@centaurian_slug
ALIENS is not the more popular film. Look at this data from boxofficemojo.com, a list of Sigourney Weaver's films. Adjusted for inflation, the original ALIEN sold more tickets.

As far as the notion that Ripley only get to conquer her fear in the sequel, let's be reminded that in one early treatment of ALIEN screenplay every character is supposed to be killed off. In the final draft, Ripley survives, kicks ass & conquers her fear by blasting the Xeno off the airlock. While ALIEN is more contemplative, ALIENS has a more gung-ho Marine attitude: "Let's nuke these bastards!!!"
OT: Look at AVATAR's box office number, this movie is freaking huge! More than 3 times ALIEN's take. But rest assured, I am always a big fan of Scott's ALIEN.

As Oscar Wilde said:
People who drink wine prefer Alien
People who drink beer prefer Aliens
I drink both

I agree with the T/S. I was scared shitless. I felt helpless for myself and crew. Then when Aliens came out with bad ass marines to boot, I thought (foolishly) we were going to take it to them. Only to see every one just about wiped out. Ironically, Newt was better trained than those marines...
Nevertheless, I have enjoyed the series and still watch them. Even though I didn't like the last couple of outings too well, I still have them in my collection. My love for the series overrides my previous sentiments about the films and now I watch them with my enjoyment.
Poor human hybrid alien clone...how it sucked to be sucked through a tiny hole into space until all your guts are pulled out of you. Terrible.

lol
And I like what you said @Enderwiggin
I indeed drink both myself...

@Shardy cannot agree with you about Aliens being a reductive version of ALIEN.
ALIEN was about making first contact with that species and they did not know a thing about it before.
Aliens is a hommage of the US-Vietnam war where the US troops lost to a technical inferior enemy. It is about arrogance of the USMC in the movie where they did not
take the Xenomorph serious enough when they went in.
ReplyShabouAlien Movies Forumwhy aliens is so greatJan 26, 2012
Aliens had the worst casting I have ever seen in the franchise... Mrs Weaver must have felt very lonely on the set for she was the only professional actress in that movie. The charactor of Carter Burke was the worst of them all. Man... such bad acting but understandable since he was a stand-up comic...) Long Live Alien (not the director's cut) !
Replyalteredstate.Alien Movies Forumwhy aliens is so greatJan 26, 2012
agreed shabou and the way he was dressed in the film pins it down to the eighties in an instant,.... he's wearing a ben elton suit for christ sake.
The other thing is the marines acting was bad i guess Discipline is a free for all in the future and its not enforced in the marines very well.
Also there was an over use of back projection that looks poor today . ties it again to the eighties.
The film was entertaining but the original was a masterpiece .

i got to say i'm sick to death of sc fi films resorting to the military in almost everything these days that joke isn't funny anymore and its tired and lazy as i said in an earlier post the marines/army could of saved themselves a lot of bother if they were armed to the teeth with a few gallons of cockroach killer lol.

I always wondered why the egg on the official film poster looks nothing like the actual alien egg. Maybe I'll find the answer by rewatching these Making-Of films. Great effort Ripley Clone 8.
ReplyimsetiAlien Movies ForumThe Making Of ALIENJan 26, 2012
I think they didnt use the actual egg in the poster cause nobody would know what they were looking at
ReplyStarbeastAlien Movies ForumThe Making Of ALIENJan 26, 2012
Yep, I buy that. But kinda contradictory the fact that they juxtaposed the word Alien with the familiar shape of an egg. But I'm splitting hairs now!
ReplybigbirdjimmyAlien Movies ForumThe Making Of ALIENJan 26, 2012
Maybe the did not use it because they thought that a leathery egg would hold the moisture for the facehugger better than a fragile thin egg? In the trailer of Alien it is shown cracking rather easily. Plus you wouldn't have the dramatic opening of the egg either.
ReplyBacon BoyAlien Movies ForumThe Making Of ALIENJan 26, 2012
the egg or the facehugger would NOT be as cool without the dramatic opening. little things like that make it much more awsome
ReplyStarbeastAlien Movies ForumThe Making Of ALIENJan 26, 2012
which makes me think, some of the original Alien trailer was misleading (i.e. the cracking hard-surface egg, with green glow etc), in fact, the trailer for Predators recently was misleading too (remember the multiple predator laser crosshairs on the lead character). So I wonder how much of the Prometheus trailer is going to be completely not show up in the actual film.
ReplydbAlien Movies ForumThe Making Of ALIENJan 26, 2012
It is a common studio practice to include scenes in trailers that are not in the actual movie. You may be on to something there as far as misinformation goes.
ReplyCinefanAlien Movies ForumThe Making Of ALIENJan 26, 2012
The scene in Spielberg's War of the World with them in a mini van and the freeway/bridge collapsing behind them was filmed just for the trailer and wasn't going to be in the movie, but was later added to the film.

contemporary sci-fi favorites is difficult for me to list,
since there aren't any really that come close to my top 5:
THX 1138 (Directors cut)
ALIEN
BLADE RUNNER
THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND
but i can think of:
Contact
The Abyss
Cloverfield

other than that, (sadly) my list has run dry

'Rosemary's Baby'
a whole cavalcade of episodes of 'The X-Files'
'Psycho'
'La Jetee'
'Signs'
'The Thing From Another World'
John Carpenter's 'The Thing'
'The Thing'...prequel to John Carpenter's.
'Halloween'
'Fire In The Sky'
'Cloverfield'
'Super 8'
'Diabolique'....awesome
'Vincent'....Tim Burton's directorial debut...in claymation.
'Firefly'...the entire series.
'Nosferatu'....the silent film.
'Metropolis'.....also silent.
'Plan 9 From Outer Space'
'First Spaceship On Venus'.....wonderfully interesting, awful and hilarious all at once....,concerning a crew of scientists visiting an unexplored world, Venus, that contains the remnants of an alien civilization......sound familiar......engineers involved in an industrial project to irrigate the Gobi Desert accidentally unearth a mysterious and apparently artificial "spool." When found to be made of a material unknown on Earth, the spool is circumstantially linked to the Tunguska explosion of 1908. The "spool" is seized on as evidence that the explosion, originally blamed on a meteor, was actually caused by a spaceship. Professor Harringway deduces the alien craft must have come from Venus. The spool itself is determined to be a flight recorder, and partially decoded by an international team of scientists led by Professor Sikarna and Dr. Tchen Yu. When radio greetings sent to Venus go unanswered, Harringway announces that a journey to Venus is Earth's only alternative. The recently-completed Cosmostrator I spaceship, intended to voyage to Mars, is redirected to Venus, a 21 day trip. During the voyage, Sikarna works furiously to translate the alien message on the disc using the ship's computer."................interestingly familiar.....isn't it?

ReplyXenophobePrometheus ForumSimilarities between Xenomorphs and SJ's??Jan 25, 2012
Yeah they both seem biomechanical in origin in my opinion! Could this be because in fact, BOT species were created by another unknown species we'll see in Prometheus??
