Neill Blomkamp admits he has moved on from Alien 5

Neill Blomkamp has seemingly moved on completely from Alien 5. After two more pieces of his own Alien 5 movie concept art were shared through his own personal Instagram account, talk of the shelved Alien film was re-ignited across our forums and social media. Many began to speculate if Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox meant that Alien 5 would be considered for production.

Responding to a fan question on Twitter, Blomkamp admitted that he has currently moved on from Alien 5 - and likely has been for more than a year after the project was put on the studio's backburner while focus was placed on Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant and any subsequent sequels to follow:

With Blomkamp no longer involved, Alien 5 remians in development hell, but with Disney now at the reigns of the Alien franchise, we may see the project resurrected down the road. After all, there is a rather large number of fans eager to see Alien 5 come to light and we all know Disney love to appease their nostalgia-driven audiences.

Neill Blomkamp's Alien 5 project was inevitably canceled following the merger between 20th Century Fox and Disney. Blomkamp had hoped to revive characters Hicks and Ripley for a new film, rewriting the Alien timeline, chalking up Alien 3 and Resurrection to mere bad dreams. Studio executives decided to can the project and instead took the franchise in a new direction, tapping Fede Alvarez to direct Alien: Romulus.

Neill Blomkamp's Alien 5 is indefinitely shelved.

Too bad.  Well I guess we'll wait to see what the mouse kingdom does, if anything.  I'm still a big fan of Blomkamp and his imagination.

Okay by me.  Alex Garland is an interesting choice though should the 'Alien' franchise continue to explore things after 'Aliens' (although I don't think it necessary).

Alex Garland should fight for a Dredd sequel instead of aliens, or something entirely new.
