Yes, I read your post and we agree Spartacus. Good points all around. I was responding to the erroneous notion of how David Fincher "raped the series with 'Alien 3'" written farther up the page. I want to get the word out that Alien 3 would have been a lot worse without him.

I have said that I understand everyone's frustration but I never agreed with it, I feel that film was grossly misinterpreted and unfairly critisized as well. Thanks for being so fair, transparent and honest about how YOU see it.

I trust that Ridley Scott is going to respect us fanatics of the original 'Alien'. He's creating another masterpiece, but he's got a lot of pressure because he's going backwards instead of forwards....he knows that there is an enormous fan base that regards Alien as waaaaay more than just entertainment. To design a prequel is probably the hardest thing he's ever going to do. Its going to be based off a movie that is already timeless...if he doesn't want to fuck with his fans he's going to have to "go back" to the way 'Alien' was constructed as a cinematographic masterpiece: the sets, the acting, the tension, the originality, the sound, the SUBTLETIES!!! I pray every single night that Ridley Scott does Prometheus justice....because we ALL know what happened with the Star Wars prequels!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

According to the few appearances of the Space Jockeys in the comics (they look kinda like Elephant-humanoids with their skin on), they weren't portrayed as the "creators" of the Aliens... they were like exterminators. I think they were supposed to be the original nemesis of the alien species until Dark Horse said "there was an alien skull in predator 2... lets throw them together in a book and see how it goes".

This might be a little out there but interesting none the less...in Revelations in the King James Bible I remember reading something about "an Abyss opening up just after the 5th trumpet being blown and smoke coming out of the abyss into the sky (not the good kind) and the smoke was like Locusts that looked like horses and had faces like men, teeth like Lions and had tails like scorpions!" And they come upon the Earth and punish mankind. Sounds like a great story for a biblical Alien invasion movie! oh ya they had hair like women too and not like the Children of Juda. Sorry Preditor fans! It's all in the head and not in the dread.

I saw the Movie "Paul" recently and right near the end, a really cool lady Punches Sigourney Weaver in the face and temporarily knocks her out, the thing of it is, she says this when she's does it.... "Get Away from her you Bitch" !!! The entire series of films is BURNED into our collective consciousness! Especially those who work in the film industry. It's a part of our Social "POP" Culture now. Almost every horror film since Alien has ripped it off in some way, but most of the imitations have focused on details — a slimy killing-machine monster that is both vaginal and penile; the dripping, cavernous interiors of the Nostromo; those immensely influential H. R. Giger "biomechanical" designs — and missed what you might call the overall Zeitgeist of the film. In...The Authorized Portfolio of Crew Insignias from the United States Commercial Spaceship Nostromo, Designs and Realizations...Ronald Cobb wrote... "I wanted to imply that poor old England is back on its feet and has united with the Japanese, who have taken over the building of spaceships the same way they have now with cars and supertankers. In coming up with a strange company name I thought of British Leyland and Toyota, but we couldn't use "Leyland-Toyota" in the film. Changing one letter gave me "Weylan," and "Yutani" was a Japanese neighbor of mine." NASA scientists have discovered a strange new organism, a lowly bacterium found in the mineral-rich waters of Mono Lake in Eastern California, whose existence raises hope of finding Alien life on other planets. The bacterium, with the catchy name of GFAJ-1, has managed to mutate its own structure, allowing it to survive in an environment entirely toxic to other living organisms. Scientists scooped up samples of the bacterium from Mono Lake and, in the lab, fed it a steady diet of the toxic mineral arsenic. Rather than going “belly up” as expected, the bacterium absorbed the arsenic, assimilating it into its building blocks, and even thrived and grew. The discovery has excited scientists and space buffs alike, because it raises hope of finding life on other planets. Previously, scientists believed that all life forms must depend on oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulphur, to exist. However, this new microbe was able to substitute arsenic for phosphorus, thus opening the door to strange and alien life forms previously not thought possible. Scientists are still uncertain whether the bacterium is a freaky one-off mutation, or whether their experiment proves the possibility of radical new forms of life. But they have already begun to radically re-think the questions related to life on other planets.

I agree , even if Alien owe alot to "the thing from outer space " who later gave birth to the fantastic Carpenter's "the thing" too , is still a perfect masterpiece...i think its impossible to get better than Alien regarding "scaring" sci fi . I still dont get the sexual references , yes giger liked to make everything look a sexual thing but if i watch the movie without any back thoughts i dont catch anything of sexual ... its like sayng that when you eat a sausage you express your homosexual side .

In the case of "Alien", the idea was to scare MEN...MEN, the sex off the two that isn't supposed to scare the easy, and this is why all of the MALES in ALIEN die...in fact, it is exactly why. That film was created with this idea at it's core. In fact, several of the deaths were references to the creatures supposed Bi-Sexuality. I do not particularly like that idea, but it is true that was in their heads at all times while they shot all of the death scenes in that movie. Look it up, I ain't kidding. In fact, when the creature finally kills the only other woman than Ripley, it is done with severely deliberate sexual overtones as the creature's extremeties zero in on her mid section. It was said at one point by Giger I believe that the idea behind the Impregnation of KANE was designed from the get go to be the cinematic equivalence of MALE RAPE!!!

Soooo they are invading earth for the fine pork sausages and mango chutney? Never got that impression from Alien, it was after both sexes and their pets. It's usual in Sci fi that the aliens/monsters are after the earth women except for one cheesy 1986 movie I saw once called Monsters in the Closet and the sequel: Monsters Coming out of the Closet. Soon to be a prequel: Monsters Under the Bed...sheeets. Though that's just after Gene Morph In a Bottle.

Yeah it is a different platform if you look closely, but very similar. There has been speculation that it is the top of the "Head" and is where the SJ is in hyper sleep (all speculation I may add) I don't think it is a ship, I think it is the interior to a chamber or something like that. Remember the early pics that showed the entrance and tunnels? They initially think the sound is a distress call, but mother works out (too late) that it is a warning.BTW, have you heard the warning call on the DC Blu ray?Totally different and no where near as efective!!!!

nope ...the cds ive are from the Alien Collection ( with a very interesting alien legacy CD ) and there is the classic ( and scaring ) warning call BTW for the 100+ time ive watched alien and for the 100+ time it catched my attention from the 1st frame ...is incredible how it catch you ... i really hope Scott can do again that magic ...and that lead me to some speculations 1) he did add Pearce and Foster because he wasnt able to recreate the right crew chemistry , so he did add 2 people with a strong personality . 2) the crew of the nostromo were made by "not very beautiful people " and not also very young ...ive the slight fear that the prometheus crew is a bit too young and good looking ( expecially in the main characters )

Mmm...dead people...worms hole...the "dead tunnel"...too mystic for the best horror movie of ever. I think that a great story need be rational, as Alien and Aliens, Alien IV was too much Sci Fi, a bad and poor original argument, Ellen Ripley died and she is cloned 200 years after..whit AND founded in a litle rest of her Blood ¡Come on! If you try to "turn to live" a movie you never do it. Another possibilty as StarWars, staring in the beginin to go at end. For me the end of story is Alien III, Ripley died and we can't do anythink, and of course, Aliens not is Aliens whitow Sigourney Weaver...so...we need find some argument that make her lost minor sensible. I think in a Scientific Base...from a Real Data..you know that some sciencist believe that Aliens come to earth for "Carry Water" as an Oil Station..they come take some of water and thet leave..So can be possible, and terrorific, is one of this "aliens" or "space jokers" came to earth for water...they carrier but..they pick up someone else...can be a virus...can be a bacteria..can be microorganism...that evolute to the creature...thata exterminate all kind of life in the planet of Alien...the space joker is the only survivor...and try to find the earth for live...but he die in way...and here you have the origin of the Alien..the space joker send a signal...Weytland Yutany find it and send to nostromo for investigate what is this. Other story can be more normal and simply that aliens are the nature specie of one planet and the space joker go there to hunt they..but something going wrong..and the aliens goes to space jokers planet kill al population, just one can? Scape, in way he discover that he has one inside, desperate send a signal to warning all the universe..Weilant knows and send to nostromo's crew to investigate it knowing that is a warning signal. We have the origing of aliens and who is the guy in space ship. Last story a litle more Sci Fi, the ship is a secret ship lunchet by the US goverment to investigate a planet outside solarsistem, the space ship goes and...they find this specie, die all expecp one that turn back but in way explode for the host...he could send signal and die...Here the company capture the signal and saw that is "the lost ship" and send to nostromo to investigate it and carry it. Anyway all stories explain the origin of aliens, space jokers and conclude whit this interrogation "How did the company know, exacly the coordenates of ship"

watched again alien tonight ... two thoughts 1) the space jockey platform is slightly different ...but still very similar , so much that i start to think that is the same ship . What if the ship is shoot down on the lv426 by the prometheus crew ? 2) in the italian traslation the message "sounds like a menace" and that was interesting ..but in the original it sound like a "warning" .. that make alot of a difference , why they should warn if they want to destroy ? of course the 2 stories could not be linked directly ...

@Spartacus Well Spartacus, I will say that I have a deep “cinematic” love, or at least appreciation for the original 1979 ALIEN film. As far as the rest of the franchise, you could say…I have a 32 year old infatuation with the ALIEN “universe” cooked up by Dan O’Bannon, Ridley Scott, and H.R. Giger. My fondness of the films follow a kind of descending order. I’ll put it this goofy way: If my viewing experiences of the ALIEN films were like sexual experiences with the fairer sex, I would list them thusly: ALIEN: A loving, deep, passionate, exotic, and mysterious time…with a beautiful and romantic climax. Like in a great marriage. Truly making love. Unforgettable! :-) ALIENS: Great foreplay, followed by an exciting, semi-taboo, rollercoaster ride, with a woman I’ve known for seven years…and was always curious about. Ending with a big bang, and then a European cigarette :-o ALIEN 3: Foolin’ around with a babe that reminds me of a woman that I’m still in love with. It’s a pretty good time…but I can’t stop thinking about the one I truly love. Melancholy sex :-( ALIEN: RESSURECTION: Bedding down with a prostitute or a VERY cheap broad. We go through the motions, but it just doesn’t feel right. I can’t really respect her…because she doesn’t even respect herself. She barely resembles who she used to be. And I’m pissed off that I actually paid for this counterfeit action…in one way or another. Nevertheless, I’ll call her again next week :-(( Weird huh? I guess. But that’s the way I feel about the franchise. Unfortunately, I am not as optimistic as you are about the new PROMETHEUS film. It’s pretty much destined to fail, at least ME. Either, because it just won’t measure up as a Great film story, or because it will tweak and mess with my own personal imaginings and Alien lore. So, as an old ALIEN “dog,” I’m pretty much screwed. Of course, there is an extreme, outside chance, that it will meet or even exceed my filmic desires, but I highly doubt it. If there’s a director who can do it, it’s probably Scott. But, even he has a relatively spotty film record lately. We’ll see. “I don’t trust anybody.” ~Dallas…and Neurion “Right. You see, Mr. Parker and I feel that the bonus situation has never been on an…equitable level.” ~Neurion P.S. Thanks for cordiality and kind words in your response to my post.

ALIEN 3: The GOOD, The BAD, and The UGLY THE GOOD Original ideas General atmosphere Some dialogue Art Direction/Production Design Music Cinematography Costumes Sound effects Matte paintings THE BAD Almost all of the Special Visual Effects (especially optical/blue screen effects) A dearth of likeable characters Clunky and clumsy editing Pacing/Story structure Bishop Android connection THE UGLY Killing off prime characters for narrative convenience Killings which lacked purpose Killings which were sloppy and bloody vs. cold, eerie, and calculated The ALIEN’S physique…especially in motion (optical effects) In my opinion, the question is not whether ALIEN 3 is a good film, the question is…WHO is it good for? For myself, after seeing it many times, in different incarnations…I enjoy it. Do I think it’s a good or great film (like ALIEN, Blade Runner, The Thing, ALIENS, or The Terminator), absolutely NOT. After my initial disappointment in ALIEN 3…over the subsequent years…it grew on me. Once I had survived: 1. My initial shock of seeing two beloved characters (Newt and Hicks) needlessly a thoughtlessly killed off over the opening credits…for no other reason but actor availability issues, lazy writing and script constraints 2. The ALIEN looking like some small, Blue Screen-ish, lightweight, optically composited, cockroach thing (still haven’t recovered from the infirmary scene where this DICK head puppet looking thing pulls up to bald Ripley, looking as feeble as a cheap ass marionette). 3. And of course the Christ-like image of Ripley sacrificing herself in the hot lead for all of mankind…which would’ve been okay, except for the chestbursters impeccable timing, and our heroine having the presence of mind to reach up and hold onto the bogus looking practical effect. Not to mention the terrible molten metal animation. ...I was free to enjoy the film…as it is. And the reedited (non-directors cut) version is even better still…despite its goofy editing flaws, further bad animation, and patchy sound. Still infinitely better. @Spartacus I agree with some the comments in your posts. However, these films may belong to the creators/filmmakers/FOX, but it is asses in seats that make or break a film franchise…specifically mine and yours. And if these guys don’t get their shit together and give the people some quality cinema similar to the original ALIEN, the only asses that will be in the theater, will be themselves…give or take a few ALIEN addicts. Also, you’ve mentioned enjoying scenes where the ALIEN 3 Xenomorph devours or eats its victims. I don’t think that any of the ALIEN filmmakers ever intended that the viewer is to believe that the ALIEN…EATS it victims. It’s only ever been depicted as an instinctive means to reproduce and or eradicate anything that could pose a threat to its lifecycle. Not food. It just seems less creepy to me. Maybe I just have a completely different understanding of the ALIEN than you do. Anyway, I enjoy ALIEN 3 as well. Back to the old freezerinos! ~Neurion

We can also say that the "thing in the jars" create a mix between the aliens and the humans ( the xenomorph of Alien have a human shape after all ) BUT is also true that the space jockey of halien have 2 arms and a head ... Btw if the goo , the liquid , the black film from the jar have to take some form surely it looks like a mix between the alien architecture and a human body .

All very astute observations Neurion, Whatever it was eating or just ripping to pieces or cutting up to cacoon and store for egg implantation, I found such scenes in Alien 3 absolutely exhillerating to watch. It is the ONLY film of the four in which FULL SHOTS are seen of the Xenomorph engaded in said behaviour. By "Full Shot" I am referring to the Technical term for a shot that includes the entire body of the Alien and taken from a little further back so you can see Clearly what it is doing. The Dr.'s death scene, all of it, including the Xenomorph's intimidation of Ripley before it departs though the air vent above with his mutilated corpse, is a THING OF ABSOLUTE BEAUTY as far as cinema and film making go... IMO. Just a remarkable scene. Never the less I love the way you took the time to break down your argument and i respect that, I can tell there were things that bugged you as did me, but at the same time you could never have done that without a deep love for the entire franchise and all it's 4 films. You "prolly" could have done better than Fyncher. I think in the end when all is said and done and this film is released it will be along long time before I ever watch Alien 3 again, simply because THIS ONE...looks to me like it's going to blow ALL 4 OUT OF THE WATER PERMANENTLY!

I can't find the site that had the quote, but Ridley explains that after discovering the ruins in Africa in which the SJ's leave coordinates for possible descendents of humans in the future that will lead them to the SJ's home world. After making it to the SJ's world the crew find that the SJ's are delighted since humans have, out of all their creations, advanced the furthest. From here the SJs take the crew deeper into space, which is where the "weirdness" begins. The SJs share some of their secrets with the crew(as stated above in the fake-spoiler) in regards to terra-forming, secrets of life, etc. However, for one member of the crew what the SJs have revealed to the humans is not enough, and the natural curiosity of humans takes over. Once he "takes" whatever the SJs wanted to remain a secret from the humans is when things get dicey. The human crew is able to turn one of the SJs "creations" against them(the aliens which will not yet resemble 1979-etc) and they make their escape. The SJ's entire existence is called into question by the human crews actions. The SJs, in a last act of revenge/last laugh send out a lone ship, towards Earth-space - packed with the same cargo that is wiping out the SJs. The pilot of the derelict is on a kamikaze mission. In an "Alien" outtake the actual audio of the "SOS" is played for the crew of the Nostromo. The sound is defintely organic in nature(sounds like a cassette tape in slow-mo/reverse/varying speeds) and not any type of beacon or repeating manufactured signal. I like the idea of humans, as something the SJs "engineered" eons ago, coming to outsmart their creators(or are we ultimately outsmarted?) and then the SJs reverting to what is basically a TNT-vest suicide mission. I remember another Ridley quote in which he states that at the end of Prometheus we find ourselves on-board the derelict itself or what will become the derelict. I also read the part about the SJs having 2 men copulate to reproduce(not sure how such an advanced race would make that mistake) as well as the Weyland Corp. being involved(Yutani has yet to come along). It does make sense though that the SJs are extinct if we are colonizing space ourselves and the first signs of life are enountered by the crew of the Nostromo - aliens and the fossilized remains of a Jockey(with chest-burster hole). Not sure what everyone is getting at about the green/red goo/blood/eggs etc - but remember that in Alien there is another outtake that shows that the alien eggs can be formed not by a queen but by taking living beings and "cocooning" them, etc(Ripley runs into Dallas on the wall, already taking on the form of an egg, and speaking in tones of great pain). So far ALL the plot leaks and Ridley/actors involved quotes on plot seem to be awesome yet not entirely original. Alot seems to be similiar to the Dark-Horse comics Aliens spin-off series from the mid-90s(one spin off in particular, in which Earth is consumed by aliens and the "ghost" of the derelict appears to the main character in a dream to explain the story of the aliens and their own race). However, I am sure I will be proved wrong(but if not, I like the plot and story). On Alien 3 - I wish the Sulaco made it back to Earth and delve into how Ripley(along with Hicks and Newt, as well as Bishop - who may have been a company man in the end) deal with the W-Y Co. etc. Alien 4 totally ruined it with full-blown alien studies taking YEARS(i forget how many it is supposed to be, but WAY too long) to continue again - also I doubt the blast of the terra-forming reactors would have damaged the derelict and its cargo, considering it looked like it had been there for some time and was some distance from Hadley's Hope(people jump to conclusions about the blast radius/effects of a thermonuclear blast - the derelict is in one piece im sure, not to mention the terrain of LV-426(take Nagasaki - a city of hills in which parts of town, although 2-3 miles from impact displayed little to no damage as they were protected by geography like hills and mountain). I think that emphasis should definetely be placed on corporations having more control than govt's in the future as well as the picture painted in Alien(and blade runner) that the future is not all nice and white/polished but rather dingy with salaries just allowing for space crews to eek out a living - "We want to talk about the bonus situation, yes, exactly Dallas, the bonus situation!). Wow, a real novel of blabber I left - have fun deciphering!

All things being said, i think the only potential dissapointment from prometheus could be 1 of two things, or both for that matter, first if it is a garbage movie like avp requiem, or second and most seriously, it has a pg-13 rating, the pg-13 rating will absolutely kill this film. that is what scares me the most, anyone who disagrees need only watch the first avp and see how there is no real suspense of fear in that movie and the cut aways right when someone gets it, is weak, and that is what we'd all be left with, DISSAPOINTMENT!!!!!! hopefully with Ridley at the helm these two things can be averted and the story, whatever it turns out to be, will be entertaining.....

Alien did work because it was SCARING ...was a primitive FEAR ...you were there , in the middle of the crew thinking , with them , how to deal with IT . My main fear is that Ridley aim too high for what must be basically a Sci-fi horror movie . Im interested in an intriguing script but dont carry me too away with gods , life etc etc because its not that kind of a movie . I want to care about the crew , follow them and be scared with them .

Amen to that Blazer1411, ya just know if a film like this is carryin' a Pg-13 rating Into it's opening run it's gonna die a quicker death than one via Xenomorph!
