Hi there
I can only smile when I read your posts.
I felt the same way a year ago when prometheus
Came out.
Ambiguity is not a bad thing.
But
There are limits.
Yes
The questions I believe were made not to be aNswered out right. That leaves open a lot of speculation. Which I believe was the intended purpose.
I implore you to read the secrets of the dark liquid revealed and read every post very carefully .
I would also implore you to read all the stickies and aquint yourself with. That is the only way you can form a decent opinion for yourself.

I just happened on this website like yesterday, so there's a lot to read! But I'm getting through it. I know there's a lot that I'm missing, maybe just not linking things in my head properly, idk.
But given the choice of a movie that has everything completely laid out for you or a movie that sparks real conversation, I'll take the latter!

MemberOvomorphJun-02-2013 4:09 PMHello Dawning!
Oduodu-
I love Prometheus but then I love a lot of things that don't make sense. That sort of surreal reality bending is I think especially appropriate to Sci Fi, though of course only a rarified little segment of it. I was ever so delighted in the theatre, and while I have the BluRay, I'm so protective of my memories of the film that I've only watched it once, I don't want to become jaded! Dorky, I know.
I like it more, now, and that's at least in part down to this site and the wonderful mods and posters that make it what it is. There's a great spectrum of personalities here, and a healthy spectrum of opinion as well.
It totally adds to the horror of Alien, this sort of re telling of the story in a different format, the new threats ( Goo, Engineers, and whatever made them) and the relative absence of the Morb, so we know now there's much, much more to fear, genetic madness and fertility run amok. The ambiguity is important to this, how could we ever truly understand something so foreign? I was much more disturbed than if I had seen another jack in the box monster movie.
Actually I think Prometheus makes perfect sense, if you're invested enough in it. Lots of people simply don't want this type of film, and its understandable, its usually independent films that indulge in such arty mischief. But that's what makes it a true treasure ( IMO), such an expensive, high profile movie being so singularly weird, and so well crafted, a totally immersive experience. To the extent we're still immersed. Really, a celebration of science fiction itself.
Prometheus is one thing, and this site is another, and the two together is just too fantastic. I hope you like it here, and get some satisfaction from your time with us!

So there are people out there that can say that prometheus has grown on them . That is enough for me to know that people's liking continue to grow. That's wonderful to know.

MemberDeaconJun-02-2013 4:40 PMWell i dont want to get into a long post lol....
Basically i enjoyed the movie, i do think some of the deleted scenes explain more and should have been kept in.
Overall the movie has its disappointments, this is not because its a bad movie, just that the potential was not explored as well as could, but then this is where sequels can come in.
I dont mind the Ambiguity, i dont mind how some Characters kind of acted a bit out of character and well did some silly things.
I think the only major faults are inconsistencies and contradictions.
Visually it was a masterpeice it has some flaws and the main one being the Engineer size as they was trying to give the impression of him being 10ft tall, but while some seems he looks tall in other you can clearly see he is 7.5ft tall...
Maybe with more of a budget and in hindsight they could have gone the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit Special Effects route where say 5ft6" actors appear to be 3ft6" Hobbits next to 6ft actors who play Humans or what ever.
But this same kind of thing happened with Alien where the idea was to portray the Space Jockey as 25ft tall........ they use Child Actors as they was walking to the chair, then used the proper actors up close and these basically showed the Space Jockey to be 20ft plus in one scene but then 15ft tops in the next.
The only other gripes being that maybe the story could have been used better and also less contradiction in the clues.
Still a Good Movie, and i do like the changes made to Spaights script as his was more of just another Alien movie, if you read Lindloffs drafts they are actually more detailed than the final movie, i do think the Ambiguity could have been toned down a bit but then i did prefer Lindeloffs creative ideas of how to change Spaights Script.
Overall i give the movie 3.5* out of 5, or more likely 7.5/10
For reference here is the other in franchise.
Alien 9/10, Aliens 8.5/10, Alien 3 7/10 Alien Resurrection 6/10
Oh lets rate for comparison the Predators....
Predator 9/10 Predator II 7.5/10, Predators 7.5/10 AVP 6.5/10 AVPR 5/10

Hi there
Has the movie remained the same ? If you watch it now has it grown on you or does it still leave you with the same impression as when you watched it the first time ?
Does it have staying power ? Will it become a classic ?
BigDave
MemberDeaconJun-02-2013 4:52 PMI will second that, if we was spoon fed the plot and secrets it would lead to a lot less debate lol...
Some of the Ambiguity is great like the Mural, the Dead Engineers etc i really like how we dont get to know exactly what the deal was.
Just inconsistencies mainly in how the Goo at the start of the movie worked and the one in the Urns and how they kind of try and hint its one and the same..... When well how does one pass Engineer DNA and the other Xeno DNA if its one and the same.
Yeah Fox released a file but as said in other thread this just confused things more as it never added up with what we saw in the movie.
The Ambiguity for the most part does lead to a intriguing possibilities for the franchise. With any of the areas we dont have clear answers for being explained more in future movies, while maybe also then creating more questions..
Like the Space Jockey, we got some answers but not every one about him, while leaving us now with more questions regarding Alien and the Space Jockey and leaving us with more about the Engineers.
If the movie ended as it did and no sequels then yes it would be a bummer.... but as there is a part 2 and maybe part 3 i am sure we will get some more answers to the questions we got, but then these answers will create yet more questions.
Its all very clever.

MemberDeaconJun-02-2013 5:00 PMI actually think its improved a bit, i guess by that after we watched it a few times we accept its flaws, we accept that yes the movie did not answer our questions not in a spoon fed way.
And yes maybe getting over the Engineer height issue...
The movie did not live up to what it could have been, but then once that has been accepted and then you go back and watch the movie for what it is.
Then its more enjoyable.
I think its just maybe the plot exeuction was not as good as could been, Alien was a good plot that was well executed, Aliens was a basic action movie bug fest like Star Ship Troopers, it added some character to the Xeno and Queen and it was well executed.
The back bone of Prometheus Plot was better than Aliens and i would say even Alien, but with so much potential in such a plot i feel the movie did not execute it as well as could.
More of a connection to the Xeno and Engineers and Goo, more depth look at the Engineers etc...
These are all things the plot has that are not fully explored.....
But these are potential, you see with bigger budget and time and these potential plots in Paradise and a 3rd in the Franchise they can then clearly commit a movie that will explore in depth all these things.
Thats why i think Paradise has such a huge potential to not only surpass Prometheus but maybe also Aliens and dare i say Alien if done well.

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2013 1:22 AMYeah I loved it then and have been hopelessly obsessed ever since. There is truly nothing else like it. Watching it over and obsessing over subtle details has helped shaped some things out a lot such as the origins of the xenomorph. Like the fact that the Deacon is born attached to a human placenta, which suggests strongly that it wouldn't be an egg layer since its birth is a mammalian birth and egg laying is more typical of invertebrates. There is a creature in the film that is an invertebrate and an hermaphrodite to boot, and it's also the only creature in the film shown to have acid for blood; the hammerpede. Since the hammerpede is simply a mutated worm it follows that it would be an egg-layer and what lends more credence to this is the fact that Lindelof states in the commentary that the worms are 'track one' in terms of the film's relationship with Alien. The hammerpede has always been touted as a precursor of the facehugger and the fact that it evolved from worms that are native to LV-223, a place where silica storms are quite frequent, it is more than sensible to assume it is the ancestor of the xenomorph. Every xeno in its larval stage are worm-like and shed their skin like worms.
I mention the silica storms since this recalls what Ash says about the facehugger's prolonged resistance to adverse environmental conditions; 'shedding its cells and replacing them with polarised silicon.' As the 8th most common element in the universe by mass, silicon is widely distributed in dusts, sands, planetoids, and planets as various forms of silicon dioxide, otherwise known as silica or silicates.
The worms are the beginning of the classic xenomorph; they thrived in a place where silica storms were frequent and they provide context to what happened on the derelict and the species life-cycle itself.

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2013 7:35 AMWhen I first saw it I wasn't to sure. I mean the space jockey being a human, at first I didn't really like it. Well but since then I have come to understand Prometheus alot more and I love the Idea of the spacejockey being human, it adds so many more possibilities. I think Prometheus has opened up the whole alien story and expanded it dramatically.
The film is such an enigma. There are so many elements to it, symbolism, analogies, a totaly puzzle of a movie, which I think is probably a cinematic first.
I cant wait to see number 2, I want to know for certain what the black goo is and what the green stone is for.

The sad thing is that outside of this site there is not much buzz about the movie or a future release.
That is a shame because there could be some excellent storyline to explore.

MemberPraetorianJun-03-2013 10:20 AMAfter seeing the franchise pan (or peter!) out, I was excited to know what Ridley was going to do with the story. Prometheus looked beautiful. The story was not what I expected at all & came as a total surprise! I found some elements frustrating, yet enigmatic.
Not being a direct prequel bugged me at first. Now I think it was definitely the only way to go. I was also a little disappointed that there wasn't that doom laden claustrophobia, nor shock-ridden, scary moments a la Alien. But this was a different type of story, expanded in concept & landscape.
The shocks came more from the misconceptions the human race has about it's creation, rather than any visceral moments. On the one hand Ridley tried to give us something new & different, yet you can see the roots of Alien & Giger intertwined & extrapolated throughout, taking us down a parallel path. A symbiosis, which leaves Alien intact.
A year down the line, I can't wait for a sequel. There will be some answers, but a whole new set of frustrating questions will arise! That ultimately is what makes it a success. I've always been totally obsessed with Alien & I'm now the same about Prometheus & where it could lead us!

MemberDeaconJun-03-2013 4:32 PM@Dawning
Yes it seems Prometheus 2 could be called Paradise, well i think it may be called... Prometheus : Paradise.
As at the end of Prometheus and the deleted scene, David informs to Shaw that the Engineers did not come from LV223 but a place that we call Paradise and this is their home world and its where Shaw wants David to take her.
As far as the debate about the Hammerpedes and Face Hugger, we never saw the Trilobite get cut open so we cant rule out it would also have Acid for Blood.
To me the Trilobite was the closest to a Face Hugger as it indeed performed the same task....
However the Mural shows Face Huggers, and Ridley had stated that the Xenomorph had been around way before the events of Prometheus so nothing in Prometheus becomes the Proto Xeno but they are all merely Evolution of the Organism.

MemberOvomorphJun-06-2013 5:43 PMThis about sums up my feelings towards Prometheus:
Watched it the other day and had always assumed after Janek flirts with Vickers the two escaped away for some "relief" but I finally confirmed it. Janek is doing Vickers. It is confirmed in the most subtle way in the next scene.....Milburn and Fifield contact the hammerpede and radio back to the ship, they keep trying to reach the Prometheus but can't because Janek isn't keeping watch like he should be.
awesome

MemberOvomorphJun-08-2013 1:11 PM@BigDave, regarding the 'pedes and trilobite, true, we don't see the trilobite be cut open but that is precisely the point, Lindelof stated in the commentary that there are two tracks in regard to Alien; the worms and Holloway's infection.
Now, it's sensible to assume that the mutagen will utilize the host's sexual reproduction that is available to it; the mutagen utilized Holloway's sperm, that sperm mutated into a giant facehugger creature and the end result was a deacon.
Now, the Deacon is surely no where near as evolved as the classic xeno; it features no tail, has human teeth and is overall far more humanoid. It is born with a human placenta; placentals don't lay eggs. Again, placentals don't lay eggs! "Is it an egg layer?" - Lindelof
So what came first? The Queen or the Egg?
Recall the hammerpede; a mutated worm and an obvious hermaphrodite with acid for blood, it's behaviour is akin to a classic facehugger; it constricted tighter around Milburn's arm when touched and went down his throat like a Facehugger's proboscis.
Now, I don't think the 'pede laid anything inside Milburn; given how bloodied it was when it exited his mouth it simply made a snack of his innards. But since the 'pede is essentially a larger and nastier worm it follows that its lifecycle would be that of an egg layer and the next generation would be the classic facehugger.
Why not? The pede has always been known as a precursor to the facehugger, the film misdirects us with the Trilobite and Deacon.
This makes sense given the fact that classic huggers replace their cells with silicone and silica storms were prevalent on '223 and the only native creatures we see in the film are the worms.
GOO>WORM>HAMMERPEDE>EGG>FACEHUGGER>ENGINEER>XENOMORPH/QUEEN
How do you think the queen got its egg laying capabilities? It follows that since the xenos are hermaphrodites, skin shedders and appear as worms when they're born that they are descendants of the worms native to LV-223 where these worms thrived in adverse environmental conditions of frequent silica storms.

MemberOvomorphJun-20-2013 12:29 PMI like it less now than on first viewing and her is why. There were not many characters to like in Prometheus. If there isn't anyone I care about or can relate to, I don't care what happens in the movie: It becomes boring. The ship's crew seemed to be drawn from from low-level criminal idiots, while the price-tag for such a mission would have been huge. This is such an error, I can no longer suspend disbelief for the rest of the movie. Guess the future with its population of 12 billion plus people has very few qualified people to hire for such a mission? The visual shots of the gas-giant are pure gold. Wow. Like pearls before swine. This disparity between the tools of great movie-making (A-list actors and first-rate special effects) and the incompetent, idiotic writing, makes me angry at those who squandered the chance to make a great movie and instead delivered the audience inconsistent, boring garbage. Can no one tell a good story? Can no one hire a competent sci-fi writer like John Varley, Larry Niven, or Harlen Ellison? Please give us smart, competent characters to care about and don't patronize us with "big-picture god mystery crap". Allow us to draw the big picture from the smaller pieces. this gives us "buy -in", we are onboard, we are invested.

MemberFacehuggerJun-21-2013 8:38 AMYer soo true wily trout they all seem to be 'low level idiots' when Ridley him self says they are 'cutting edge scientists' . And it is things like this that are the biggest plot holes of all - and many of the fans of the movie just don't get. People don't just hate the movie because its ambiguous / unclear they hate the parts that plain don't make sense and that is the very definition of a plot hole.
Dont get me wrong I think most people like a bit of ambiguity and some of it works in this film but too much is also a bad thing and like I say this is actually a separate thing in parts from the 'plot holes' or if you want call them 'mistakes' or just plain illogical film making decisions instead if your hung up on the idea of a plot hole.
I too have not changed I thought it was almost a 6/10 when I left the movie the first time and im still about at that level : http://www.prometheus2-movie.com/community/forums/topic/24846&page=2
I think the only thing that would change my opinion would be if the second one or viral stuff somehow fed back into this first film making it look better - it could still happen I guess but after what I have seen so far I doubt it!
And yes the greatest thing about it all is the overall idea encompassing this theme which has had us all talking so much - pity it never got executed properly.

Hi there
If there isn't anyone I care about or can relate to, I don't care what happens in the movie: It becomes boring.
I understand your opinion but how do you like a movie only based on how you relate to the characters ? What about the story ? What about how it related to alien ? Its in the same universe is only a jump of point for other movies that will follow.
The ship's crew seemed to be drawn from from low-level criminal idiots.
There was a thread about the plotholes but it is unstickied now. Search for it ans read it if you want to .I personaly don't see the "idiot" crew as a plothole.
BECAUSE
Anyone who goes on a mission for more than 2 years of hypersleep and not know what they will end up doing is probably idiots
OR
They are in serious need of money
AS
Fifield indicated to milburn when he said he was only there to make money.
he price-tag for such a mission would have been huge. This is such an error
I agree remember that weyland was dying and he had days to live . There was a pauling medpod that was calibrated for a male (I believe it was weyland) as it was in vickers room (why not calibrated fir her who is a woman ? ).
BECAUSE
Weyland wanted bypass surgery done if they were able to find something that couild genetically regenerate him whoch why david told weyland that it was still to early to say if they have discovered anything that coild do that .thetefore money was irellivant and he woild have any amouint ti get people there to helop him stay alive .it seems he was looking for a way way to make a copy of his organs.
SO
Money no issue as loing as people are there to help him.
That was there only purpose
He didn't care for
There personalities or criminal tendencies. He jad very short time.
Money talks bulshit walks
Prometheus was intended start not to be a full answer but rather a ridley remake of what things should have been , a possible hint at what he would have done had he been given the chance to do the second alien. Svanya quite clearly indicated the other day that prometheus is very much the original starbeast script and ridleye is using ideas he wasn't able to in the original alien. It came from his heart.
May I ask you ?
1 do you know the starbeast connection to alien ?
2 do you uinderstand that there was a human skull in front of the original alien in alien ?(Where did this creature come from ?) What is relevance to black goo.
3 who is the space jockey and where did he come from and what happened to him and where did those eggs come from ?
4 are prometheus and alien in thye same universe ?
If these questions aren't apparent/relevant to your fraime of reference then I can understand prometheus might not be that important as a movie standalone (by itself)
Anyways
I respect your opinion but lease read ip on the issues I have mentioned . It may show you something you didn't previouisly know.
Live long prosper !!!

Ridley scott said they were 'cutting edge scientists' - how many cutting edge scientists are stupid? Simple as that it doesn't make sense plain and simple that is what a plot hole is. I mean as well just look at Weyland himself - supposedly one of the most intelligent men in history up to that point - did he look feel or do anything remotely intelligent?! Nope. Hey I am Weyland I have unlimited money resources or power Im off to meet some god like beings - shall I take any big weapons with me - naaa Ill take some little guns and a flame thrower then Ill walk up and stand next to a 8ft giant that might hate me even though Im almost dead and can barely walk im the most intelligent man in the universe :P :D ! Shall I try to work out some of the technology and use it with davids help - naaa! Shall I bring some serious back up - naa! Really bad film making (not that I hated everything about Prometheus don't get me wrong).

MemberOvomorphJun-30-2013 8:24 PMI watched it again in April.
It became my all-time favorite film.
Why? Because it offers me a universe both awe-inspiring and menacing. I don't care for harmless, juvenile fantasies.
Its most evident qualities descend from its originator, the masterpiece "Alien". There is mystery, there is horror, there are strong and relatable characters, there is convincing scientific speculation and serious underlying themes.
Of course it could be more perfect... But if it were, would it really be as maddeningly fascinating?

As the crew exit their vehicles the first time, the camera pans up from the base of the pyramid, with entrances, to the top. Shaw says "Prometheus do you see this?". HALF WAY UP I freeze the pan and there are 4 horizontal windows side by side. There are upper floors in the pyramid. Interesting.
