August 11, 2011I agree that he did say cold because that is in the script. The coldest anything can theoretically get is -273C, absolute zero. Life can still exist close to this temperature because there are microorganisms that survive the harshness of space. And, of course, the alien itself can survive in space as at the end of Alien when it tries to climb back into the Narcissus' thruster.
In my opinion it would have been more interesting if Ash did say coal because that has implications about LV-426. It would suggest that millions of years ago the planetoid supported life and perhaps the introduced aliens hunted that life to extinction. The space jockey ship, after all, had been there a long time. Just a subtle word like "coal" could have helped to build up an intriguing mythology.
