Engineer Prototype - Model GAJ84Prometheus ForumThe transmission at start of trailer is eerie
This ties in nicely with something that has already happened. At the end of Alien 3, the escape pod picks up Ripleys transmission from the end of Alien. And what of the warning signal picked up by the Nostromo? Could it have been sent by a survivor of The Prometheus?

Yes, the notion of Ripley's transmission going on for all eternity is chilling. Partly because this sort of thing is happening right now in space - radio and TV broadcasts from long dead (and living) personalities are drifting out there in the cosmos. I've recently read somewhere someone speculating that the SJ warning signal is either Elizabeth Shaw's or Vickers' voice scrambled and that one of them becomes the SJ we see in the first Alien. This together with rumours of the time-travel aspect and the crew being stranded 'on a planet millions of years ago' when they leave for that planet 70+ years in our future. This really screws with my head big time and is truly nightmarish if this is even remotely possible within the laws of space-time and nature.

Prior to popular belief radio transmissions dont go on forever, they start to stretch and eventually fade away.

No disrespect to Sir Ridley Scott but he doesn't have much time left with us being 74. He's got a lot of work to do. It takes time and hard work to make big movies as this and when your 74 and Prometheus isn't in it's final editing stages yet with release in June and Blade Runner 2 may have a script, or may not and still be on paper. And if there is any more Alien movies to fallow Prometheus, it's a long road. That's why he's busy I would presume. It's easy math...on average people live only 75 years. I'm hoping he's around a long time making movies like Clint Eastwood. Usually the elderly kick off when they quit working. They like to stay busy and that's what keeps them alive and going.

so true RHunter, so damn true. Eastwood was/is the MAN. Have you seen the Extended Cut Of "Rango" ? What a tribute to the man. I thought that was perhaps the single most entertaining film, easily, of the entire past year other than "The Devil's Double". the average of people is 75 because some die a 15 o 5 .... the average life of people that passed the 74 is surely well above 80/85 in rich countries .

Well I just finished watching an interesting movie by Sidney Lumet from 1957 called "12 Angry Men". Most recommended! no it is not related to anything alien but I did learn today of an interesting event in Russia 1959 called Dyatlov Pass. Our visitors might be truly malevolent! Shit someone should make a movie about this story.OTHERwise just passing it on by: Cheers! Have a Safe and Happy one

Well i dont see too many deep meaning ..he was a great traveller ...they could have named it Columbus or De Gama or Cook , i think they didnt build the ship for the expedition so they got they better suited for the job The most ridicolous name for a spaceship was ICARUS for Sunshine ... i mean ...he died to get to close to the sun ..pretty stupid to name in that way a ship that have to ..get close to the sun !!!

NachoFleischmanPrometheus ForumShip's Name
I see your point @Frantz, but I wasn't going to the practical meaning (the name the constructors who manufactured the ship in the movie give to it) but in a metaphorical meaning, just the same that Prometheus. Following your thinking, in the time when the ship was manufactured in the movie, the constructors neither do know that the expedition would steal some great power from an alien race (following some of the speculation hre in the forums), so the name Prometheus hasn't any meaning then. See where am I pointing to? I don't know, maybe is just a nautical name, just the same as Nostromo.

Since I am portuguese, allow me to be picky and point out that his name was Fernão de Magalhães. Magallanes is the spanish approach to the name as much as Magellan is the english one. In fact, having had his name translated across the years is hardly a surprise for me, as I was never able to teach any foreigner to pronounce Magalhães correctly - this weird language of ours eheh... Magalhães's journey also represented a formidable trip into the unknown, in particular of the huge south pacific region. I agree that we shouldn't read too much more from the ship's name than that.

Because I adore you Ghost Solitare I'll respond to your post. My poor dear, I know you don't give a rats ass about any forced impregnation by engineers, You also could care less about the historical significance of the name of the ship. You knew all along it was doomed, it's the inflated ego that thinks using a clever mythological referrance adds any validity to their art. I also recall you saying a long time ago that reading the old prometheus discussions was not only entertaining it kept you from repeating anything already written, sigh. My dear girl what can you expect you are surrounded by mortals. Even obeying this rule and knowing that RS is not going to respect the canon established after his own Alien film you find yourself wondering exactly what story he is going to tell us, well just wait a few months and you'll find out. Happy New Years my lovely Biosynthetic creatures, cheers!

How many are in that head of yours? : ) I would have responded but personally I am not hearing anyone say "prometheus" and I am doubtful of the "you don't understand" line. I have also seen no evidence of more than one human ship. We disagree on a lot it looks like. I probably won't know if I need a hearing aid until after the release of the movie. Hey someone should write to Fox and get the movie released earlier on humanitarian grounds. I can agree that it may be two different women talking but it might not even be to each other.

I personally do like that. I think the idea of the Alien Queen was a good one in Cameron's ALIENS, which was a total different kind of movie, but I find much more interesting, misterious and scaring that the Alien Lifecycle has no need of another type of creature such as the queen. If you see in a way, you kill the queen, you have not to worry about more eggs, but if any of these creatures can reproduce itself in a way, this would make them a lot more strong, in my opinion.

Exactly NachoFleischman. It would make them an even bigger threat than originally thought. There are animals alive today that can reproduce without the need for a partner. Can't remember the correct name for this type of animal though. As soon as I saw the cut scene it became clear what Scott had been thinking for his original idea. I could be wrong however, and I guess we'll have to wait and see if he takes this idea on for Prometheus in one way or another.

Thanks for the link Spartacus. The ones I'm thinking of can give birth without mating as the creatures have no seperate male and female of the species. They can basically impregnate themselves. I guess the Xeno is a mix of this and the insects in the link you gave. Both concepts pretty disturbing though.

I am not sure if there is actually a class of any animal that does it, but you peaked my curiosity on this one again and I am going to research it.

The term I think you are thinking of is 'Asexual'; there are no animals but some more baisc organisms like snails, star fish and single cell organisms can reproduce with out mating

stuartmccPrometheus ForumAlien lifecycle
You're right Bella', more basic lifeforms can do it. I think there is a worm which is one of the main ones that can do this. When I said animals I just meant it as a general term. As I said above, pretty disturbing concepts especially when it's a creature as big as the Xeno.

Interesting: reading the WikiPedia I have found lot of asexual life forms. Even one that can alternate between sexual and asexual reproduction: heterogamy. In low density times, the individuals got asexuals and made clones of themselves. When the population has grown, they switch to sexual reproduction, for the benefits of genetic diversity. Maybe this doesn't anything in common with the Alien lifecycle... but I find it quite interesting! :)

my personal idea of the alien life cycle is that an alien would mutate a person into an egg when there is no queen to make the eggs. that way they can continue the species without the queen until they get one. so both are right. oh and i hate to say it but even though AvP requiem sucked, i like the idea that an alien queen can implant the embryos via orally before it can grow an egg sack of its own. i have always wanted to make my own article about how the alien life cycle works (in my opinion, not fact)

The Newborn you mean, they should have called it the abombination. That said I don't think the Queen we saw in Alien Rez was from Ripley 8, I think it was from Ripley 7, the deformed clone in the "shop of horrors" that begged Ripley 8 to kill her. I say this because Ripley 7 had an incision scar on her chest just like Ripley 8, hence the Queen was removed. That said if the Queen in Alien Rez was from Ripley 7, where is the Queen from Ripley 8.

I agree "42" did not like it at all, i remember being pissed off about it when I left the theater. At the same time I thought the film presented some really good and original ideas. I watched the features on the Quadrilogy DVD, and they talk a lot about it at the end of them, I think they were unsuccessful in what they were trying to do, express the breeding mix, between Human and "Xeno"...it was really badly portrayed, that creature looked right ONLY in the one full shot we saw in which we couldn't see it's face , and it's face made us all mad, just didn't look right at all !!!
