Ridley is in search of locations for the sequel?

MemberOvomorphMarch 18, 20134570 Views35 RepliesRidley Scott has traveled to the island of Gran Canaria (Spain) according to this source to film a movie without revealing too many details, and here they say that he traveled with his usual collaborator Arthur Max.
According to this article Scott said: "We have been seeing possible locations for a great movie, we found several that we liked a lot, and that means that I will return. Basically we seek natural landscapes, wild nature, but at this stage we will have to build many great things, that's what I do ".
Furthermore he added: "I don't want to talk about the film because it is confidential," he reiterated several times yesterday. "It takes place in natural settings, with important scenarios and funds with big mountains, big rocks, deserts, etc. Correspondingly the film Lawrence of Arabia that had many scenarios, impressive backgrounds, is the same style" said.
I wonder if this has anything to do with the sequel of Prometheus...because I read a few days ago that Ridley will be responsible for directing a movie about Moses called "Exodus" and 12 short of science fiction for Machinima.
So what do you think?

It sounds like this could surely be location scouting for Paradise, especially when considering Ms. Rapace's recent comments. I certainly hope so – for nature is one thing that we have truly yet to see of the Alien universe. Thanks for the links @Shambhala

AMG Blade Runner!! Ty Shambs! Strange thing, it's not really clear if Ridley is directing, all sites I have seen say Ang Lee is (taken over from Spielberg) O_o.

Shambhala, I sure hope so! Although a movie about Moses could be filmed with similar landscapes, which is why I am a little concerned. Another concern is this statement Scott made (Google translated)...
"If I say something else, you will know what film it is and the truth is that there is a big competition that is not to say that. It is written and so I can afford a nutshell, the casting is over but I can not say who will be in the movie, and the fact that we are working on location means that we are moving a lot, because when you do a film, you can not get there on a Monday and say come on let's roll."
Why would 'Paradise' have "competition"? 'Exodus', on the other hand does have competition with Warner Bros. pushing for their Moses film, 'Gods and Kings' which now has Ang Lee directing, replacing Spielberg. Unless that is, of course, I misunderstand "competition" and if by competition, he means there is a lot of pressure to make sure no one knows what the film is, not that the film itself has competition, then, I am a little less concerned. :-)
What else is interesting in the LA Opinion article is:
1) Scott mentions 'Blade Runner II' and that the script is "green, but very good".
2) Scott says in 'Prometheus' the "idea was to open a new world of possibilities in this universe and we are already working on the second part."
Svanya, 'Gods and Kings' was taken over by Ang Lee from Spielberg, but 'Exodus' has always been under Ridley Scott. Here is the latest I've read on these Moses films.

Svanya, sure! How about the comments about 'Blade Runner II' have a "green, but very good script" and 'Prometheus' and they are "already working on the second part"? Nice, huh?

Here are some pictures of landscapes in the Canary Islands. Like I said earlier, there is concern for me that some of the landscapes can be used for filming 'Exodus', but when I look at these, I feel they would suit 'Paradise' very well, depending on Scott's vision (he did say "paradise can not be what you think it is. Paradise has a connotation of being extremely sinister and ominous."). I don't know about you, but I would say these landscapes (including those with plants, etc.) look fairly "sinister and ominous" even before any possible post-production additions, etc.

@Membrane, Thank you very much for that! and I'm sorry for omitting the points about Prometheus and Blade Runner lol but I was busy so again thanks for the help. :)
Regarding all this, well, the only certainty is that Ridley Scott is a busy man, I really hope that he can made Prometheus. That should be the big question for Prometheus and Blade Runner fans...
Ridley may do at least one of these so anticipated films? The best of course would be that both are made.
Something very interesting is that Scott again refers to Lawrence of Arabia, so now we are between a rock and a hard place, because despite having relationship with Prometheus, anyway we can not ignore the context and setting of the epic of Moses..
Also I'm agree that this landscape can be used for both movies, so they kill two birds with one shot, I suppose...and TY for the pictures, they all look beautiful and are definitely made for a movie of epic proportions, then my fingers crossed on this.

some possibly awesome news, if not Prometheus it could be great anyway and btw, those pictures all look amazing!

My biggest wish is that location will be picked for a Paradise :-)
I would love the idea that R. Scott will be focused only on his "baby" The Alien universe :-) we fans would deserve it :-)
I have a pretty good idea of where it is. It's just down there, in the basement....

Ok here is my take on this after reading the article links and looking at the images: As much as we would like to only hear about Paradise and Blade Runner 2, I believe Scott probably succeeded in signing Christian Bale to Exodus, and since Gods and Kings is being hurried along by Warner Bros. , 20th Century Fox and Scott are fast tracking Exodus. The images suggest both Exodus and Paradise so maybe some could be used for both, but lets not look at this with our rose colored glasses that we all would like to see through but lets be realistic. Scott is indeed very busy but apparently this Exodus movie completing before Warner Bros.' Gods and Kinds is extremely important to Fox so they must have made him a very very lucrative deal and since they are bank rolling Paradise, which they have already green lighted, he would be a fool at this point to alienate them. Regarding Blade Runner II, it does sound like they are using the K.W. Jeter BR sequel based upon Blade Runner Down for the script based upon the information in the above link. If this is true its going to radically change all of my ideas about BR 2, and they would have a difficult time in casting from my view, not nessesarilly from the standpoint of Deckard, since that character is supposed to have aged at least a decade, but from the stand point of Rachel, who is supposed to have aged hardly at all due to being a replicant - but a different model subtype than Deckard who is a Nexes 6, but the same actress who looks exactly like the original Rachel is supposed to play Tyrell's niece and here is where they would really have some casting problems. They would essentially need an actress who looks just like Sean Young AS SHE LOOKED IN BLADE RUNNER!!! I would be very very frustrated in a different actress playing that role and Sean Young is too old now unfortunately...

@nostromo001, you have articulated some of my concerns well. I agree that Fox and WB will be in competition to get the first Moses film out as there really isn't any "competition" for 'Paradise'. Without my "rose tinted glasses" on, I do think 'Exodus' is what Scott was more likely scouting locations for, but with them on, I wonder if a story about Moses could really use all of the types of landscapes that the Canary Islands has to offer.
Think Egypt and you'll see that only a handful of the landscapes from the Canary Islands can be used. They may be able to use some desert and areas with palm trees, but what else could a Moses story use?
With 'Paradise', I see them wanting to use areas that cover all types of landscapes that we can think of, and show that the place of "paradise" would without a doubt have everything we would ever see. Desert, tropical, coastal, volcanic, strange formations, deep valleys, large mountains, steep cliffs, black sands, red rocks, etc... all of which the Canary Islands has - and I think 'Paradise' will look like the "paradise" we imagine on the surface, but underneath would be hell like we've never seen.
Would going to the Canary Islands only for a Moses story be a waste of money for Fox? In other words, would Fox be willing to send Scott to the Canary Islands to get principal photography for both 'Exodus' and 'Paradise'? :-)

First of all, @Shambhala, great post and thanks for sharing the related articles. Also, it's great to read all the inspiring comments made by others so far, I'm always amazed by how many interesting thoughts are coming together so quickly after a good thread like this one has been started. The forum at its best again, just like it's been during the hype of "Prometheus"in its early stages as well as close to its release.
As much as I would like to get excited about the 'potential news', it also brings back memories about all the secrecy, confidentiality and smoke-screening about 3 years ago, what was then followed by a flood of information so that many of us around here knew far too much about "Prometheus" before having even seen it. First time I saw it, I thought I was watching an extended trailer! But every time I rewatch it now, it keeps growing on me. Still though, reading this almost has a deja vu feel to it and I swore to myself not to make that same mistake twice. Will I be strong enough to resist though? Anyway, that's just my personal opinion and off the original post's topic.
Ok here's my take: Am I the only one feeling like what was shown to us in "Prometheus" wasn't as much alien-like, unearthy and extraterrestial as it could have, should have been? When they landed on LV-223, it felt like we just came back to the very same location as in the opening sequence shot in Iceland, couldn't spot much of a difference there. And we all know what's possible these days with the clever use of CGI's and digital re-colouring.
Taking the above posted pics (beautiful, by the way) as an example, we can see that even raw, unedited pictures of earth-based landscapes can already look more "fantastic" than what we've seen in "Prometheus". Did those mountains really feel like there were dwarfing Mt Everest? Not to me. This setting could have easily been a lost valley in the Rockies or the Alps, if it wasn't for the cloud formations, those few digitally added volcanic looking rocks and of course, the 'temples'.
On the contrary, looking at all the incredible imagery we're getting from Mars through "Curiosity's" lenses, one could argue: "Well this is extraterrestial and doesn't look much like it, all somehow pretty familiar." However, Scott's choices for backrops such as "Wadi Rum" were genius. All I'm saying is, more could have been done to it to make us feel like we really are far out in deep space... and I didn't quite get that feeling.
I know this is a long shot now, but does anyone here know about the so called 'Tepui's' (particularly "Roraima"), those table mountains in Venezuela and Guyana? I always thought Scott would at least try to shoot there or get inspired by it, although I'm aware that it is next to impossible to get a permission for shooting. Not to mention the costs of getting the crew up there. Anyway, it's just an idea as it looks very similar to LV-426's surface.
To summarize, I really like Prometheus for what it is, I am excited to see the sequel(s) coming along, but I hope Scott heard our voices, will take his time and will do better than he did with Prometheus, I personally see a lot of room for improvements.
Still on topic, don't you guys think it's a little bit early for scouting locations when even the first draft script is still in such early stages of development? I'm finding that pretty unrealistic. Well, time will tell...
March 19, 2013
@HAL 9000, I don't know enough about typical time-frames and steps in movie making to answer your last question. But my thought is it may not be too early to scout a location if Scott already knows what "paradise" should like like, regardless of how much of the script is written.

Meh. Moses – I can give that a miss, for sure :(
The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent
March 19, 2013
@Membrane: You might have a point with that. Since Scott is a very visually orientated director, working pretty much from behind and even moreso, through the camera, this could support that thought. He probably knew all the way what he'd wants for "Paradise". If that's good or bad, or even better we won't find out for quite a while.
Furthermore, scouting for locations does not set anything in stone, everything can still change dramatically as we've seen with "Prometheus" when they went out to re-shoot and add footage far into production. Another good thing is that apparently Arthur Max is with him, and he certainly knows what he's doing, he might be able to keep the jumpy Mr. Scott on a slightly more straight line. Haha!
How about my other point, did "Prometheus" feel unearthy, weird and fantastic enough for you when thinking about backdrops, landscapes and locations? I'd recommend looking up pictures of "Mt Roraima" to get the idea about a certain inspiration I was referring to.
Those table mountains have also inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle for his novel "The Lost World" as well as Pixar Studios when designing "UP". The chemistry and even certain physical laws we all take for granted here on Earth could be so very different out there, and I'd love to see Scott's vision of that much more boldly! Let me put the following quote here once more:
"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain..."

@HAL 9000, Mt. Roraima is breathtaking...

Although it was beautifully shot, I agree that LV-223 did not feel as "unearthly" as LV-426 did, but that may have been by design. In other words, maybe we will find out more in 'Paradise' why the Engineers chose LV-223 and the terrain/landscape could have something to do with it.
To have made LV-223 more "unearthly", they could have shot more at night or at dusk/dawn where the landscape was more of a hint instead of clearly seen in the daylight.
How about flying into Roraima and finding an opening to a Giger-inspired world inside those table mountains in 'Paradise'? :-)
