RUMOR: James Cameron working on prequel to ALIENS?
Chris
AdminEngineerMay-28-2019 5:51 PMGet ready... A fresh rumor has entered the mill. According to Luis Nostromo, a few of the cast from James Cameron's 1986 Alien sequel ALIENS were all at dinner together recently, where talk of Cameron returning to the Alien universe came up. According to Luis, along with @alienuniverso and @thunderkitty, James Cameron is currently working on a prequel (not sequel) to ALIENS... Not only that, he reportedly wants to bring Sigourney Weaver back...
Only problem I see with this is a prequel to ALIENS already exists... it's called ALIEN. Not to mention, Ridley Scott recently revealed that he is working on a new Alien film for Disney right now - so it's highly unlikely Cameron would be involved with a separate title in the Alien universe at the same time.
To be honest, the Sigourney coming back angle is getting tiresome. I would be disappointed if this was the route Disney took for Alien. We've seen now that nostalgia does nothing for box office performance now. Alien needs a fresh start. We need Prometheus 2.
Dark Nebula
StaffNeomorphMay-28-2019 6:27 PMA prequel to Aliens, hmmm... The only way I see that could happen is a film that takes place between Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986). Something like Alien: River of pain or Aliens: Fire and stone. The only reason I read the river of pain was that I was extremely curious about what Newt's parents got to see inside of the derelict, and I was surprised to read there was a battle between the xenomorphs and the engineers inside.
Aliens: fire and stone is more interesting from my point of view, in it during the xenomorph outbreak on LV-426 a group of survivors escape and crashland on LV-223. There they try to survive from xenomorphs (that got onboard), and other black goo mutations. One scientist got interested in the black goo and tried to learn about it, and about the engineers.
Based on some of the comments by James Cameron regarding Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, he seems interested in the Engineer mythos. If that prequel film ever happens, I just hope Engineers make an appearance.

MemberTrilobiteMay-28-2019 9:12 PMIt's only a rumor but I will bite. I think Dark Nebula makes a great point.
Also, Isolation was before Aliens or could have been around the same time- I forgot the time lines.

MemberTrilobiteMay-29-2019 12:28 AMFincher could revisit the wooden world but I think he is still at least a little upset over A3.

MemberDeaconMay-29-2019 1:20 AMThis is only a Rumor and if there is some Element of Truth then it could be a case of Misinterpretation, i think it would be more likely that Cameron is pushing for a Aliens Sequel this would be more Easier, because you could set it 25-30 years latter and bring back the Gang without using CGI or Time-Travel etc.
I am Only a Fan of seeing Miss Weaver in a Alien 5 as in sequel to Alien Resurrection, but IF a Alien 3 Reboot is made then i would accept it as a Alternative Path and give it a chance on its own Merits.
A Aliens Prequel that is to feature Ripley would be.. well Ridiculous if you ask me... whats the point? it would conflict the Franchise maybe.... well we did have that One Novel that was about Ripley set between Alien and Aliens, i have not read it as i think its a SILLY idea.... and then you have to use CGI!
It cant be a Reboot of Alien..... as Alien is mentioned in Aliens and the crew of the Nostromo are shown (well some) in the briefing between Ripley, Burke and Company Executives.
HOWEVER.......
What if this is a Alien Isolation Sequel?
Considering the Games are not quite Movie Canon... but could be....
If we go by Amanda Ripley as seen in James Cameron's movie ALIENS, then Sigourney Weaver at present does look a lot like the Amanda Ripley from ALIENS, but without CGI Overlay she would only be able to play a Amanda set what 5-10 years prior to ALIENS?
But i guess such a Time-Frame could cover her Death and show that it was related to events after Alien Isolation in a Conspiracy the Company wanted her DEAD!
Otherwise.... doing a Prequel to ALIEN were clearly Sigourney Weaver has aged 30+ years (could pass for 20 years older than in Alien/Aliens... but your not gonna get her looking like she is in her Early 30's without LOADS of CGI. So i think this would not make any sense.
To play a Amanda Ripley in her 50's i think Miss Weaver could pull that off with not much CGI etc, to pull of a Amanda Ripley in her 60's would be Easy. But to play a Ellen Ripley in her early 30's would just not work really.
Unless the CGI is exceptional.... but this is expensive and only ideal for Short Cameo's and you can have the chance of it being Shocking rather than looking Realistic.

MemberPraetorianMay-30-2019 5:16 PMIs it purely coincidental that JC is supposedly working on a new ALIEN movie, right at the time when reports of another prequel from Ridley, are being reported?
I had the exact same feeling when Covenant was in the works & Blomkamp started posting his ALIEN 5 concepts. Then Sigourney, JC- (it's gangbusters!) Michael Biehn etc came out of the woodwork to promote the idea.
I guess I'm just a conspiracy nut!

MemberPraetorianMay-30-2019 5:19 PMAnyway, with is it 5 AVATAR sequels, or however many, in the works, plus a new Terminator, how in the hell would Jim Cameron have the time to work on an ALIENS prequel!?

MemberDeaconMay-30-2019 5:57 PMIt could be that the Aliens Prequel, is a misinterpretation and its a Aliens Sequel? Who knows... just rumor at the moment, lets hope it stays that way (regarding Prequel).
CONSPIRACY?
I do think that Blomkamps Alien 5 statement/release of Concept, could certainly contributed to FOX deciding to go for more of a Alien Covenant, than what a Prometheus sequel would have been prior (Steer Away from ALIEN and Xenomorphs).
As Blomkamps ideas as NOT any Official Project he was maybe not Restricted to what he had put out there..
By that Ridley Scott maybe could not put some Concept of his Alien Covenant Sequel and Information out there because it was Part of a Official Project that was under some way, that was then Put on Hold!
I wonder how many of his Ideas have been used for his Raised by Wolves TV Series? OR indeed the Hennessy XO Commercial he made ;)

MemberTrilobiteMay-30-2019 6:04 PMIt doesn't matter as long as it doesn't mess with A3 and Resurrection.
BigDave
MemberDeaconMay-30-2019 8:01 PMCertainly... but it comes down to what Disney want to do, and if they give us a Blomkamp Style Alien 3 Reboot, we dont have to go and see it or consider it Canon ;)
I think the Prequels need Concluding... if Disney feel that following David is not going to work out, then they could go to LV-223 as surely the Company would send a Mission there after receiving the Advent Video Message off David.
Here they can cater for the Alien/Aliens Fans and even give us a Xenomorph like Beast and Clues that could make Davids Creation of the Xenomorph by no means Certain!
Another Avenue for Blomkamps Ideas would be to have them carried out in a Movie set after ALIENS, but one where they do-not bring back Ripley and Co.... introduce NEW Characters, explore the Xenomorph but also show attempts to Evolve it and Harness it in other ways than just to use as a Weapon via the Eggs.
I saw Potential in David and the Engineers and the Plot of Prometheus, but with Alien Covenant and its Disappointment i have concerns we wont be seeing much of either in context to any Philosophical stuff or Chariots of the Gods/Creators.
Such potential beyond the Usual Alien Franchise Ideas/Tropes.
Where we just see these Xenomorphs unleashed either as a Single Beast that Hunts down Unarmed/Unprepared Humans in Confined Spaces Horror Flick.. Or Multiple Xenomorphs doing battle with Humans with Guns in a Shoot-em-up Flick!
Introduce Engineers in this Kind of Style and would they be much different to HOW the Predators are in the AVP Franchise? (by that 7-8ft Technically Advanced Species that go around using their Superior Strength and Technology to KICK Human/Xenomorph ASS!).

MemberTrilobiteMay-30-2019 10:34 PMI have a feeling whatever happens in theaters will not be a block buster. Fans like us will probably see whatever comes out but it wouldn't be enough if Covenant is an indicator. Some movies just aren't meant to have mass appeal, and it seems the new Godzilla might be experiencing that.
The Alien franchise probably won't make a lot of money and it makes me wonder why it would continue. Big bucks? Probably not. Passion for the franchise, art and all that? Possibly for folks like whom worked on the IGN shorts.
That might mean a back to basics meat and spuds approach- a haunted house in space but with something fresh- IDK what it would be.

Oh c'mon! You really don't understand? Philosophy, myths, chariots of the Gods, Alien, Queen - themes doesn't matter. Writing - does. Maybe you mean a philosophy with stupid characters? Ridley's stories incompatible with smart characters? Whatever, I think - Disney go with good and smart characters.
I know - we all want Blomkamp's Alien 5. I'm sure - Cameron will be a producer, not a director. Blomkamp can do it.

MemberDeaconMay-31-2019 7:19 AM"Oh c'mon! You really don't understand?"
What is there NOT to understand? Your point is Valid, in that regardless of ideas, you need someone to WRITE a Solid Story then the right Director and Actor to Execute the Story. Sometimes a Character is only as Good as they are Written and how they are Influenced to Perform that Character by the Director.... Prometheus was flawed, it had some silly moments... Alien Covenant not so, but the Characters where FLAT! Looking at John Logan i dont have much Confidence in his approach, it seems he is maybe not suited to this kind of Franchise.
But back to your reply, Certainly Good Characters and Good Directing is required, Visually Ridley Scott is Exceptional (few Flaws) but sometimes he is Maybe not the Best at getting Characters to Shine. (apart from a few) I dont think he is as bad as some make out though.
And so even if we had a Gangbusters Alien 5 lets Reboot Alien 3 Plot.... or even a like the Many Aliens Comics like Plot, if these also DONT get Good Characters that are Executed then what you have is basically no more better than the Starship Trooper Sequels with Xenomorphs!
"I know - we all want Blomkamp's Alien 5."
Depends on WHO we are... those who maybe like the Action of AVP and Alien Resurrection and Love it in Aliens would maybe be all up for this... but NOT every Fan is excited about a Discover Egg/Eggs/Queen, lots of Chest Busting, lots of running and shooting at Xenomorphs kind of Movie.
Some will like such a thing and i think there is a Market for such and i feel that YES you could do this 1-2 more times before you also have to have something different... 3 Alien Movies that are like Aliens is not gonna work... 3 Alien Movies that are like Alien 3 are not going to work, you have to have a Balance, so a Action Movie, then a Horror One and then one thats like a Cross Between a Prometheus/Alien Resurrection in terms of Plot/Style would work.
Some Fans would not be interested in seeing a Bring Back Ripley, and maybe Fans have to accept in Alien 3 people Died, like some Fans have to accept that from Aliens on-wards Eggs come from Queens. So some Fans would not like to see a Alien 3 get Rebooted.... like i am sure some Fans would HATE it if say AC was a HIT and eventually we Rebooted Aliens and the Queen!
Whats done has been done.....
But some Fans would love to see a Aliens 2, Aliens 3 and Aliens 4 which by then we have a 80+ year Old Ripley who then either needs the Exo-Suit that Peter Weyland used in Prometheus.
Like this...
Or she permanently is attached to this.
On a serious note....
I would welcome another Alien Movie by Blomkamp and Cameron that uses some of their ideas, that is more Action, but that DOES-NOT resurrect Dead Characters or Conflict prior Movies!

MemberPraetorianJul-01-2019 2:47 PMIf James Cameron is working on an Aliens prequel then it could be a film adaptation of Alien: River of Pain or Alien: Out of the Shadows or both.
Ellen Ripley Sees a Buried City and a Crashed Alien Ship
The novels are top notch but one exciting thing about Ellen Ripley in Alien: Out of the Shadows is this. below.
“‘It’s a ship,’ he said.
‘What?’ Ripley gasped. She hadn’t even considered that possibility. Buried almost a mile beneath the planet’s surface, surely this couldn’t be anything but a building, a temple of some sort, or some other structure whose purpose was more obscure.'”
Alien: Out of the Shadows, page 167.
“The entire left half of the exposed surface might have been a wing, curving down in a graceful parabola, projections here and there seemingly swept back for streamlining.”
Alien: Out of the Shadows, page 168.
A lot of this sounds familiar and could be a tie-in to Alien: Covenant but this could also signal an entire new direction for the films.
