Lawrence of Arabia

The opening between David and Weyland, the interaction between Walter and Daniels, the back burster, the mouth burster (that had to hurt!), the Neomorphs, the reveal of Shaw's fate (I actually enjoyed it, sad for Shaw but the grimness was fitting), "I'll do the fingering" flute scene, the first chestburster, and seeing the Protomorph in action! There's more but these are the highlights for me, what's yours?

Good topic!

For me my favorite scenes are:

1. When Daniels finds the sketches and is all "What did you do to her?" and David is all "Exactly what I'm going to do to you." I also liked how she sounded so sad when David said Walter had "left this vale of tears", because she actually has feelings for Walter.

2. Captain Oram's death is actually a pretty amazing scene. Like, Captain Oram literally sticks his tongue way out, and is convulsing violently on the ground for like a full minute, while David fawns over the baby xeno. Like, re-watch that scene and just focus on Oram, it's pretty awesome (I mean, from a horror movie stand point!)

3. The scene where Karine is trapped in the med-bay with Ledward and the backburster is pretty intense. "Ferris you f***!"

4. LOVE the scene at the end where everything seems so nice and happy-endy, then Daniels realizes it's David and not Walter.

(It reminds of the time I went for minor surgery but started having a panic attack at the last moment, and they put me under anesthetic while I was literally hyperventilating.)

5. I'm also a big fan of the scene a few seconds after, when David plays his favorite jam and then goes to inspect his highly expendable new toys - the 2,000 peacefully sleeping colonists of the Covenant. >:-)

The first 15 minutes was pretty good at establishing the characters.

The backburster scene

David "reveal" scene, it wasn't a twist, everyone expected it, but it's still pretty dark.

Captain Oram's death was so brutal, I felt for the guy. "What do you believe in David?" "Creation." *gore intensifies* XD

The Medbay scene was so tense and heart breaking, I felt for Ledward having to have a creature burst out your back like that after your health deteriorates so quickly. When Karine hugged him I felt her pain too.

The ending was the greatest, yeah if you pay attention you could see the twist but I think that was intentional, but the fact the bad guy WON. That was so dark and yeah, he's got all these play things now. >:-) Enter the gates of Valhalla!

@Lawrence of Arabia

Very true on all counts! You've got to feel pretty bad for Oram, he gets his first command and everything goes completely to pot in the absolute worst way imaginable!

Karine hugging Ledward was super believable to me. My sister was all "Why would you hug someone with a probably contagious alien disease??" I was like "Because he was suffering and she couldn't do anything else to comfort him?" Very believable and heartbreaking! Well written!

True story, the first time I saw the movie, I was in the bathroom during the David/Walter fight scene. As a result, I completely did not see the twist coming. I 100% believed that was Walter, so, I was as surprised as Daniels, lol.

Oram felt it was God's doing that made him Captain and it was same faith that guided him to Planet 4. It's a shame he lives in such a nihilistic world.

That scene with Karine and Ledward was so powerful. She probably figured him throwing up on her and Ferris locking her in that there was no point for worrying about being infected since she was already being treated as such.

David is worse than Satan, and that's a good thing. He's such an interesting character even in Prometheus, you feel for him for being cast by humans as nothing more than a tool when he is much more than that. Fassbender knocks it out of the park.

@Lawrence of Arabia

Yes, tragically Oram's faith and optimism DID NOT pay off for him, in the cold vacuum of space...

Have you read the novelization? I found Oram's faith and final sentiments expressed in the novel even more intriguing. I tried to start a thread about it a while back, but it never took off.

From the book :"'In the dream I met our Lord, our Creator. And he was so kind and forgiving, like when I was a kid.' David pursed his lips and looked thoughtful. 'You don't believe that anymore?' Oram made an effort to shrug. One shoulder barely moved. 'I guess we all grow up.'"

(Then Foster's elegant descriptions of chestburster gore ensue)

I'm not a Christian (but even in my belief system, a person's thoughts at the time of death are significant) so I do not know what constitutes blasphemy in the Christian doctrine. I wondered how a person of Oram's faith would have regarded his final words and their affect on his afterlife.

Either way, it struck me as sort of significant!

@Ati

Lol! I suspect it's just that - we're of the type who enjoy emotions and aren't too particular about which ones.

I can never be certain of whether "interesting" is a complement, but I'll take what I can get! So, thanks! :D

Great topic!

But you all pretty much explained the exact favorite scenes as mines and are much more eloquent at explaining so LOL

I really enjoyed that anytime something ominous was about to happen you heard that eerie sound playing in the background. Especially when they first encounter the pathogen and hell ensues! LOL

Truth be told.. I really cannot think of anything I did not like about AC!

 However, do I wish there was more explained and shown? YES!

Great topic and looks like Alien Covenant is not such a bad movie. I haven't seen it yet but I was more than pissed off by the negativity of some who wanted something else. I hope it will still be in theaters in August when I'll be back ashore. Thank you guys for keeping this forum alive.

Aww, double thanks!!! :D I really don't know what I would have done if I hadn't found this awesome community, full of all you fun folks who like to share and read ideas about AC!

...I guess I probably would have spent my summer explaining my opinions on AC to my houseplant, while occasionally performing dramatic readings of selections from the novel <_<

@RZA

Good point, the sound effects were very well done! I heard somewhere that there is this type of sound that human beings have a primeval aversion to, which will invoke an innate sense of dread - it is the sound predatory cats like tigers and lions make.

It is my understanding that horror movie makers use a similar sound in their musical scores to evoke a similar sense of dread! How clever is that!?

I agree RZA, that there was nothing to dislike in AC. I loved it so much! But, if you want more explained, you will really love the book! Any questions you may have will be elegantly resolved! :D

Don't listen to the haters, they just don't understand the lonely perfection of Ridley Scott's dreams.

You will REALLY enjoy the movie, I highly recommend the book, too!

VivisectedEngineer 'just found a CRASHED SPACE-SHIP THEMED ESCAPE ROOM in my city!!!'

Isn't that in Budapest? :D

SuperAlien

MemberXenomorphJun-27-2017 4:13 PM

Ati I'm myself on a ship :) at sea. And I can understand better some foolish reactions of the crew when stepping into unknown territories. You can't imagine how many people would actually look into an opening ovomorph after months of being confined on a vessel. That can change your behaviour dearly.

@Ati

Lol, I don't doubt there's one in Budapest, but that's not where I am :) I think escape rooms are catching on fast, world-wide!

But oh my gosh, am I ever looking forward to my birthday! Booked the escape room today, and I'm in the midst of getting everyone's shirt size, so we can all wear our Covenant T-shirts!!

The one thing I'm having a bit of a quandary with is the cake... I'm vegan, so my cake needs are a little specialized. Normally when I need cakes for my classroom parties, I commission one from a vegetarian baker friend who goes to my temple.

...But I can't envision myself asking a sweet and pious Krishna-Bhakta to bake and offer to Krishna a cake shaped like a person with a Xenomorph bursting out the chest... >_<

Oram looking into the ovomorph seemed completely believable to me. I mean...it's not like he's every seen an Aliens movie before...

VivisectedEngineer Thanks, I am sure I will enjoy it. I'll buy the blueray too. It's good not only haters post here because I almost logged out from the forum with some David like feelings. And they are not really haters, I am sure they will admit liking the movie after few more trials. We are all from the same Alien Univers. Long live Ridley!

Happy birthday! Many returns of the day and many more good Alien movies to come.

Going to get one of those tshirts when I return home.

You guys are wonderful, glad to have found like minds who appreciate lonely perfection of Ridley Scott's dreams. ;) I felt the A:C was a good sequel to Prometheus which really set the stage for things to come. I can't wait for Awakening!

Ati I hope I won't be here till September or I might do what you suggest.

There must still be some estival screening somewhere for me, I was waiting 5 years for this movie.

@Ati

LOL! If either David OR Walter (Or both!) showed up at my party...I would be so ecstatic as to not even question the impossibility of it. (And woe be unto any of my other party guests who dare question it!!! <_<)

My only request is that, should I (God forbid) find myself a casualty of a little creative genetic engineering, may I at least have the opportunity to make my passing as theatrical as Captain Oram's!

Going to have to think about this one and get back to you all lol

Bit Tired... so have a think... but  think a lot of the scenes potentially had a lot going for them, they was just not executed as good as could have been or fleshed out as good as could have been... like the Novel for instance.. but this is a Problem with Movies and especially ones where the Producing Companies and Execs want to get the Story/Plots Told within a limited shooting time.

I am sure a 3 hour Shoot would have allowed for the detail as the Novel had..

The movie had a number of things going for it, sadly execution and how it came across on screen did not do these as much justice, compared to reading them from a book and imagining how they would look.

The Movie from Start to After David Arrived to Save them from the Neomorph i felt was pretty good, Sadly the rest just did not have the time spent Budget wise or execution and screen time wise to highlight the Plots and Ideas as well as could have been.

so while it had flaws and a bit of disappointment... i can totally understand most of those limitations, the movie really did need a extra 45 Minutes and surely also a extra $50M Budget.

@Ati To that I say, this movie could be a LOT worse. I'm not sure what people were expecting outside the obvious Shaw and David go to Planet 4 and answer all the questions but that's not as exciting and interesting as what went down in Covenant imo But I guess I'm easy to please xD

@BigDave
While I enjoyed what we got, I do agree, certain things did need to be fleshed out more and YES a bigger budget. Hopefully the 20mins that was cut flesh out the movie and I'm looking forward to the commentary.

THANK YOU!!! :D

And yes! Shri Krishna always plays the flute! He doesn't look anything like the Engineers though, lol. Krishna's complexion is the color of the night sky, between the starts - the color of the universe. :)
