Who knows.. from what i looked at into the movie, was these Worms are well Space Worms but maybe are similar to Earth Worms..   and they can regrow their body parts.. like a Worm Can.

The Black Goo, infected the Worms with Xeno related DNA, passed on Xeno traits (Acid Blood) while Evolving the Organisms best natural Traits (Regeneration)

Maybe the Engineers had stolen the Goo or re-weaponized it from something stolen...

It could be they was tasked with using the Goo to Sacrifice themselves by command of the Hierarchy, the Engineers or a Faction then rebelled against this like the Igigi did against the Annunaki....   

They then chose to re-engineer the Goo to create something to use on their Creators and their creators Chosen Children?

I appreciate this is the second thread which has discussed the hand. Two things occur to me :-

1) If you tense your own hand there are definitely similarities between the bone structure of the mould and a human hand but much larger.

2) The curious pen scratch could be an stick emblem for a hand then N0/1.

If there is as I expect a key transition in Noomi's story which is connected to the pathway of the "evolving creature", we maybe looking at part of it.   

Protagonist/Antagonist Redemption. Only a year to wait ! 

The proportions are in % ratio if compared to human to belong to something 8ft tall.

Which is what typically a Xeno grows upto... off course they may have elongated hands but the other dimensions such as width of the hand would make it 8ft still
