MemberTrilobite01/2/2012I am currently watching Alien and have just come to the bit where Lambert plays the signal they pick up from the derelict...
Firstly upon hearing it I don't think that this is Shaw's message from Prometheus, they don't sound in anyway similar, but that is not why I've posted...
During the transmission, near the end of the signal, there is an out of place noise. This noise to me sounds like the whipping noise a Facehugger makes when attacking a host, therefore I believe that the Jockey sent out this signal moments before and as he was being attacked by the Facehugger.

MemberOvomorph01/2/2012It is also very likely a lot of these questions you raise franz will not be answered. One of the most amazing things about Alien, and there were a lot, is the amount of unanswered questions left at the end. If I were Scott I would keep the sequence going.

MemberOvomorph01/2/2012awesome idea !!!
damn my video cap card is broken and I have to get a new one but I think there still might be way for me to do it and I will race you guys to it but you'll "prolly" beat me !
Or I can just keep hanging out here beating myself...er...that doesn't sound right does it?

MemberOvomorph01/2/2012wow on my way to do this I found this beauty...remember this from the Quadrilogy DVD deleted scenes...

MemberOvomorph01/2/2012I just ran a quick and dirty recording but am limited on how fast I can play it. Anyway, running it as fast as possible (with my software), it still seems like just an eerie sound, maybe some sort of gunshot or fighting going on, but that is as much as I can tell.
Maybe somebody with some good software can take a jab at this? Even possibly slow it down too? Just to see what it sounds like?

MemberXenomorph01/2/2012Hey guys time for me to chime in. The transmission sounds like a mouth full of something while talking underwater. Ok, now to think about what we are disscussing more strategically. We need to work with the assumptionss that Ash already knows what the transmission says(atleast the jist of it). This is due mostly from the company changing out Science Officers prior to launching the Nostromo. The company knows damn well what they are in for. Think about it, this is where Prometheus comes in. I think the signal is an automated acoustical distress beacon that any ship that is about to crash or has crashed would give off by the ships computer system. It could be a pre-recorded message from the "engineer" that gets trashed at the end from the wreck or it could be getting face hugged. We don't know, but I like the ideas being kicked around.

MemberXenomorph01/2/2012Actually you know what. I just watched the 4th kind the other night. If anyone has a copy of that play the part where the Aliens are talking Sumerian on the recordign and then compare what you hear to the 12 second recording

MemberXenomorph01/2/2012Hey Sparky,
I'm not saying they are the same. They are uncannily similar sounding. The Tonality and abruptness of the languages are very similar. Check it out.

Rick

MemberOvomorph01/2/2012Rick, and everyone else,
Here are the comparison Videos for you, I did not alter them in any way.
They are quite different I think in Tone, But Not in articulation, in that, they are similar.
In the end I guess it's all open to personal interpretation, but "Mostly", and as Newt would say, I realized in this that there really is not a good example depicted in any of the films of the audio portion of the derelict's transmission. In the theatrical and in the 2003 Special ed. release we see Ripley studying it, but we never actually hear it, or one full cycle of it anyways. In the deleted scenes we hear what's in the the posted link below from Lambert.

MemberXenomorph01/2/2012Hey Sparky,
Need to listen to the recording from the handheld. Its not in any of the youtube footage. If you want to go youtube route listen to the Scott Hypnosis recording. I believe the engineer leaving the message from the derelict is male and the tones are very similar.

Rick

MemberOvomorph01/2/2012Hey Snorkel
I really liked your detailed theory. Really made me think. I understand the concept, but if the Engineers were really so smart, why would they choose a method that was so dangerous. Seems to me the very core programming of the Xeno is to utterly destroy all competing lifeforms. A lot could go wrong with something so dangerous.
I've always personally believed that the Xenos were developed as a malevolent weapon. That's usually a scenario where the danger is considered "acceptable" due to the reason it was developed in the first place.
I thought it might be something like the replicants in Blade Runner, they only have so long to live once they mature.
So the concept would be they deliver weapon to world they want to wipe out for whatever reason, Xenos do their thing, die off when no more hosts are left living, and then the Engineers have a vacant world to do as they please. I figured the "DNA absorption" of the host was simply a design to make it a more efficient killer of whatever species it found.
Obviously I was very ticked off when they showed in AVP that a queen had been living under Antartica for hundreds of years 8)

MemberOvomorph01/2/2012If the ship was carryng weapons ( xenomorphs ) who was the enemy ?
i dont think they were using the xenos to destroy life on a planet ..would be pretty silly to see the xenos tryng to catch a butterfly or looking for worms in the ground .
"hey we have a couple of xenos hunting for trouts there ..."
if that was a bomber ( old ridley scott idea ) ..there must be an enemy ...and the only enemy i can think is "us"

MemberOvomorph01/2/2012Good point Ghost.
I think the signal could be human but transmitted on alien technology. David looks like he learned how to control the star charts on an alien ship in the trailer. Doesn't seem like it would be a stretch than to send a message over the radio. The signal is an acoustic beacon, it's a code just like binary and it may be automatically encrypted for security. It is going to sound very strange whether it was was a human voice or an alien one. Try taking the binary information stored in your mp3 which are a series of 1s (ons} and 0s (offs) slow it down, convert the voltage and play it over analog equipment. You will get a very weird bunch of acoustic square wave patterns.

MemberXenomorph01/2/2012GS,
There are a couple of scenario's for this. The SJ's could be using a frequency that we don't use nor monitor in regular space. It could be a sub-space message that only the nostromo was directed to monitor to find the signal. This is Sci-Fi we could use anything regarding signal manipulation. Almost every star emits waves of some sort on every frequency. Which ones do we or should we monitor for transmission? The only one I can think of is 1.00794Ghz which is the atomic weight of hydrogen. This is the only signal that would catch our eye in any signal.
Just an opinion.

Rick

MemberOvomorph01/2/2012As a note of curiousity, why wasn't the engineers distress call ever answered? If this bioweapons cargo was important to their species, why was it left there. If we intercepted the signal than surely the engineer's species could have gotten the transmission as well. Oddly you aren't going to see the homeworld of the engineer, so the reveal is only going to be a couple of pages of what was potentially an entirely new experience. Building on this premise how can they make a sequel, the more that humanity learns about this derelict and it's crew/pilots the harder it is to keep it a secret. The signal itself could be picked up by any company, priviteer, exploration vessel, probe. The less we actually knew about the signal, its meaning, origins, intended recipients the more plausible it was. The mystery was tantalizing, sadly an easy explanaton is only going to crumble an elegant yet ghastly house of cards audiences and fans have built in the last three decades.

MemberOvomorph01/2/2012Good Point Ghost!
@Frantz
I meant intelligent life, civilizations, etc. Anything that would hinder whatever plans they might have for said planet. Butterflies and worms in the ground wouldn't do that.

edit; Aside form the initial shock I thought that recording was worse.
Just My Opinion though.

MemberOvomorph01/3/2012First post here, but I had to chime in. Mostly everything that has been posted here is THEORY. Ideally, we should only go off of the movies that the original writers/Scott had a hand in. I do not have any of the special editions/quadrilogy/etc. The first movie was just a movie called Alien. When it was written/produced, were there any plans to continue the series or go into the backstory of why the Derelict/Space Jockey/Xenomorphs were there? From what I remember of the first film (currently watching it as well), the Nostromo crew was awakened because MOTHER picked up a beacon, and the Nostromo was sent to investigate. In the production, the beacon was just gibberish created by a synthesizer. I highly doubt that there is a hidden message that we, the fans, can decipher. If it were a message from the Space Jockey, would it really be in English? Anything that happened in Aliens (and the further movies) has been retconned into the story.
