MemberOvomorph07/26/2011My take.
The title (the story of Prometheus) is the story, the plot.........everything else will be the fantastic details.
I also heard Scott and Lindelof over the last few days refer to both movies, Alien AND Aliens and I find it interesting that in Aliens humans are terraforming LV-426.
I am sure that terraforming is the fire that this Prometheus has stolen.

MemberOvomorph09/20/2011Well it's all in the title Neurion.Stealing fire from the gods and all that.I don't think they called it Prometheus out of invention.I think creation (creatures and planets) will play a big part in the movie.
About your discussion with your friend -People will always need to something to believe in.Always have and always will.
Quote - "The (space) journey, metaphorically, is about a challenge to the gods," Scott said. But Scott's ambitions with Prometheus go far beyond simply restarting a hit franchise. The British director said the film's storyline, and script by David Lindelof, was partially inspired by the writings of legendary Swiss sci-fi writer Eric van Daniken.
Van Daniken, author of 1968 bestseller Chariot of the Gods, is best known as the first proponent of the so-called ancient astronaut theory, which holds that aliens kick-started civilization on earth. "NASA and the Vatican agree that is almost mathematically impossible that we can be where we are today without there being a little help along the way," Scott said. "That's what we're looking at (in the film), at some of Eric van Daniken's ideas of how did we humans come about." - Quote

Veteran MemberMemberOvomorph09/20/2011Hey Theusprom,
I really don’t have a problem with the filmmakers grafting van Daniken’s hypotheses/theories into the PROMETHEUS film. Van Daniken’s concepts do not necessarily preclude the possibility of the existence of a God(s). They simply hold that extra-terrestrials might have visited, assisted in, or “kick-started CIVILIZATION on earth…not CREATED human life on earth.
On van Daniken:
Several scientists, such as Carl Sagan and I. S. Shklovskii, have written about Däniken's paleocontact and extraterrestrial visitation claims. Although Sagan did not rule out the possibility of visitation, he insisted that "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence", which Däniken fails to provide.
Däniken claimed that a non-rusting iron pillar in India was evidence of extraterrestrial influence. Later, Däniken admitted in a Playboy interview that the pillar was rusty and man-made, and that as far as supporting his hypotheses goes "we can forget about this iron thing."
Some also question von Däniken's credibility, as he has also knowingly put forward fraudulent evidence to advance his hypotheses, such as photographs of pottery "depicting UFOs", supposedly from an archaeological dig dating back to the biblical era. The PBS television series Nova determined that this was a fraud, and even located the potter who made them. When confronted with this evidence, von Däniken argued that the deception was justified because some people would only believe his ideas if they saw actual proof.
As far as your statement: “People will always need to something to believe in. Always have and always will.”
This need to believe in something…where do you suppose it comes from? Was is it born spontaneously, out of the randomness of evolution or natural selection…or was it implanted or inherited by a sentient higher power?

MemberOvomorph09/20/2011Neurion,
That is a brilliant question and I am not sure I can give you an answer.
I think it was part of the evolutionary step to begin with, things we couldn't explain - like the Sun and Moon and stars.Praying for crops and a good hunt, that sort of thing. In modern times I think it might be something as not wanting the physical existence to be the end of everything.Perhaps people need to believe there is something after we die, after all it is depressing to think once we peg it that's it.
Yeah and I agree with the comments about Däniken's credibility, he can sound like a loon when he wants to, but I do think they are going to try and weave this sort of plot element into Prometheus.

MemberOvomorph09/20/2011I agree with you that it is the name of the ship, I just didn't go as far as to connect THAT with what the actual meaning or it's representation in Greek mythology.
So, they got these Atmospheric Compressors that make the air breathable, we see them via Bishop in ALIENS...
& It would seem that this art of "TERRA-FORMING" is KEY to the entire plot.
Great stuff, and each day that goes by I get more and more excited to see what is sure to be the MASTERPIECE of our times as far as Science Fiction Film goes.

MemberOvomorph09/20/2011eheh im italian , ive watched alien no less than 100 times and for me is the "perfect" movie .
YEs i agree ...we will ruin our surprise ...but we cant do nothing else ...
What i fear is the "good" movie ... i fear that everything compared to alien will look pale ... it cant be a good movie , it must be an excellent one ... Is Ridley capable to build another classic ?...i fear not but what we have saw until today is good .
Ridley will do a great directing ( even flops like 1492 and The Crusades have great cinematography ...and to be honest i like both ) and the cast is AWESOME ( add Sam Rockwell and we have the best cast possible ) , what i fear is the script . I fear it alot .
Also i think we have received alot of smoke in the eyes ...
--Theron and her naked push ups ...smoke ..she will have a minor role ( i hope )
--i think noomi rapace will not be the new ripley .... i think the movie will be on the shoulders of Guy Pearce , Idris Elba and Ben Foster ( i hope so )
and finally ....i cant wait 6 months ...

MemberOvomorph09/21/2011Thoughts....two ways to think about this. If the signal was heretofore masked by local interferance due to it's limited range the Nostromo might have been the first vessel to detect it. The ship itself was probably programmed to notify the Company in the event of just such an occurance. The company potentially had time to begin deciphering the message before relaying orders back to Nostromo. This packet may have also contained
EMERGENCY COMMAND OVERRIDE 100375
NOSTROMO REROUTED TO NEW CO-ORDINATES.
INVESTIGATE LIFE-FORM. GATHER SPECIMEN.
PRIORITY ONE
INSURE RETURN OF ORGANISM FOR ANALYSIS.
ALL OTHER PRIORITIES RESCINDED
CREW EXPENDABLE.
Scenario 2
If the signal were detected by a orbiting radio array, or a ground based installation some time prior to the ill fated last leg of the Nostromo. The nature of the transmission would definitely have been decoded. Though this is less likely as anyone with the proper listening equipment would have been able to detect the transmission, it would have been a race to get there first. That's just my take on things.

MemberOvomorph09/21/2011The big problem i see is that 1) if someone of the crew survive THEN WeYu should know everything about the alien races and THEN the Nostromo mission was already planned but since everything look fossilized we have to assume that 2) all the crew die ... however a movie with a bad ending always flop ( there must be always a sort of compensation and sacrifice for a just cause is not often enough )
3) the android survive and decide to keep it for himself ( a bit kiddish imo )

MemberOvomorph09/22/2011Once again Lindelof is asked how Prometheus is connected to Alien (a question I'm sure he's been asked a few too many times by now), but in this clip he also reveals:
"If there were a sequel to Prometheus, it would not be Alien. It would be it's own movie entirely because it goes off in an entirely different direction"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGBStEtUK6I&feature=player_embedded

Frantz
MemberOvomorph09/22/2011then why they used the Weyland Yutani company ? EVERYTHING we know surely point to Alien and more you link the movie to the Alien universe ( androids , WY , space jockeys , cilinders/eggs ) the less you can escape "in an entirely different direction "

Frantz
MemberOvomorph09/25/2011watched again alien tonight ...
two thoughts
1) the space jockey platform is slightly different ...but still very similar , so much that i start to think that is the same ship . What if the ship is shoot down on the lv426 by the prometheus crew ?
2) in the italian traslation the message "sounds like a menace" and that was interesting ..but in the original it sound like a "warning" .. that make alot of a difference , why they should warn if they want to destroy ?
of course the 2 stories could not be linked directly ...

Theusprom
MemberOvomorph09/26/2011Yeah it is a different platform if you look closely, but very similar.
There has been speculation that it is the top of the "Head" and is
where the SJ is in hyper sleep (all speculation I may add)
I don't think it is a ship, I think it is the interior to a chamber or something like that.
Remember the early pics that showed the entrance and tunnels?

They initially think the sound is a distress call, but mother works out (too late) that it is a warning.BTW, have you heard the warning call on the DC Blu ray?Totally different and no where near as efective!!!!

Frantz
MemberOvomorph09/26/2011nope ...the cds ive are from the Alien Collection ( with a very interesting alien legacy CD ) and there is the classic ( and scaring ) warning call
BTW for the 100+ time ive watched alien and for the 100+ time it catched my attention from the 1st frame ...is incredible how it catch you ... i really hope Scott can do again that magic ...and that lead me to some speculations
1) he did add Pearce and Foster because he wasnt able to recreate the right crew chemistry , so he did add 2 people with a strong personality .
2) the crew of the nostromo were made by "not very beautiful people " and not also very young ...ive the slight fear that the prometheus crew is a bit too young and good looking ( expecially in the main characters )

Theusprom
MemberOvomorph09/26/2011Yeah Frantz, I know what you mean.
Every time I watch it it draws me in.
The drama, mystery and ultimately the terror.

MemberOvomorph09/27/2011I trust that Ridley Scott is going to respect us fanatics of the original 'Alien'. He's creating another masterpiece, but he's got a lot of pressure because he's going backwards instead of forwards....he knows that there is an enormous fan base that regards Alien as waaaaay more than just entertainment. To design a prequel is probably the hardest thing he's ever going to do. Its going to be based off a movie that is already timeless...if he doesn't want to fuck with his fans he's going to have to "go back" to the way 'Alien' was constructed as a cinematographic masterpiece: the sets, the acting, the tension, the originality, the sound, the SUBTLETIES!!!
I pray every single night that Ridley Scott does Prometheus justice....because we ALL know what happened with the Star Wars prequels!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MemberOvomorph09/27/2011According to the few appearances of the Space Jockeys in the comics (they look kinda like Elephant-humanoids with their skin on), they weren't portrayed as the "creators" of the Aliens... they were like exterminators. I think they were supposed to be the original nemesis of the alien species until Dark Horse said "there was an alien skull in predator 2... lets throw them together in a book and see how it goes".
