Alien: Earth timeline confusion: Noah Hawley talks connecting the series to ALIENS as well!

Alien: Earth Showrunner and creator Noah Hawley has spoken officially on the series timeline and how it links to the Alien film chronology. Despite previous remarks suggesting the show exists in its own parallel timeline separate to the film's series of canonical events, a more recent interview has Hawley confirming the contrary – the show and film's exist in the same timeline and not only that, Noah has plans of potentially linking to James Cameron's sequel ALIENS at some point as well!

The quote which I've transcribed from this interview clearly states Hawley's intentions with Alien: Earth, after being asked "Where in the Alien universe timeline does the series exist":

We start a couple years before they wake up, on the Nostromo, before Ridley's film, so we're contemperanius with the original film and depending on how long the show runs, you know, we might head toward the second film. But there's a lot of negative space in the Alien franchise because they're asleep for majority of the years that go by...

Wording matters and Noah Hawley is selectively calculated with his wording. To say the series is contemperanius with the original film means it exists together in the same period of time. To further suggest the series might connect in a way to the second film also suggests a clear indication that the does NOT in fact exist in its own lane, so to speak.

Alien: Earth – Hadley’s Hope Season?

Where could future seasons of Alien: Earth go? Well, it goes without saying that the series could tackle the construction of Hadley’s Hope – the Weyland-Yutani colony established on LV-426, the same location as Ridley's original Alien and James Cameron's Aliens. The season could dive deeper into the conspiracy surrounding Weyland-Yutani's interests there, the Derelict spacecraft itself and much more. There's plenty to draw from within that timeframe from the creation of Hadley’s Hope to the moment Xenomorphs got loose and took over.

The series could easily narratively navigate itself to avoid run-ins with Newt's family, it being a massive colony with many story arcs and backstories available to choose from.

Alien: Earth season 1 will be coming to an end within 2 more weeks and FX have already secured a second season. It's unlikely season 2 will jump to events between the first and second Alien film, since much will be left to be explored from season 1 during its prequel time period. But, it sounds like a third or fourth season could very well explore a potential Hadley’s Hope or some other form of ALIENS tie-in. If so, I just hope they formulate the story in a coherent way that doesn't confuse things any further.

What do YOU think? Should the series explore locations and timeframes like Hadley’s Hope in a future season? Or should those periods remain omitted from prying eyes and preserve the mystery there? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Noah Hawley's Alien: Earth TV series arrives this summer on Disney+ / Hulu and FX Networks! The first 2 episodes began streaming August 12th, 2025 and the show will span 8 hour-long episodes! You can find a list of the episodes titles and their release dates here.

He can say that but he's still disregarded Prometheus and Covenant. No denying that really. There's an interview where he says the only movies that are canon to his series are Alien and to a major degree Aliens. At most those two matter to him

I know, it really annoys me that show creators or even new film directors can come in and just disregard the canon chronology that's been established. It's just laziness, in my opinion. Stories don't matter as much if they just change on a whim based on someone else's opinion. There's plenty of room creatively to build in the Alien sandbox without erasing valuable lore in the process. Just makes things messy for no reason.

There is a version of Aliens that starts with Newt's family, how her parents wanted to claim the ship they were told was safe, how the father brought the first one back with him on his face while Newt and Timmy waited in the vehicle, and the facility where they were  trying to remove the facehugger. Would love to see some consistency with these movies and the new tv show. Wendy/Marcy's face just making clicking sounds for what seemed like an eternity was boring and made me want to shut the TV off.

Again make a topic about your issues please. You bring these comments everywhere. This doesn't have a whole to do with the  story above. As for Aliens special edition it goes like this. Burke after hearing Ripley's story sent a message to Hadleys Hope to "go look at a grid reference". The Jordan family are indeed the ones that found the derelict. They waited to call it in until they investigated so they knew what to call it in as. Russ Jordan got facehugged and is likely patient zero for the Hadleys Hope hive. Burke attempted to absolve himself of responsibility what happened to the colony by saying what if the ship didn't exist and he didn't know if it did. The Jordan's made a mistake entering but it didn't matter because with the ship found the company would have investigated anyway.

Glad to hear the director confirmed this. Hope we will get the 2nd season next year and I agree there are still much more to explore before heading to 2122.

I think Noah Hawley intentionally avoid confirming his show linking to Prometheus & Covenant because Ridley Scott may already have plan for his third prequel, and also we may have Romulus 2 so it's good Hawley only focuses on the uncharted 57 years for now. Once a third prequel and Romulus 2 are released maybe we will see more characters appearing in all timelines.

I will forever argue there could have very easily been a way for Hawley to mold his story around Ridley's prequels and tie everything together. I could come up with several storylines myself and I probably will try my hand at a few in the future just for fun. The problem is everyone wants to have their "own" spin on things, they want all the credit which is why they change things and ignore source material. I dunno, I just always had this fear Disney's acquisition of the IP would lead to this kind of continuity confusion and it seems I was right.

ALIEN was doing fine more or less before Hawley cluster fucked the timeline by having Pulse Rifles and Smartguns appear before they were invented. I fucking hate Noah Hawley, he is just as worse as Paul W.S. Anderson

His show contradicts everything about ALIEN and ALIENS, what a fucking flip flopper!

Sorry for triple posting but I will reject any contributions Hawley makes to this series. Alien RPG is the only canon for me.

I don't know what happens to directors once thet make films or series under Disney. I mean, Noah Hawley did Fargo and Legion previously after all, then he does Alien Earth and you ask yourself wtf happened?

Then there's Rian Johnson who made Looper, a phenomenal sci-fi film. He directs the last Jedi for Disney which is a considerably worse film.

As a final example we have J.J Abrams who made Mission Impossible 3, Star Trek (remake) and Super 8. Hardly masterpieces but generally considered quite good. What happened? He made SW episode 7 and 9, with the former being a mediocre rehash of episode 4 while the latter is pure trash.

What said directors Disney works respectively have in common is horrible writing, which leads me to believe that Disney- through too much involvement perhaps, negatively affects otherwise good directors job and maybe even the writers.

I think the issue is lack of passion. If you take the job cause it's just another job, it won't be special. At least Ridley Scott and James Cameron attaches their egos to the projects they create. Some think they're pretentious but honestly, I think that level of confidence and perceived ownership leads to better productions.

I've met Ridley Scott in person and got to chat with him at the Covenant premiere back in 2017. He might night consider some details as deeply as us fans do but he's serious about the projects he makes and seems to not be influenced much. He was influenced to change direction with Covenant and that flopped compared to his truly passionate endeavor which was Prometheus.

The moment Noah Hawley said he's always seen the Xenomorph as more like a bug and wanted it to mimic a cockroach in the series I knew, this guy ain't passionate about Alien. He's just another guy doing another job.

@Chris that's interesting! I'd love to meet Ridley Scott and James Cameron, two of my favorite directors.

For sure, sincere passion to the work usually really shows. I've certainly always had the impression based on countless interviews that Ridley and James indeed come across as a bit egotistical, particularly James who loves to brag about what he's achieved in many interviews.

This is however not necessarily a bad thing (but rather a sign of confidence as you pointed out) and neither is the fact they're demanding. Actually, I'd argue that a grand vision and a demanding and perfectionistic approach coupled with education, knowledge and talent can make for a fantastic product.

On the contrary, I certainly felt like Rian and JJ Abrams didn't care about directing SW, not mention Noah Hawley's "take" on Alien.
