that Lindelof a) hasn't shared with us yet or b) never got round to resolving. Ya know?
