I just wonder about the dialogue they will use. Will the crew and the big blue guy sit down and have conversations in the film asking questions to each other about their origins? I wonder if Ridley will have them doing that.

I suppose it's a possibility that they would speak a language that we could understand...
I know the die hards out there would hate it if they spoke English and so would I. However, if for some reason the Sj's taught their language to ancient people, than I suppose an archeologist/linguist (ie Daniel Jackson type character..maybe Vickors) might be familiar with whatever language they might speak.
Presently, our understanding of how ancient civilizations built some of the massive structures that they did, is still only theory without solid evidence. They have not found evidence of how Stonehenge was built or the pyramids for that matter and many believe they had help( I do not presently subscribe to the ancient alien stuff). If Ridley plays into some of the "aliens" helped build humanity and gave us basics to start with(language, math, etc), I'm cool with it.
ALL generalizations are WRONG!

I'm sorry but who is that Blue guy? Where did you see him?

For quite a long time, I've had this question buzzing in the back of my mind and wasn't ready to pose it my self as the idea intrigues me. I wasn't sure where to go with it. Eventually I settled on something that unsettled even me.....I would suspect and hope that the big blue guy and his cohorts....don't say a single word ever.....imagine the magnitude of what the crew of the Prometheus is about to confront before our very eyes - the threat they meet in the person of these beings, who do the horrible, perverse things they do without ever speaking to their victims. How terrifying would that be? I imagine the horror of that encounter in the absence of a means to communicate - the cold, visceral reality of alien indifference lacking any means to attempt an understanding that itself would be unlikely were it possible.
You're about to die....the thing making it happen never speaks, even in its own language and you know...you know it wouldn't matter even if it did.
The idea's truly terrifying.

@craigamore
I thought the exact same thing the second I posted my comment above - silence is scarier than any language.

EnderMarch 15, 2012
@ncc1701 you're not quite correct there, everyone in star trek just sounds like they're speaking English through the universal translator!
***Spoiler***
The script that's causing so much commotion said the blue guy was telepathic, makes sense really when you think about it. Getting the blue guy to sound alien and evil and god-like would be an art form in itself, if he was speaking english.
Failing telepathy, he'll have either a German or English accent - everyone knows the evil dudes in movies are always English or German.

Well said Craig. That's pretty much how I imagined it as well. We're enemies, they have nothing to say. That's a big part of the horror in most alien themed movies. It may be cool if one communicated though just to satisfy my own need to learn more about them and what they're doing and why, but if they did it could humanize them and I like the idea of them being completely alien and terrifying to us.

callashbishopMarch 15, 2012
In ALIEN(1979) The Nostromo crew listen to some kind of "language" from the derelict signal

thank you very much craigamore !!!

craigamoreMarch 15, 2012
Exactly...they're aliens...stay alien to us. This is supposed to horror. Horrify me then.

CypherMarch 15, 2012
I hope you're somewhat correct on that craigamore ;-)

If they read the hieros that would be perfect, I could learn about them and they wouldn't have to come up and have a conversation. I just don't want them to talk because I want them to be scary bad*ss monsters who are just plain out to get us.

KorpenMarch 15, 2012
craigamore@
i agree.
And would we even be able to understand it?
After all, its an alien(possibly) we're dealing with. An alien, with alien motives and alien feelings and so on.
ALIENS THINK HUMANS ARE ALIENS

@Biomechanic
The symbols on the sarcophagi and walls are definitely communication, imo, and I like the idea of multidimensional communication, but when it comes to spoken (or unspoken) language, how will they express the symbols - through sounds, sign language or will they write to each other - how do you imagine their spoken communication?

IrishAndroid1March 15, 2012
I think it would be frightening as all hell if they did not speak a word. Oh the horror.
esotericMarch 15, 2012
Since they're humanoid they could talk, but in my opinion, if they do they'll have to find other ways to concrete the idea that while they are human-like they are NOT human. I'd like them to be as alien as possible, even if they look like us.

craigamoreMarch 15, 2012
Biomechanic.....The heiroglyphs are, I believe, a language...that would follow and the crew would, of course try to understand....it just feels like it would be the most terrifying ride possible if, in spite of they're attempts to understand or comprehend, they're met with total indifferent silence....even as the life with which they make first contact behaves with profound purpose and maliscous intent, they are met with nothingness....no means with which they can come to terms with the reality of their situation...it's like asking a holocaust victim to explain the why of his or her experience....those poor people, in coming face to face with the Nazi mentality of hate, could no more explain what happened to them than an ant could understand us.
That's the kind of horror it would be.
(Please understand about the holocaust reference, I'm not making light of that horrible part of our history and mean no disrespect..it's an illustration. So please...keep the pitchforks hidden away.)

Close Encouters of the Third Kind: Light and Sound.
Contact: Leverage listener's memories.
Sphere: Leverage computer memory and display.
There must be many other original ideas from past science fiction.
But I would like to see use of Cuneiform (proto-writing) from Sumeria - afterall, the Space Jocks created civilisation, right.
Alternatively, I like the notion of conveying semantics and pragmatics by using ideas and symbolism projected into the listener's mind's eye - depicted in front of the them (for cinematic effect).

bigbirdjimmyMarch 15, 2012
@Biomechanic, I know, they would be way more advanced in communication than we are. Between themselves, they would have a type of communication like being linked together. For the propose of the movie, I hope they don't say a thing. A cold, blank stair says a lot! Very chilling.
Also, I am having a hell of a time making cense of your message. I am not all that computer savvy, but I believe it is binary code/computer code.

Shaw could probably recognize and begin to understand the ancient mystical script, and that it has connections to ancient Hebrew symbols like Biomechanic said earlier. As well as Cuneiform and elements of ancient Egyptian Demotic + some of the runes and symbol magick that seems to have been passed around secretly to priest classes, brought back by Aleister Crowley when he supposedly channeled an Atlantean being (I think he just studied the runes from many cultures and made that shit up).
It seems like a mixture of very ancient symbols and hieroglyphs. I don't fully expect Shaw to understand it, but I think she'll figure some things out. As for speaking it, I dunno how that would work out. But, since Shaw's an archaeologist/anthropologist she should be very used to studying other cultures, and human groups-- even having to learn new languages to learn about them.
She should be able to find ways to communicate through actions, the hieroglyphs, knowing how to display and interpret the right gestures driven by primate psychology (like you would a primate), and how to interpret responses from anthropoids so they can start to build a common pidgin language.
They seem to have a lot of things in common with us, so it should be a piece of cake for Shaw if she has the right knowledge.
Because she's an archaeologist Shaw might be more geared towards physical/biological anthropology, and would probably question why these beings are so similar to us and appear like some kind of Hominoid or Hominid. She might also question how these being differ from us and the other known Hominids/Hominoids.
