MemberFacehuggerMay 20, 2017I just saw this post from a reviewer and it made me laugh that Covenant was last. Personally, I put Covenant tied with Resurrection and Prometheus with the AVP2, then AVP last.
Can't really recommend it even when it could just be a throw-away Alien film to watch on Netflix in a few months. Maybe they'll have the non- ultimate-extended-special-director's cut that the studio meddled with to see. Now THAT, I would've rather seen.

Final thoughts: Since I did just watch (now) all 8 films, here's how I'd rank them:
1. Aliens (Director's Cut)
2. Alien (Theatrical Cut)
3. Alien3 (Director's Cut)
4. Prometheus
5. Alien: Resurrection (Theatrical Cut)
6. Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem
7. Alien vs. Predator
8. Alien: Covenant
AVP and AVPR don't count. They suck anyways.
6: Alien Resurrection
Was a parody of the alien saga, had one dimensional characters, fun dialogue and serious story don't mix, completely unnecessary story, and you don't need to even watch this movie in the first place.
5: Alien 3
I actually liked Alien 3 and thought it was a good conclusion to the the Alien trilogy (shouldn't have been a quadrilogy). However, it's depressing tone, indistinguishable characters, bad blue screen effects, and the choice to kill off Hicks and Newt (spoilers) at the very beginning just worsened the movie.
4: Prometheus
Unlike a lot of people, I loved Prometheus and I thought it was a risky move for the franchise that payed off pretty well. That doesn't mean it's a perfect movie as there are numerous plot holes, with only some being answered in its sequel, stupid decisions being made by professionals, and alien creatures that I thought were cool, but aren't even related to the normal xenomorph, as shown in Alien Covenant. It is one of most stunning visual movies of the franchise and the soundtrack is excellent.
3: Alien
The original classic of the franchise, Alien works perfectly as a suspense horror movie and the characters are great, however, the soundtrack being almost gone from the movie, along with the scare factor being reduced substantially on repeat viewings lowers it down.
2: Alien Covenant
My expectations were very low for this movie as a lot of people said it was just mediocre, but I was pleasantly surprised by this film. Alien Covenant is breathtaking with its locations and visual effects, on par with Prometheus, and the soundtrack is a great homage to Alien and Prometheus. I really liked the way of how the xenomorphs were created and the David and Walter conversations were great. The neomorphs were also an amazing addition to the species and is probably second only to the classic xenomorph. The characters are still stupid, but are also more likable, being married couples.
1: Aliens
Aliens is the perfect sequel to Alien going from suspense to action in the horror genre. Although the xenomorphs lose some of their terror, being killed so quickly, their huge hive mind and the addition of the Alien Queen makes up for that. The characters are probably the best they've ever been and the story is great.

1. Alien (Theatrical Version)
2. Aliens (Director's Cut)
3. Prometheus
4. Alien: Covenant/Alien3 (Theatrical Version)
[Like them equally for different reasons]
5. Alien: Resurrection
GARBAGE PILE
Throw Away 1. Alien vs. Predator
Throw Away 2. Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem
1. Alien (still stands as one of the greatest sci-fi masterpieces of all time)
2. Aliens (comic-book-y action film "dumbing down" of the ideas presented in the first film but still a great ride overall)
3. Prometheus (the opposite of Aliens: a great, engrossing exploration of the more truly creepy ideas behind the original which the sequels almost entirely ignored)
4. Alien 3 (fantastic, courageous punch-in-the-gut plot worthy of the best horror cinema with what is arguably the best production design of the series)
5. Alien: Covenant (great performances and production design with a weak plot and thoroughly uninspiring creatures)
6. Alien Resurrection (some compelling ideas murdered by comically bad execution)
7. AvP (occasionally watchable)
8. AvP: R (seriously, wtf)
I’m just going to throw in a couple of non-alien films to show where I’m setting my bar level and put things into context.
1 Alien
2 Aliens
3 Event Horizon
4 Alien Covenant
5 Alien 3
6 Prometheus
7 Alien Resurrection
7 AVP
8 MAC and me
9 AVPR
1. Aliens
2. Alien
3. Alien 3
4. Prometheus
5. Alien: Resurrection
6. Alien vs. Predator
7. Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem
8. [RESERVED]
9. Alien: Covenant
I can't understand how anyone can rank Covenant high. Not only it added inconsistency and confusion to aliens, black goo and engineers story. On top of that it's a plain bad movie in general:
1) characters are dim and dumb (except for David and Walter, thanks to Fassbender, but what about others?)
2) story borrows many elements from previous movies
3) it's supposed to be scary but it's not
Amazing that I see Covenant beating Alien or Aliens lol.
Personally, I liked AVPR than AVP but they filmed it too dark. Again, the Assembly cut of Alien3 raised the bar on the film. And the acting, character development and scenes are way better than Covenant.
Fincher knows how to film a movie and his Se7en proved it.
Alien ( King that will not be dethroned)
Aliens ( Queen that supports her King admirably)
Alien Covernant ( Prince that will never be king )
Prometheus ( Princess, but a 3rd in line sibling )
Alien 3 ( Senior MP that will never be royalty )
Resurrection ( The court Jester )
AvP ( Theives locked in the Castle Dungeon )
I would move Covenant to the bottom and list it as "The Black Plague" or "Maggots That Ate The Thieves In The Castle Dungeon" The rest I would leave just as it is.
@joylift - I assume your skipping the Covenant party at the Castle later?
Rumour has it, David is playing the flute all night...
Goddamn Tropics in here No, I would't miss it. I'll get vaccinated and the maggots can be collected and sold to fishermen as bait :-)
