CharzaAlien: Romulus 2 NewsNew Perspectives: Devising the new Xenomorph for Alien: Covenant

I partially agree red0guy/IgnorantGuy that some of the decisions in the original Alien are also questionable. Fifield and Milburn however have absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever. They behave strange and unsympathetic, with Milburn being a cocky know it all sceptic, and Fifield just being an allround jerk all the time.

One of the key elements of scientific thinking is having an open mind about a subsequent  subject and then trying to proof whether a certain theory is correct or not by subjecting your theory to certain tests. The Milburn and Fifield characters we get in the movies doesn't fit that profile at all. They aren't open to the idea that ancient aliens might have had some influence in human evolution and especially Milburn immediately discards the theory. When the Prometheus successfully finds remnants of the Engineers on LV-223, and it is proven that there are other things out there, both him and Fifield just freak out, because Mr "Biology" and Mr "in love with rocks" according to their assessment have nothing to contribute in the "Gigantic dead body arena". This just made no sense at all.
I don't necessarily question Fifield losing his bearings within the structure getting the 2 of them lost after separating ways with the others in the team, since that might very well have been an interference issue with the equipment, though the movie could have done a better job actually establishing why Fifield and Milburn had no access to the map, while at first Fifield clearly had his pups mapping out the structure and giving him readings on his wrist computer. I agree that Shaw and Holloway also make some pretty poor decisions within the movie, but Fifield and Milburn just blew my mind in the cinema in terms of stupid behaviour.

Now with the Nostromo crew it is a little different. Yes perhaps some things could have been handled way better, but part of what happened to them is largely because they were indirectly sabotaged by their own android. They simply had no clue of what was out there, and at least had some regard for sensible safety protocols. Heck if Ripley was not just overruled by Ash a lot of things would not have happened.

So yes, I agree that questionable decisions and strange motivations have always been part of the Alien world, but the Nostromo crew still acted way more sensible than the Prometheus crew ever did.

To play the Devil's advocate maybe you are all wrong, it's 100 years before an Alien Remake. Even Arthur C Clark pushed forward the dates in his later Odyssey novels.

Just for you I change my handle, because you were so insightful. And sorry I'm no Alien fan however, I only like Prometheus and the first part of Alien 79,  while should have the xenomorph  stayed in his cameo from Prom.

@Charza

I regret apologizing.

I find the hate towards Milburn and Fifield exaggerated because the story after they f**k up does not go into people are killed one by one. While the cleverness of people on the Nostromo is exagerated... it's hard to imagine that at least Dallas, Kane, Ripley, and Lambert would not have some form of higher education and as such they were not all simply space truckers. But Kane is plain stupid, Dallas makes very questionable decisions in more than one occasion (they maybe explained in the novel, but in the movie) and Ripley wastes time on the cat.

The so called stupidity is part of the Alien movie formula and it won't go away if the execs dictate.

CharzaAlien: Romulus 2 NewsEditorial - Ridley Scott's StarBeast and James Cameron's Xenomorph may not be the same creature?

I remember this article from almost a year ago:

https://www.alien-covenant.com/news/engineers-did-not-create-humanity-or-xenomorph

I still think this information might me close to the truth. Those on paradise were not engineers, but another link within the chain, a chain now disrupted by David. After Alien Covenant people rapidly jumped to the conclusion that the Engineer storyline was ditched, and David was the ultimate creator of the creature, and ender of this civilisation.

With a space faring species like the engineers, who are possibly seeders of galaxies, the possibilities are kind of endless. We should remain open to the idea that Alien Covenant was never meant to be a full exposition and certainly wasn't meant to be an origin story.

@BigDave

Disney's takeover of Fox scares me a little to be honest.
If we take a look at their treatment of the Marvel and Star Wars franchises, things can turn out to be quite grim.

Alien movies should not be mass produced creature flicks. In my mind Alien movies should explore themes of the unknown, and be thoughtful in that process. The fact that Prometheus and Alien Covenant are criticized and ultimately underperformed in their cinematic runs, are not because of lack of potential, it is because of lack of execution. Both movies had terrific scripts with lots of intriguing details and several very real connections to the original Alien Mov. Alas a lot of those very specific details also ended up on the cutting room floor, in an attempt to make the movies more obscure or as the creators put it "open for interpretation".
One of the things the original Alien did so well is utilizing their characters. Although none of the characters had elaborate back stories when you got into the movies, they at least behaved like real human beings in a certain situation. You also learned more about them as the movie went on, and that is why Ripley for example has such lasting appeal. Prometheus and Alien Covenant both suffer greatly because the characters don't behave like normal real humans would ever behave. Sore examples are goons like Milburn and Fifield, who are the most unconvincing scientists ever put on screen. I think the only character in Prometheus that actually has a hint of the raw realness that made the original Alien work so well is the character of Janek.

Alien Covenant continued this trend of stupid people in space, and the real shame here is, that within the novelization these characters actually don't do stupid and inconsiderate things. a lot of the characterization and motivations have been altered or don't get context within the scope of the movie, and it suffers because of that.

With Disney franchises we have seen consistently bad characterisation in multiple of their franchises. Especially Star Wars the Last Jedi has now become an infamous movie because of the badly written script and totally forced Mary Sue type characters. I don't want the Alien franchise to suffer the same fate.

If Disney decides to can and shelf the franchise, Ridley Scott won't be able to work on it any longer. The man is 80 years old already. But is Ridley truly the man to continue this legacy? So far he has not been able to recreate the greatness that was the original Alien. He never lost his ability to create great visuals and compose visually stunning movies, but with all his hefty ideas, he has shown an increasing disconnect from understanding human motivations. The strange thing is that it only seems to plague his efforts within the "Alien" series so there must be some other factors within the production as well for this to be the endresult.

It is however interesting to ponder the possibilities of what a movie in the Alien universe would be like if it was made by a younger visionary director like Christopher Nolan or Denis Villeneuve.

@Lawrence of Arabia

Well no need to be sour towards red0guy, he already admitted that he might have exaggerated, and thus went too far. I'm sure we all respect your opinion although not necessarily agreeing with it.

SuperAlienAlien: Covenant ForumThe Xenomorph - Asexual and bloodsucking?

There is a theory that the biomechanical Xenomorph's acid blood powers him up like a battery. It doesn't need any food or other sources of energy.

The neomorph does not have acid blood so it might need some nourishment to keep going.

Regarding the reproductive cycle, if we can answer the question of how the eggs are made all becomes clear. If xenomorphs are just bio weapons they don't really need to multiply themselves. But then, what was the meaning of egg morphing from Alien DC?

IMHO the queen is just some bogus concept of Cameron, good for AVP type sequels.

Reply
SuperAlienAlien: Covenant ForumNo acid for blood...

David told Oram:

"The pathogen took so many forms and was extremely mutable. Fiendishly inventive, in fact. The original liquid atomised to particles when exposed to the air. Ten years on, all that remains outside of the original virus are these gorgeous beasts. Patience is everything.

From the eggs came these parasites, shock troops of the genetic assault. Waiting for a host, entering the host, rewriting the DNA and ultimately producing,  well, these enviable unions. My beautiful bestiary."

David does not say how we get those eggs containing the motes. Are they a by product of the pathogen on the local flora? And if the motes rewrite the host's DNA the result should not have been a mutant host instead of a neomorph?

Another question is how come we don't see any hammerpedes on planet 4? Why the pathogen killed all the "meat" there while on Prometheus mutated the worms?

Why the heck didn't Holloway get a backburster after ingesting the pathogen? Is it a condition for the host's mutation to swallow the pathogen in its liquid state?

The neomorph clearly did not have acid blood as the one shot in the Cathedral was lying in a pool of blood...

Why can't you look at David like at an interesting but evil human character. He is behaving like one. He is not the kind of AI we have seen in othe films, like Terminator or Ex Machina or Chappie or Transformers.

David could tell an interesting story with the xenomorph by his side.

I'm not even terribly certain it's dementia. Those who work with him are quick to point out how good his health and fitness are despite his age.Admittedly that's a little different but still. My grandfather has dementia and this isn't the same.My opinion is that as it's been for a while now Ridley has his own very specific point of view and certainly doesn't give a damn about what Fans consider an accurate time line.Screen writer John Logan should be taken into consideration as well.Interestingly he's not some one interviewed in that book.

It seems no one dare say what I know we are all thinking is the most likely answer.

Most weekday mornings I catch the bus, of which an old man catches almost every day. This senior citizen is 81 years of age, pleasant and harmless, but he has a habit of repeating himself - in the same week he will often tell me the same stories a dozen times or more.

Ridley is 80 years old, is currently turning out more films per year than any other director and recently had to deal with his life-long friend, collaborator, and brother Tony Scott's suicide.

We have all seen Scott's contradictory statements and non-sensical outbursts, including and not limited to his blatant disregard towards Neill Blomkamp's proposed Alien sequel.

The blatant truth of the matter is that Scott is old, and showing early signs of age-related dementia. As such I would rather he step down, retire and be remembered with reverence rather than carry on directing and heading further down the downward spiral he is already set upon.

Maybe we could look at it from a technological point of view.   Maybe he meant the the technology on the Nostromo is so advanced and well thought out that it is still useful 100 years after A:C.  To me (and my general knowledge of the Nostromo), I say this explanation could be plausible.  I mean, we got a massive space ship hauling a refinery behind it.  People got pretty pissed when Ripley exploded it (and the Alien) to Hell.  I'm sure they wouldn't have been so pissed if it was low-tech (and not carrying many people's pensions).  I mean, the Nostromo is refining minerials with either zero-gravity or artificial gravity and is most likely not heating while traveling through the most unsurvivable environment (except for one animal that I know of).  The Nostromo might look low-tech, yet at the comment quoted which started this thread... it is a mining ship and is not on a scientific mission.  There is no need for all of the bells and whistles and the nice-to-look-at features we see on the Covenant.  The Nostromo knew what it was going to mine before it left Earth.

Plus, if we remember how big the Nostromo is and if we remember the construction process for the Covenant in the prequel book, I think we could assume that there aren't many mining ships out there.  The Nostromo could be one of a dozen.  Or maybe it is the first one paving the path for all later examples.  Either way, the technology of the Nostromo could possibly be the same even if it was built 100 years after A:C.

Yet, in all honestly, I like to think that Ridley has got a lot of things going in his life and he has to much to remember it all, especially with Fox trying to push Ridley in different directions.

The big question is, when did that interview happen?

Plus, who knows who wrote that in the page that was taken and posted on this thread.  It could've easily have been a typo by someone that is much better at making pretty looking pages to read then someone who worries about content.  Then, any publishing company proof reading it obviously could've have missed that detail since they're probably not checking for right information as long as it makes sense grammatically.

It is sad when we catch mistakes, yet it happens.  Sadly this one seems to do extra harm since Ridley does seem to change his mind (with no help from Fox either).

That would be "keep on topic" or don't "hijack the thread". Which I am guilty of both in numerous cases.

I guess I am erroring on the side of kids, from my perspective, apologies to all I have offended.  I wish all these 16 and 17 yo good luck with their relationships with mid-20 people who are at a completely different place in life.  It will probably work itself out a lot like the movie portrays it (I am guessing it goes bad..).  Like most of us, I don't want anyone (esp. young kids (</=18)) hurt or young adults in jail, and it seems uneeded to plant romanticized situations in widespread films that could result in this outcome.  Moving on.  Love Paxton.  So we have that in common.

For me, 'keep it classy' means don't derail a topic.

I haven't seen the movie so I don't have an opinion on it, but it's by James Ivory of Merchant Ivory Productions,

who have been making somewhat controversial movies

about both male and female's first sexual awakening, first love, forbidden love, since the 80's

(A Room with a View, Howard's End,The Remains of the Day),

and it looks to be geared more towards a European audience as the author of the book the movie is based on is Italian.

(Side note, the age of consent is 17 in many states, not all but quite a few.)

*Edit: Broke the text up because the code is broken and chris needs to fix it, otherwise half the text gets cut off, lol!

The term Classy, as a rule, is based on preconceived no-go zones for conversation, as to not offend.  That of course was not my intent, but I live in a (supposed) nation of laws, not feelings and emotions.  I was simply providing my unique legal based perspective shared by most that are domestic to my country.

I just think the writers were blind to the multinational audience when they launched this.  One more year of age on the main character and it's no issue.  Why invoke the drama?  It was probably intentional, drama for drama's sake.  And if the response to that is why should movie makers cater to one country or another, well it is either about making money or making a statement.  And in this case, in the US at this time, it seems like an odd statement to make.  That's all.  YMMV. it is a shame we cannot discuss topics via telepresence, as a lot gets lost in translation.

Some have indeed speculated that David could end up being the Space Jockey, even going back to prior to Prometheus, i even pondered that Weyland would Evolve David and transfer his Soul to David and so Weyland in Davids Evolved Body becomes the Space Jockey (this was based of the Trailer of the Engineer standing over Dr Shaw were we could see this being was clearly not tall) it ended up indeed just being the Engineer though in that scene.

You certainly have picked up on a few missing elements to get to ALIEN.

*Engineer Ship

*Thousands of Eggs

*Mechanical Elements of the Bio-Mechanical Xenomorph

Can we RULE out David being the Space Jockey?  i think its something we cant, and it would be a Huge Hubris for David in light of playing GOD.... but then this would also maybe imply David realizes the Error of his ways and attempts to Redeem himself?  But falls victim to his own Creation.

I am thinking the idea you propose would be that the Bio-Mechanical Beast Birthed from David Lays the Bio-Mechanical Xenomorph Eggs on the Derelict?

I think for sure David would be able to Pilot the Ship, we was not sure what the need for the Pilot Chair was in Prometheus as it appears the Ship can Fly itself once a Destination is placed, but maybe the Pilot Chair is some Guidance/Targeting System, this would work if we assume the Juggernaught could get to Earth in a short time.

Then we see in AC David is in the Cargo Hold when the Bombardment Starts, so maybe the Pilot Seat is not a Targeting System, it could be needed for take off and landing?  Who knows.

I think there is a good potential for the Bio-Mechanical Atheistic of the Xenomorph to come from Synthetic Material,   HOWEVER David is not Organic at all..... not in Prometheus but we dont know how much they have tinkered with his design for Covenant because the Prometheus Marketing Site was replaced.

But we can see WALTER appears to have some kind of Organic Components.. to a degree, and the Fire and Stone Comics introduced us to ELDEN a Synthetic Construct..... part Synthetic, part Organic and he became infected with the BLACK GOO and so maybe Walter is a SYNTHETIC CONSTRUCT or one could come into play in the next movie and be how the Xenomorph gains its Bio-Mechanical Aesthetic.

I cant see Fassbender playing a One Armed Android, and Walter Models have some Advancements.. and i think the Covenant Ship would have Spare Parts.. I think a Logical Plot Device has to show David Build a Walter and Transfer his SOUL to it..  If this WALTER is a Synthetic Construct, then indeed it would leave David maybe open to be infected by his own Creation.

If we take it as 100 years, then its a bit of a odd Comment.

"This Is not a grungy ship-this is a pioneer ship,on a scientific mission"

This must be regarding the Covenant and in regards to it NOT being Grungy like the Nostromo

".So by the time you get to the first Alien, you're maybe 100 years on from this, where they've now quite clearly become capable of actually digging and mining off the surface of planets."

This is the Odd Comment but we need to look at what COVENANT is about, its a Large Scale Colonization  Mission, to Explore a Charted Earth like World (Origae-6) and to attempt to Colonize it.

The next part must mean that by the time of ALIEN Mankind/Company have expanded to actually go around Mining Worlds across the Galaxy, now the Prometheus Viral Site shows that Weyland Industries had actually already  began Mining of worlds, many many years prior to even Prometheus. But this site has been taken down and replaced in what we can only assume is due to changing of some of the Background Information about the Company/Mankinds Ventures into Space and Technology at certain Time in the Time-Line.

So again i will have to assume its 10 years.... so RS is saying that by the time of Alien (year 2122) Mankinds Exploration of Space is not limited to the odd Scientific Expedition like Prometheus and Covenant but that we have not commissioned many Ships with more basic Purposes of merely Transporting Cargo and acting as a Tug for Deep Space Mining Operations.

So basically its like say how we had the Titanic and other Cruise Liners that are not as Basic a lay out as More Modern Fishing Boats, Cargo Ships and Tugs.

I would say its a TYPO i think we need to look at it Logically.

If we take this 100 years comment as Legit, then how does this work?  The Marketing/Viral for Prometheus indicates this was the year 2093 December when the Prometheus arrived, and even in the movie we are also shown this Date... even as far as the END when Dr Shaw tells us the year is Jan 1st 2094,   The Marketing for Alien Covenant and even in the movie we are shown its set 10 years after Prometheus.

So what ships are 100 years apart?  Prometheus and Nostromo?  Covenant and Nostromo?  The Prometheus being the OLDEST but looking the Technologically more Advanced/Pristine, while the Nostromo looks far less Advanced (this is due to Special Effects limitations 40 years ago).

So we are left with what.... the Covenant being 100 years over the Nostromo? So what the Nostromo was commissioned in the year 2004?    Or that the Nostromo is 100 years newer and so ALIEN is now set in the year 2204?

I think its more sense that what was meant was 10 years and not 100

Alien takes place nearly 18 years after Alien Covenant the Nostromo was refitted in the year 2116 so 11 years after the events of Alien CovenantDallas was given Command of the Nostromo in the year 2120  the rest of the crew join in the same year apart from ASH who is re-assigned in June 2121 as it arrives at Thedus

I would go even further when looking at the Sacrificial Goo being a Creation/Hybridization Tool

"sometimes to create, one must first Destroy"

David must have interpreted this from what he found out about the Engineers and LV-223, but if the Intention was to Create Xenomorph Type Organisms,  then why the Sacrificial Scene? Why not Program the Goo with Xenomorph DNA and give that to the Sacrificial Engineer?   Why not Sacrifice a Xenomorph/Deacon instead of a Engineer, unless this does not produce Organisms like the Xenomorph and they had to Evolve a World to have Engineer/Humanoid Life First and then use the Xenomorph Strain on us?

Thats a lot of Effort really, especially as we are shown Female Reproductive Organs can lead to Deacons, and eventually those Eggs, and also if a Xenomorph Queen can lay Eggs...  it just makes little sense to spend Millions of years to get Humans, to then Sacrifice them to the Black Goo to mutate them into Xenomorph like Organisms.

If this was the Purpose, why did the Engineers interact with us, teach us stuff? if we assume without the Engineers we would just be like Cave Men,  then surely dropping Black Goo in Cave Men would still give them the same Xenomorph like Results, indeed even earlier Pre-Man Primates.

Which brings us to the Star Maps dating back to 35'000 years ago, why leave a Map to a Outpost that has only ONE purpose which is Xenomorph related Parasitic Pathogen, why show us a Map to a Bio-Weapons Facility?  Did the Engineers plan this place for the Creation of the Black Goo 35'000 years ago with the intention to one day use it on us?

But then why wait 35'000 years, why leave us Star Maps at different intervals?  Did the Engineers Create and Experiment with the Black Goo 35'000 years ago, and if so HOW did they manage to Maintain/Control it for so long until 33'000 years latter?

Which brings me to Planet 4....

If those Engineers are aware of LV-223 and the Black Goo Pathogen, and more so if this has been the case for 35'000 years,  WHY did they not react with Fear when seeing the Returning Juggernaught?  WHY was there no Safeguards to Protect against the potential for a returning Ship?

*Maybe because when ships return to Planet 4 they NEVER contain the Bio-Weapon this is left on LV-223.

*Maybe because in their NAIVETY they could never comprehend any of their own Race every using the Weapon against them, or indeed Created Races ever being able to Travel the Stars?

*Maybe there are SAFEGUARDS the Docking Ship, and maybe something was released that caused the Engineers to appear to be Burnt in a attempt to Stop the Infection etc.

HOWEVER...

To me the City Plaza with the Hanger and the Buddah like Offering Statues Around it, all sound to me like this RACE take Pride in Self Sacrifice where a Chosen Sacrefice is seen as being Perfect Specimens to Seed their DNA to create Life on a New World....  These Engineers who are Chosen hold it as a Great Honor to be Chosen, they LIVE ON in the Life Created from their Sacrifice and maybe they get a Statue in their Honor Erected in the Plaza?

I therefore think the Juggernaughts are maybe a Evolution to the Tear Drop Ship in Prometheus, and instead of Dropping off a Engineer to Seed his DNA, they now instead Sacrifice the Engineers at some place so their DNA is collected into the Ampoules/Urns and these are dropped onto Worlds instead of the Sacrificial Scene.... were maybe more than ONE Engineer is Sacrificed so their DNA is dropped onto a World to offer more Genetic Diversity.

THIS^^^^ Fits more with the SPACE GARDENERS and would Explain why those Planet 4 Engineers Welcomed the Returning SEEDING Ship... its why Engineers left Star Maps to show us where WE came from because LV-223 is a Nursery/Green House where the Engineers Experiment/Evolve Life to a Satisfactory Level and then Plant them back to Worlds they Visit...

BUT something happened, something that involved what ever Origin was the Xenomorph DNA, the Engineers at least on LV-223 started to Worship the Parasitic Organism that was birthed from some Encounter/Creation and THEY saw this Organism as Potential and began to Experiment and Evolve it until they had Created the Mural Deacon, which they then Sacrificed to get the Black Goo.

These Engineers saw the Deacon DNA as more Perfect than Engineers and chose to EVOLVE Life on Earth (after being displeased with us) so that we would be UPGRADED to the Deacon DNA these Engineers saw as PERFECT..

"While there are base similarities between the two, the Sacrificial Goo and the Black Goo are not the same substance."

Indeed Gavin

The entire reply by you is exactly what i was pointing out and concluded when i saw Prometheus, that then reading Alien Engineers helped to make better sense of and so my interpretations matched what i latter read in Alien Engineers.   And so it was as i was saying the more they fiddle with the Goo/Ooze they seem to be taking something quite simple and making it more complex.

If we look at the MAIN Plot for Prometheus its not a Angry Alien Race of Engineers Creating Bio-Weapons... its about a Ancient Race of Humanoids who had adopted a Sacrificial Ritualistic way to SEED their DNA...   Even after AC, we have RS again refer to the Engineers as GARDENERS

And so if we look at this being their Agenda, and the Sacrificial Goo as the Tool to do this, then we can see this is a Tool that is used to Spread the DNA/Genomes of any Organism to then imprint their DNA into the Genome of other Organisms.

so Sacrificial Goo ==> Broken Down DNA that reforms/becomes a Mutagen that then passes on the Organisms DNA that was Sacrificed DNA onto other Organisms it comes into contact with.

So if a Sacrificed Engineer DNA, via this Mutagen obtained from the Sacrificial Scene infects say a Primate then the result is a Primate/Engineer Hybrid... if we say this is 50/50 Hybrid,  if we then infect this Hybrid with more of that Engineer DNA then it becomes a 75% Engineer 25% Primate Hybrid... but if this 50/50 Hybrid could mate with a Primate then it would be maybe what 75% Primate and 25% Engineer.

If we took this 50/50 Hybrid and introduced it to Sacrificial Goo, then the resulting Mutagen infects a WOLF then we would get a Hybrid thats 25% Engineer, 25% Primate and 50% WOLF

THIS ^^^ is how i saw the Sacrificial Goo, and its what i think Jon Spaights intentions was, which Alien Engineers appears to show us with the Nano Scarabs...   This means the Sacrificial Varient is a Tool to not only Spread DNA but to Manipulate and create Hybrids and its a case of multiple interactions of different Hybridization Attempts that lead to Mankind, likewise we see it was many attempts by David to get those Eggs, those Eggs containing Traits obtained by many Organisms he experimented on.

This seems to be the Original Idea, and Simple one.... before changes here and there...

Thus if we look at it the way Spaights Scarabs work, then the Urns of Black Goo must contain the Broken Down DNA of something related to the Xenomorph/Deacon that was obtained by using the Sacrificial Goo on them.... HENCE IMO  the Mural having a Sacrificial Pose (same pose the Engineer had taken in Alien Engineers) and HENCE the Sacrificial Bowl/Cup on the Altar before being changed to a Green Crystal.

I think the Revelations in the ADVENT do not necessary rule out the Tool being as above still.

Some interesting mutations, i am not really a fan of many of them though, what some of these show is not BIO-MECHANICAL as far as HR Giger Aesthetic, but more of Human Technology fused with the MORPHS in kind of like the BORG way of Controlling them...    This could lead us to conclude could it have been for ALIEN 5 and that the Plot would have shown us a Company/Science Division trying to attach Technology to the Xenomorphs to Control them?

But then it could also be about the Covenant Sequel, if indeed its a lot about AI, as well we could see that again trying to attach Technology to the Xenomorphs to Control them, could be seen as a kind of AI
