BigDaveAlien: Covenant Forumridley scott mentions the possibility of ripley being in his prequel series. thoughts?

when working on my Prometheus 2, i had Miss Weaver as a Cameo playing Dr Shaw's Grandmother who was her Guardian after the Death of Shaws Father.  Her name was Ellen Shaw and it was at her Funeral and so the Cameo was brief.

But looking at how to bring in Ripley into the Sequels if they Re-booted Aliens, or Alien 3 etc i think story wise it would fit, but then its pulling of a 30+ year old Ripley.

But to bring her into the Prequels would make NO Sense.. due to time restraints, yet this is what RS is teasing.

Ellen Ripley is Born in 2092, she would be nearly 13 when the events of Alien: Covenant take place.... so they could introduce her as a 12-13 year old i suppose...  but then this would have to take place during the Covenant Mission to Origae-6 but RS is hinting the next movie would not have Ripley but the one after.

Now if Alien Awakening takes place after Alien Covenant, but we do not see Ripley, this means a latter movie would either by after they arrive at Origae-6 and Ripley is part of a Colony there already, or she is awoken from Cyro-Sleep..

Now it will take the Covenant 7 years to get to Origae-6 which would make Ellen Ripley 19-20 years old, then if she is on the Covenant we have to ask how does a 12 year old in Cryo-sleep age in 7 years... do they appear as a 19 year old? or younger.

Unless she is on Origae-6 already (which i think it had not colony at present) even so we need to then consider from Origae-6 to our Solar system would be another 7+ years, so the Covenant arrives in the year late 2111 or early 2112 then events happen and we are introduced to Ripley, if this is on Origae-6 we then have to see her get from here to the Nostromo within the Space of 10 years... considering unless another ship travels faster than the Covenant, then we could be looking at another 7 years after that (2118-2119).

And so i cant see how introducing a Ripley in the timeline between Alien Covenant and Alien, and her being on the Covenant or Origae-6 will even fit in at all.

Ha ha.. nice Fan Fiction MonsterZero... i need to motivate me to finish mine off ;)

I do think the Ripley Clone idea is a nice little bit of fan fiction, but then to pull it off on a movie, it could split fans lol but then also its how do you De-Age Ripley?  Miss Weaver is getting on now.

And i think this is the Problem RS/FOX will have if they attempt to bring Ripley back into the FOLD... they will have a hard time trying to portray Miss Weaver as anything under 50 years of age.  Maybe a Bit of CGI etc could help..... but certainly to try and bring in a Ripley to look in her 30's would be too difficult unless a lot of money was thrown at it.  And well The T-800 in Terminator Genisys or Tarkin from Rogue One looked pretty Good... they was expensive to do and then only appeared in Cameos, to do this quality CGI for a Character playing longer would cost so much and with FOX only coughing up $97M for Alien: Covenant i cant see them investing a massive Budget to pull off some CGI De-Aging ....However RS has mentioned a few times now about how you can De-Age Miss Weaver... if this was done on a Tight Budget then imagine how shocking this would look.

I do not think that David downloaded himself into Walter. The novelization makes it more clear that Walter is still alive on the planet, because David (pretending to be Walter) warns Daniels that David is still alive (in order to throw suspicion on Walter's identity -- in case he recovers and tries to come to her rescue).

Also, even in the movie, David's hand is severed at a lower point than Walter's was. David didn't inflict quite as severe an injury on himself as the one Walter had sustained.

I think the reason David seems to be rooting for Daniels in her struggle against the xeno as he watches the monitors is because: he legitimately is rooting for her.

David has feelings for Daniels, the same kind he had for Shaw. He doesn't want the xeno to kill her, he has bigger plans for her.

Yes I suppose I agree with the, "Sad about risking the Xenomorph. " Or, maybe, upset. Sad might be the wrong word. Or not. Either way, it makes sense. I mean, it is an interesting thought that you put forward, but I don't know how well it would play otu on screen. May come across as sort of cheesy (or something. I'm not sure.) Then again, if any duo could pull it off, it's Ridley Scott and Michael Fassbender

@MonsterZero

I love that prologue! Oh my gosh, I am imagining Ash and Helen having a relationship similar to that of Walter and Daniels! How tragic, as there is nothing Ash can do for her, except be there! I suppose if I had to die in the vacuum of space, having a close android companion with me would be of at least some small comfort.

You are very good at describing scenes, I really hope we get to read more!

I'll tell you something I don't usually like to tell people on the internet because as soon as I do, everyone immediately starts to nit-pick my every grammatical error: I teach middle school literature.

Some of the best best stories are fires that are never entirely put out -- short stories with ambiguous, thought-provoking endings. I love assigning such stories in class and having my students think up, discuss and defend their own endings.

I really would love to read your fan-fics even if you decide to keep them short and leave the conflicts unresolved.

Started a Ash fan fic(off topic)

                            Prologue
2101

The detonation ripped a gaping hole in the Minerva. Ash and his fellow scientists were expelled into space. Tumbling, disoriented and without suits, they were doomed. Seeing Helen drift away from him, he pushed towards her......just catching her arm! Helen's expression was pure terror. Ash did his best to calm her, He would be there for his helen, she wouldn't die alone.........

                            Chapter 1

                  "Permission to come aboard"
2115
Science vessel: Proteus
Location: Alpha Caeli V, Solomons

Ash boarded the vessel with trepidation. They were bound for the Origae system with a goal of visiting a new colony. but, lack of communication from the transport vessel Covenant, was putting his trip in jeopardy! Only six months from their destination: Origae-6, the Covenant's strange vector telemetry and multiple delays were putting their arrival time in disarray, further delays and the Proteus would reach Origae6 before the Covenant! This would simply not do. He needed the colony established for at least 6 months to gather his data. His time was valuable and better spent elsewhere.

The only thing I noticed was David pretending to be Walter. He was acting unemotional like Walter would in order to trick the remaining crew. Ridley Scott clearly says David took Walter's clothes and cut off his own hand, that David literally took Walter's place. David cutting his hair early on foreshadows this. If it was a simple programming thing then David and Walter would not have to look alike for it to work. Walter is still on the planet, presumably shut down or disabled in some way.

I can only assume David seemed conflicted because he doesn't want them to kill his precious Xenomorph.

Ridley Scott explains the switch in this Podcast: Alien: Covenant Spoiler Special With Sir Ridley Scott

VivisectedEngineerAlien: Covenant ForumSo is Walter still on the Planet? *Spoiler*

The novel makes it more clear that Walter is still alive and on the planet.

After David assumes Walters identity, he immediately warns Daniel's that "David" is still alive and at large (presumably so that if Walter tries to come to her aid, she believe it's David).

@Timmy the ultramorph

Yes, I could see that. I guess, having Newt and Bishop (Bishop,  kind of) die even before the start of the movie just feels like so much more of a loss.

Similar to what happened to Shaw - so unceremonious!

I guess it's just that, now that I've become legitimately attached to Daniels, Walter and Tennessee, I'm scared to see something similar happen to them!

Somehow I'd prefer to watch each of them die fighting rather than have their death's just become a perfunctory footnote at the beginning of the next film.

But, I'm sure, even if that does happen in the next movie I'll love it just the same. I'll be a little horrified. But I guess that's part and parcel of the genre.

I want a movie with David and Shaw where we also understant how really created (if he really did) the xeno. But that movie I am 99% sure will kill the Alien Precuels. Because only a few people want it. Awakening can take 3 lines. 1 pure precuel of Covenant. No more films.

2 A secuel of Covenant but with moments of David remembering what happened to Shaw and that things. Well made could be a Wonderful movie, but I am sure that people will not like it. I can see the critics "Wonderful movie except for David remembering everytime what happened, makes the movie slow and confusing"

3 a pure Alien Covenant secuel, well made, with nice marketing and word of mouth could be the film that let the people forget the failed Prometheus and trust Scott again.

VivisectedEngineerAlien: Covenant ForumWalter's feelings for Daniels...

Walter definitely has feelings for Daniels, the novel makes it more clear. I too felt bad about how things ultimately turned out.

...Would you like to feel even worse about it?

Walter is somewhat to blame for Daniels' ultimate predicament.

When David is attacking Daniels, Walter reacts emotionally because of his feelings for her. Had he not, he could have legitimately rescued her.

Walter knows that, like him, David has a control inside his neck that, if depressed, would have deactivate him (and David wouldn't have been able to recover the way Walter did).

If only Walter had paused to take stock for a moment -- he could have located a sharp object, (or even used his own finger, as David did in the book) and jabbed it into David's neck, summarily defeating him.

Walter has a similarly light step and could have snuck up on David (and in fact, he did sneak up on him, but threw him off of Daniels instead of stabbing him).

Since they are otherwise evenly matched, apart from Walter missing a hand, there was no possibility of Walter winning the fight. The only thing he had in his favor was the element of surprise, which he wasted.

David's little monologue made it clear that he had no intention of immediately killing Daniels.

If Walter had not acted with such unnecessary urgency and emotionality, Daniels would not have wound up at David's mercy with him in control of the Covenant.

But, now that Walter is stranded on Planet 4, he has plenty of time to reflect on his actions, inaction and the repercussions there of. He has my sympathies.

cuponator3000: a possibility for the next alien movie that would be similar to your idea and a bit more pausible is if the prequal and the sequel happen in the same movie cutting between each other throught the movie filling things in for the audience. one example of this writing technique is in the movie the godfather part 2. it is a sequel to the godfather by continueing from were part one left of but in-between scenes it shows an origin story of the main character of part one. this could work in alien awakening because i dont think that davids taking over and killing shaw would take up a whole movie and if that story was just taking up about a third of the film answering some questions while telling a story rather than the whole movie just being a giant exposition scene.

I tend to agree with the idea that her being a normal person thrown into crazy circumstances to which she has no prior connection is part of what makes her so bad-ass.

I really really liked the suggestion that MonsterZero gave a while back, that Ash is David -- i.e., David downloaded his consciousness into Ash. Man, MonsterZero your description of that scene literally gave me chills, you should like...send it to Ridley Scott or something.

Also, I really hope you will start writing fan fic! (Even though I'm not sure it will work on screen, I like your excerpt here about Ripley being a clone all along).

You are an awesome writer, I want to read more! You can write short, impactful stories, they don't need to be long! :D

Also, regarding the possibility of Alien^3 getting retconned... I like Alien^3 so part of me wouldn't like that but...part of me would like to imagine a better outcome for Newt and Bishop, so I'd have mixed emotions on it.

Hello @I Moon Girl!

I'm really sorry for the delay. I'll tell you a story that sounds completely made up, but isn't. When I was out for my jog that day, a low flying bat collided with my arm. (The bat didn't intentionally ruin my day -- he was just swooping down for some mosquitoes in the light of a low-positioned lamp, and I was making an unexpected turn.)

Anyhow, the bat left scratches on my arm, and I needed to go to the hospital and start a series of rabies vaccine boosters. I've been thoroughly traumatized by the ordeal for the past few days, but I'm fine now.

1.) Ok, as far as David knowing that Oram was a scientist, that really should have been a red flag, but I think there was just too much going on for Oram to really notice it.

I can't find Oram making any McCoy esque statements about being a scientist haplessly thrown into the position of captain. Most of the author's revelations on the matter come from the descriptions of Oram's internal thoughts, before he even left the ship.

I do think David is a very observant fellow, and it's possible that he ascertained from Oram's demeanor that he is a scientist.

2.) As far as when David says “As you doubtless noted, the impact was considerable" I think he is referring to the fact that it just seems obvious that the ship crashed really forcefully. He didn't necessarily have to hear them conversing about it, he's just  speculating that they've probably seen it by now.

However, turn to page 218, where David says "Really? Then why did you risk your life, your existence, to save her? Yes, I saw that, from a distance. What is that if not love?"

Ok, so David says he saw that "from a distance".

So we can imagine that David could see and hear much more than a human could, from a much greater distance, and that he moved with all due alacrity and that he set off the flair as soon as was practical to save the crew.

But we all know David a little better than that, don't we? Would it surprise anyone if David had been lurking nearby behind the tall grass watching the whole scene unfold, and not setting off the flair until he got a bit bored?

Would it surprise anyone if, since their very arrival, David had been following the crew, lurking in the shadows and gleaning bits of information about them (like the fact that Oram is an inexperienced captain)?

Would not surprise me at all. I mean, he likes to brush up on people's vulnerabilities before interacting with them -- hence him spying on Shaw's dreams at the beginning of Prometheus.

Everything Ridley has said about the next one indicates it will follow Covenant. He said it will involve religion and be about the colonists and what happens when they get to the planet. He said they will evolve and form a new world, and that it will show how the colony disintegrates.

He also said the Engineers will arrive back at planet 4 and find it decimated. They are one of "3-4 players" will arrive there to investigate. He also said he was heading into "War of the Worlds", which could mean mankind goes to war with the Engineers.

I'm guessing the "religious" element is David setting himself up as a "god" and wanting the colonists to worship him. One of the "players" that goes to planet 4 is possibly Weyland -Yutani.

There was an interview a long time ago where Ridley said the timeline is: Prometheus, Awakening, Covenant, but Katherine Wtaerson stopped him (she basically yelled when she said, "You're saying too much!").

I don't think that this is the case though. Maybe they were planning to bounce back at one point, but I think they will have to keep going forward in the timeline to keep general audiences.

One thing that I would HOPE is if they literally shot, like, back-to-back or even simultaneously, a movie of David and Shaw on Planet 4 (Prometheus 2. That one could be called Awakening) and the sequel to Covenant. There is almost no way that will happen, but yeah.

@Thoughts & Dreams

For me a movie with David and Shaw pursuing their curious and unusual relationship and finding out the truth of Paradise would have been utterly riveting compared to the routine Covenant with its troped 1st and 3rd act of Covenant and the muddled 2nd act.

However I do appreciate you do not relate to the performance of Shaw the innocent faith driven heroine of Prometheus who gathered herself through everything she went through(the recognition of her naivety, the death of her boyfriend, the caesarian) to lead and plead with Janek to pursue his suicidal attack on the juggernaut which saved the lives of 6,000,000,000 souls.

Shaws quest for answers and assumption that the star maps were an invitation were nothing compared to the hubris of Sir Peter Weyland believing he would secure immortality. For me Shaw was the only one responding to the facts by the time they woke the Engineer. It is also worth pointing out, by Ridley offering us Shaw's childhood experiences, through the dream visor intervention with David, the back ground to character motivation of the person Noomi was playing was entirely understandable and was something that could work its way into the next movie, the search for Paradise and her reaction to finding out the truth of the Engineers, which would have made for very interesting drama. "I want to go where they came from" was a very exciting prospect compared to David re triggers the beast that is cooked.

The point of this thread began with trying to understand what the crossing means and has been extended into the multiple and competing interpretations of what happened. If you take two characters on the next leg of the journey and make one plot point significant at least twice, in order to meet the needs of the audience you should put that drama clearly and with out ambiguity on the screen.

I would prefer not to see Ripley show up in the prequels, but I have also said that it wouldn't ruin it for me either. I am assuming/hoping it would be executed well (since that is a big thing to do).

I know the fact that Ripley (theoretically) having a connection to this mess before Alien occurs would indeed sort of kill the, "normal person rising to the challenge," vibe, but seeing how she was doomed to fight the xenomorphs after getting off of the Nostromo for the rest of her life... If Ellen Ripley's destiny was to face the xenomorphs, it wouldn't really be that much of a stretch. It is a case of the original movie changing a bit (which kind of sucks), but the sequels kind of already did that a little bit.

Now, I am pretty sure that Ellen Ripley would only be teased to the audience, IF she were to be part of the prequels, but yeah.

DEAD

2054

Mars colony 7

Industrial espionage is a very dangerous occupation, more so in the age of synthetic humans.

David had broken her neck.

He had driven her head against a Laboratory wall, never intending on killing her, it was only when she employed a very dangerous device, did it become his only option.

Standing above the intruder, he removed the gadget from her hand. A quick examination revealed a EMP type weapon.

Suddenly, The door to the lab opened and Peter Weyland entered. He had watched the incident from a secured area and just now found it safe to venture out. Avoiding broken glass and overturned desks, he walked over and stood by his son.

“I killed her.”, David declared.

Peter Weyland paused, “No, We killed her David.” Seizing on an opportunity to bond with his son, he stated, “It was self defense, kill or be killed.”

Without another word, David set the weapon on a desk and returned to his studies.

Peter Weyland examined the trespasser. Seeing her up close, Peter thought she resembled his late wife Ellen, every bit as tall, just as audacious and a brunette to boot! A pity to lose something so young and supple, he thought. A slight smile crossed his face. He would save the dead woman! Return her to life, albeit a life of slavery, but a life nonetheless! She would become his personal secretary and lover.

Peter Weyland felt rejuvenated.

“David, gather the body and follow me to the clone tank".

Epilogue

She was given the name Ellen, David suggesting the surname Ripley, his father liked the embedded gallows humor and it was settled.

Ellen Ripley would remain with Weyland Industries as long as she lived. And on her deaths, re-grown by MUTHUR, previous life records expunged from the database, nannies assigned and future jobs secured.

Ellen’s service to the Guan-Yutani Corporation mercifully ended with the successful deletion of the MUTHUR virus in the year of our lord 2486.

Notes: Not sure how fandom would react to Ripley already being a clone for A L I E N?! (It would certainly open up the universe for hundreds of new Ripley stories. lol!)

Ellen Ripley a product of Peter Weyland and David would tie the first two movies with the last four, to say the least. Better I think, then Ripley's dad or mother showing up in the prequels.

The differences between David and Walter was one of the things that were good about AC although I think that David was written as being a bit too human. I think that it is good that they made Walter a bit more android-like.

I think that they should have focused a bit more on the interaction between Daniels and Walter because then we should have been shown a bit more about Daniels, something that I think was missing in AC. She wasn’t bad but she should have been written better.

Reply
Thoughts_DreamsAlien: Covenant ForumDeleted scenes on blu-ray

Big Dave: The last supper and the Crossing were very good scenes. I wish that they would have included these in the movie, they should have had more material like that. AC should have had more scenes where we get to know more about the characters how they are like persons. More pieces like that would probably have made the movie a lot better. Let the audience know more about the characters, why they are there, how they are like persons and so on. This is needed for me at least to get more sympathy for them once the shit hits so to speak.

Run-time, I think that is one of the reasons why AC wasn’t as good as it could have been.

I can easily sit down for two and a half hours and watch a movie if it is good enough but then there must be some sort of action although not non-stop. Having many scenes in a two and a half hour movie like the one between David and Walter, that would make me tired (because it was too slow) even though the idea of the scene was interesting.

I am shaking my head at the marketing compared to how they movie turned out to be. The way they did it was just bad.

“These prequels are a DAVID Trilogy.”

This far maybe, but that should change, I hope so. I don’t want it to be all about crazy androids running things, leave that to Blade Runner 2. Unfortunately, I think that Scott could be one of those that we can blame for that. I don’t want David to be the creator of the Xeno in the Derelict that is something that is a shitty idea if you ask me. Maybe if the next movie is very good then I might be able to forgive them for that but then it got to be better than Covenant even though it was a step in the right direction. Honestly, I would like to tell Scott what I think about that obviously shitty idea, it is just dumb. There are many interesting themes and things (things that happen, characters, and so on) in the Alien movies but I don’t like that one at all.

“But its open at the moment, so if FOX/RS feel this route will disappoint fans they can change things for the next movie. . . “

I really hope that they do, because having David as a creator of the Xeno would just be bad and I guess that I am not the only one that has this opinion.

Alien Covenant was without a doubt a step in the right direction. Hopefully they will continue this path of improvement for the next movie.

That’s crappy, the lack of Ripley wasn’t the problem with Alien Covenant. Not having Ripley was sort of refreshing as far as AC is concerned. Good question, that doesn’t make sense. Since they are synthetics you could guess that they haven’t got a digestive system so that they don’t need to crap and pee (just stating the obvious folks). If they have to then do they use a special android toilet just like you have toilets for handicapped people? Do they have android signs at the doors? Will the doors sense when there is a non-android that tries to get in if they are (err. . . ) in a rush? Do they have to use paper afterwards or do the crap disappear without a trace?

AC did this well by just having David there. I understand if some wanted to know more about Shaw but I think that they made the right decision.

I also wonder what he meant by saying the he learned about their ways (their probably means the Engineers). They could have explained a bit more what happened to Shaw but it was alright the way they did it in the movie.

David seems to be a curious android so it is possible that he looked around at LV-223 to see if he could gather more information about them before leaving the planet, this is what I would have done at least.

Nah, a David and Shaw movie would have been boring. I am happy that they didn’t go that route.

Big Dave: About laziness and lack in details it could be that they (Scott for example) are more concerned about how they story is built and how it flows in general. Because they think that the over-all story is the most important thing they might think that it is no problem if they miss some details which some of the fans might find strange. This could be a possible explanation. Some of the over-sights are things that I don’t have a problem with as long as we get answers that make sense and a story with characters that are interesting. I guess that this comes down to what the studio wants to show it versus what kind of expectations those that watch the movies have. My guess is that the fans are more concerned about this compared to the studio that wants to make money.

If they would have had subtitles to when David spoke to the Engineer that would have helped a lot but we didn’t get anything like that which was lame. Why be excited by something that they failed to make an interesting introduction to?

If this is how they will go on to explain the Engineers in further movies then no thanks. If they will explain them in some way that makes sense and that makes them seem interesting then sure but they got to be a lot better compared to how they were portrayed in Prometheus (my emphasis).

Covenant was a lot better than Prometheus in both characters and the Xenomorph thing. I really hope that they won’t make David the creator of the original Xenomorph because that would be dumb.

As far as the Xenomorph I would like it to be better done than in Prometheus but it shouldn’t be the only thing. Human characters are the most important thing and if the Xeno was a result of David re-create it using Engineer tech then I would like to see some of the Engineer connection to the Xeno which could be interesting of it is being done right. The Engineer society could also be interesting to an extent at least their bio-weapons if they use it against anyone that they feel might attack them for whatever reason (here is where the Xenomorph might come into play). Maybe they found it somewhere that is they didn’t create it which could be a way to keep it somewhat mysterious but still explain some of it, namely that the Engineers found it and used it as  a bio-weapon but we wouldn’t know how it exactly started to be. I think that this makes sense since we are not totally sure where mankind started either.

The Engineers must be done right, so they really got to think that over. Either they make it a lot better compared to Prometheus or not at all.

As far as Ripley is concerned she is done. I am not interested to see how she lived as a kid.

AC versus Prometheus, I would much rather watch Covenant because at least the characters are not as dumb and there is no Shaw.

The Derelict is interesting. Hopefully the pilot will be someone close to the Engineers. My reason for saying that it would be someone close to the Engineers is that if they will look dumb again in the next movie and be the same as the SJ then it would cast a bad shadow over the SJ but if they are like distant relatives then if they mess up the Engineers the SJ might still have some dignity left. I don’t want the SJ to be David, it would really stink if David would be that.

Isn’t it kind of neurotic to feel like you must go from A to B and so on? To me these are just names, then if they are named Al, Mark, Mathew, and whatever that doesn’t matter. By the way why have we seen so few female androids? As far as I know the only female android this far is Call (Winona Ryder). Not that the number of female androids in a movie is the most important thing in the world but I am just wondering.
